Americans: do you live in a major city or not

i don't think there is a single (American) director named on this thread who you need to go to a film festival to see, at least if you live in a major American city like most Ilxors.

I'd like to preemptively suggest that the definition of "major American city" be left up to each poster. If you think you live in a "major American city," then you do. No need for Gabbneb to whip out MSA figures.

Using the "everyone's heard of it" standard, we must obv include Kalamazoo, Walla Walla, and Intercourse PA.

i think you start approaching/crossing the major/minor line at the Portland-Denver-Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Vegas-etc. level

I seriously doubt that EVERYONE has heard of Walla Walla.

Boise is more populous than St. Paul, gabbneb. Are we going by other criteria?

iatee, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:03 (fourteen years ago) link

since the purpose of this thread is determine whether or not american ilxors think they live in a major city, doing this routine again where gabbneb re-asserts the hegemony of certain US urban areas and other ppl get butthurt about it is pretty boring imo

if you actually wanted to determine whether or not us ilxors REALLY LIVED in major cities or not, you'd ask specifically where they lived and then go measure it against whatever standard you've already ginned up which i guess in this case is whether or not you need a film festival to see the work of an obscure director in a public place

is it major? i say yes.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

the criteria should be if yr city shows films by said (American) directors whoever they are

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

or we should just let gabz decide

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, in terms of national profile, Minneapolis and St. Paul are forever linked, much like Dallas/Fort Worth and Kansas City/Kansas City. It's really only when you live there that you get a sense of them as different entities.

xp: YES TO AKRON, it should win

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

But your original post said in a major American city - shouldn't you have specified MSAs at that point if that's what you meant?

sussing out the Slick Hustler (I DIED), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

that automatically qualifies cleveland as well, of course
(though we could argue that akron is more major)

blair underwood: "man up" (omar little), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know what an MSA is but if you really want to address the q opened in the first post, you'd need to find out if there's any correlation between it (MSA) and 'theatrical access to the films of a like a hungarian dude, as measured in distance between the arthouse theater that's showing it and your house'

should we include suburbs btw, like if you're from schaumburg does that count as chicago by virtue of being in the metropolitan area?

We need to develop a complex equation including pizza quality and crust thickness, city name font size on the Rand McNally map of the U.S.A., number of Grammy Award-winning sound engineering winners, Gucci loafer sales figures, serial killings, number of annual Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight showings, "urban" music festival frequency and attendance, average restaurant tip rate, quality of Major League Soccer franchise, and annual ostrich egg consumption.

Well, in terms of national profile, the Upper East and Upper West Sides are forever linked, much like Harlem/Spanish Harlem and the Bronx/the South Bronx. It's really only when you live there that you get a sense of them as different entities.

OK I live in the 25th largest metro area in the US apparently, but I voted no b/c of the original topic of the poll - that is, it doesn't really have much of an independent film/arts scene. But I guess by my definition there's only like 4 major US cities.
