Polling certain Oscar years would be a lot of fun. I'd add: 1958, 1989, 1994.

Mostly just curious to see if Shawshank sneak attacks Pulp.

PF in a walk and I'm not that enamoured of PF nowadays. Maybe Quiz Show would be worth being contrary over.

Quiz Show does bring the roffles!

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 10 May 2009 00:33 (fifteen years ago) link

no book this time?

I don't ever intend to see Gump. PF over Quiz Show easily.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 10 May 2009 00:36 (fifteen years ago) link

pulp fiction by default

velko, Sunday, 10 May 2009 01:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah this isn't much a contest. Even if you don't like PF that much, it seems like a work of fucking genius compared to the rest of these (esp. Forrest Gump, one of my least favorite films ever.)

Alex in SF, Sunday, 10 May 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Quiz Show is the kind of intelligent middlebrow film that the Academy thinks it nominates every year; it's really the best of its kind.

I still voted for PF.

I'm on exactly the same page as you Alfred. Though I'm obviously going to vote Pulp, Quiz Show is way better than any movie of its type ought to be.

neu hollywood (Eric H.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 07:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I was really moved by Forrest Gump when I was 14, almost to tears. For a while I made a point not to watch it a second time until a couple years later--waiting maybe 4 or 5 years--so I could enjoy again when I'd forgotten some of the details.

It's been 15 years. I never saw it a second time. I don't think adult me would like that movie very much

PF easily but I do happen to love Forrest Gump. And I never got the love for Shawshank...it was good but it's been ridiculously overhyped.

I voted for PF, but if it and Quiz Show were on TV tonight I'd probably watch the latter.

never seen that Weddings one. Others are all pretty good. Recently saw Quiz Show and thought it was a fine fine thing. (that Murrow guy!) (also Turturro, as always) so i'll vote for that this time.

Ludo, Sunday, 10 May 2009 18:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Quiz Show in a fucking walk and a half. There's literally not one bad SECOND in that movie.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 10 May 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Perhaps I will be the only person to vote for Four Weddings and a Funeral. I'm a sucker for that stuff.

Of the others, I loved Shawshank Redemption when it came out, but haven't seen it since. I think Pulp Fiction hasn't aged particularly well (though I watched it like twenty times in high school/college). Forrest Gump is vile. Havne't seen Quiz Show.

Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:17 (fifteen years ago) link

So why is 1994 a fun Oscar year? Because it's the year indie (or "indie") film became a contender?

Never saw Weddings. Gump is an abomination; not even Leonard Maltin Inc. liked it. But the damn near Sirk-worthy Cast Away makes me up it. Sorta. The rest is typically cautious Oscar bait. Even Pulp Fiction, which I'd vote for had this list not made me so sleepy, has a stodgy, good-for-you feel to it now. I bet in 40 years it rivals Potemkin in the "aw, do we HAVE to watch this?" film school sweepstakes.

I'd say 20.

Starting from 1994.

I voted for that too. That's the one out of these movies that I've enjoyed the most, even though it might be "artistically" less acclaimed. I can't imagine voluntarily watching any of those others more than 5 times, like I've done with 4 Weddings and a Funeral.

pulp fiction > quiz show > shawshank > forrest gump > 4 weddings etc

quiz show and shawshank are pretty close, both are not "great cinema" but are pretty entertaining, i'd be happy to waste a couple of hours on either one.

When I was 12 I had a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. shirt (size XL) that I got at one of those Korean '4 T-shirts for $10' stores, and damn I thought it was cool.

TNT reruns of Shawshank is probably where the majority of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman's present day income comes from. It's on at least 4 times a month, if not more.

Pulp Fiction is a chore to get through for me.

I love Forrest Gump for what it is, which is southern storytelling transformed for the big screen.

I've only seen Quiz Show once, right after it came out on VHS. Don't remember a lot.

I've never seen Four Weddings.

Between Gump and Shawshank, I think Shawshank just edges it.

Super Cub, Saturday, 23 May 2009 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

absolutely love Quiz Show - probably the movie i've watched more than any other. the writing is incredible on that film.

Dick Goodwin: Hey, you don't have to be a genius to connect the dots.
Charles Van Doren: Well, don't connect them through me.
Dick Goodwin: Hey, don't treat me like some member of your goddamn fan club. Are you telling me everybody got the answers but you?
Charles Van Doren: You're so persistent, Dick. You know, I really envy that.
Dick Goodwin: Was it just the money, Charlie?
Charles Van Doren: You'll forgive me, but anyone who thinks money is ever "just money" couldn't have much of it.
Dick Goodwin: Charlie, you wanna insult me, fine, but you can't envy me at the same time.

Paul Scofield gives my favorite performance in any of the nominated films (the Reuben sandwich exchange with Rob Morrow is A+).

something like that.

Sandra Goodwin:- they gave stempel the answers, why would van doren be any different?
Dick Goodwin:- sandra, you have no idea what these people are like. it's all thurber and trilling and bunny wilson.
Sandra Goodwin:- bunny?
Dick Goodwin:- yeah, edmund wilson, they call him "bunny"
Sandra Goodwin:- well that doesn't mean you have to.

Only seen Quiz Show once on TV years ago, thought it was wicked. Don't know about better than PF though - saw it in the cinema aged 16 and thought it was the second coming, and it held up pretty well last time I saw it maybe two years ago. I might get on the old torrents and watch QS again soon.

"lacking formal interest"? re Redford, wouldn't you say that about Ordinary People vs Raging Bull?

QS is good, but Turturro overacts a bit, and it really isn't about anything important (America, the eternal high-school virgin, loses her innocence for the millionth time; gimme a break).

I'm just glad Shawshank got blessed few votes. Constantly at high school and with my some of my friends who are not particularly interested in cinema this comes up again and again as "omg greatest film ever".

Which is why it's a witty chamber drama, with these American palladins feelnig as if "commercialism" challenging their dramas. It's the only film of Redford's career that presents a challenge to his WASP characters.
