i like all three of these beers, but i drink red stripe the most out of any of them

max, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

some ppl i've heard comment on this think that blue moon is a "microbrew" wtf

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, how could you not choose rs:

recently Red Stripe began sponsoring the International Festival of Thumb Wrestling held annually in Mason City, Iowa. Red Stripe Vice President of Marketing Randolph Samuelson III was the first black man to win this festival, and it has held a special place in his heart since he broke the color barrier and won the championship in 1971.

max, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I'll have a Red Stripe -- it's a decent, drinkable lager. I used to like Blue Moon, but there are so many other better Belgian-style whites, I don't like the orange slice, and it's brewed by Coors.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

black label really should have been an option here

MOAR HUMOR THAN A HUMAN(E) (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Conan last night professed not to have heard of Blue Moon -- is that possible? Or was that for the benefit of the audience? Rachel Maddow helpfully described it as a "Hefeweizen, a sort of fake microbrew made by Coors."

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

blue moon is terrible and insulting to Belgium and its beer makers

pj, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

obama's choice is based on his reputed preference for shotgunning canned beers iirc

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Obama should've gone with Goose Island -- sure, most people haven't heard of it, but he could talk about how it's a hometown favorite, wants to support local beermakers instead of international conglomerates, etc. And it looks like it's recently been made available in D.C., too.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

My dad, as tough as that cop, adores Blue Moon now that my tough brother in law has introduced it to him.

I still drink his scotch if asked.

I once saw a bartender convince a woman who ordered Blue Moon to try Bell's Oberon instead.

I saw people drinking this beer served with an orange slice...
What kind of beer is this?
I feel like im being jipped "flaming moe" style b/c many years ago i invented this drink which was corona served with an orange slice...

i started drinking red stripe a lot this year cuz the closest bodega didnt have much in the way of options, but ill actually ride for it at this point especially compared w/ most other beers @ that price point--its actually got some weight and flavor to it which is more than i can say for bud/corona/stella/whatever else is $3-$4/bottle at the bar

max, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess bud is usually cheaper but whatever

Wasn't it The Firm that made Red Stripe cool in America? I remember all these articles in the mainstream glossies about the "exotic" beer Tom Cruise drinks.

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

dunno, personally I'd never heard of it prior to visiting Belize in '01 or so

Red Stripe has always been cool (runnings) in America, big reggae sunsplash aspect to this.

Me and some friends got let off faredodging on the train once because we were drinking Red Stripe and the ticket inspector was Jamaican. Also it's made by DG who do a good ginger beer as well. Although I haven't tasted either of the others I have a real affection for RS so have to vote for it, unfair or not.

red stripe. nothing spectacular imo but def the best of these three. would choose red stripe >>>>>>> bud light >>> blue moon.

red stripe also has prob one of the coolest bottles/labels in beer

Not drinking some kind of American micro is stupid imo. Think of the spin possibilities!

1. American-owned
2. Small business
3. Probably uses US-sourced ingredients
4. Shows diversity of American culture
5. Tastes better

yesterday on npr they actually corrected their reporting of obama's beer choice mid-story from bud to bud light and i briefly wondered if he's on a diet? but i guess he just acquired a taste for it during his days of mass beer consumption? i don't really have a problem with him drinking bud but bud light is weak.

Bud Light is fine after a few other drinks - it's like water!
Blue Moon is okay for about half a bottle/glass, then it's too heavy and sweet.
Red Stripe is a fine all around choice.

ian, Thursday, 30 July 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, it's not just beer, it's completely rhetorical beer, being used to convey loads and loads of tonal and cultural stuff.

if you wanna look at it as rhetorical beer with loads of stuff attached to it go right ahead, and it can be if you wanna overthink it?

or it's just two people in an unusual circumstance trying to understand one another

Mr. Que, Friday, 31 July 2009 18:48 (fourteen years ago) link

the one thing I haven't seen anyone talking about as far as the racism angle goes - is whoever called the cops on him in the first place.

Wow, really? That has been all over the place to the point where the woman who did call hired a lawyer to make a statement and held a press conference to clear her name, plus the transcript released from her call drastically undercuts Crowley's account.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Friday, 31 July 2009 18:49 (fourteen years ago) link

in years past they might have drank scotch but really, so what? sharing food & drink is a fundamental social ritual, i don't see why beer has so much cultural weight in your estimation

what we really need to know is what type of bottle opener was used on the beer

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Friday, 31 July 2009 18:58 (fourteen years ago) link

okay seriously leaving aside the other stuff, I find it funny that y'all don't think the talking-outside-over-beer thing is kind of rhetorical! especially given this whole thread being based on the media going over the rhetorical/semiotic value of the brands of beer they chose to drink! I mean, yeah, destroyer, I think it has a really different rhetorical angle than a formal meeting with glasses of water, in lots of ways that are great (mainly the fact that this is really not super-important), and in a couple small ones that rub me the wrong way. the whole thing is totally a gendered ritual! it's a whole "we are men and meet casually as equals over a cold one and talk out our differences in an atmosphere of egalitarian masculinity" thing, surely. I mean, this is the white house version of "hug it out, bitch," no?

nabisco, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

uh no, because "hug it out, bitch" doesn't actually involve resolving anything or making any attempt to understand the other person but instead is about burying your hurt in the name of being a righteous dude

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Friday, 31 July 2009 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

In honor of this historic meeting I had four (4) Red Stripes last night. And a Stella, in memory of Gordon Brown (RIP).

ice cr?m paint job (milo z), Friday, 31 July 2009 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

like if I had to rate it I'd say that the beers as a rhetorical gesture are like 85% great and only 15% annoying to me

nabisco, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

You seem to be entirely hung up on the "drinking a beer" part to the point where you are ignoring the more important "and talking about what happened" part.

I also don't think all rituals are rhetorical.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Friday, 31 July 2009 19:03 (fourteen years ago) link

the talking-outside-over-beer thing is kind of rhetorical! especially given this whole thread being based on the media going over the rhetorical/semiotic value of the brands of beer they chose to drink!

do you understand that even though what the media thinks about the kinds of beer they're drinking and the endless discussions and blog posts and people talking about it on cable news probably ad nauseum this week has nothing to do with the substance of the discussion around the table? in other words, you're totally getting thrown off by the beer here?

Mr. Que, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

In 1981, as the most junior member assistant engineer, he was conscripted to work on a Public Image Ltd recording session for a single, "Home is Where the Heart is". In a PiL fansite interview [2] Launay recalled:

“None of the other assistant engineers at the Townhouse wanted to work with PiL because of John's reputation for throwing up, walking all over the mixing console, and being verbally abusive.

The session started very slow because the engineer/producer they had chosen wasn't very familiar with the then very new, and experimental SSL mixing console. This meant I had to keep showing him which button did what. Back then an assistant engineer's place was to stay very quiet, at the back of the room, operating the analogue tape machines. John (Lydon) sat in a big arm chair with two crates of Red Stripe, the Jamaican Beer, one on each side, and watched with amusement at me going back and forth trying my best to help the engineer out. John wanted a triplet delay on a particular vocal line, and the engineer didn't seem to understand what he meant. I was really into Dub Reggae at the time, so I set it up and it worked well. Later the engineer got up and left the room to have a piss. John got up and locked the door behind him. When he came back he started thumping on the door shouting, "Let me in..." John told him to fuck off.

lord, Que, I'm not "thrown off" by the rhetorical gesture of "beers," I'm talking about the rhetorical gesture of "beers" and why it bothers me a bit -- discussion could happen in any number of settings, all of them rhetorically different, and this one was picked for a reason!

nabisco, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Mr. Que, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link

either way, you're overthinking it by like a million percent. yes, rituals and meetings have hidden agendas and rhetoric and stuff, but i think at the end of the day it sounds like you just don't like beer

If there is any rhetorical imagery I think people should take away from it, it's the idea that people who have issues with each other that stem from racial friction can actually sit down and talk to each other like rational adults and come out the other side still behaving like rational adults.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/07/30/harvard.arrest.beers/index.html

Earlier Thursday, Obama said the chat was prompted by an exchange he had with Crowley, who said in a phone call with Obama, "Maybe I'll have a beer in the White House someday."

The president replied that that could be arranged.

also lol Obama, you are awesome:

"This is not a university seminar. It is not a summit. It's an attempt to have some personal interaction when an issue has become so hyped and so symbolic that you lose sight of just the fact that these are people involved," he said.

He said he would be surprised if the media makes the meeting out to be more important than his meeting Thursday with Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, president of the Philippines, but "the press has surprised me before."
