Walmart says gunman is employee at Nevada store

(AP) – 4 hours ago

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A gunman was holed up Friday at a Walmart store where he worked after shooting three co-workers who were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Heavily armed police officers entered the building about four hours after the lone gunman entered about 8:30 a.m. and opened fire on fellow employees, Reno Deputy Police Chief Mike Whan said.

Police: Fla. gunman killed self at school meeting

(AP) – 3 hours ago

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a school board meeting Tuesday, sending spectators scrambling before he exchanged shots with a security guard and then killed himself, police said. No one besides the gunman was injured.

Witnesses said the gunman walked up to a podium, spray painted a red "V'' with a circle around it before he began firing.

Bay District School board member Ginger Littleton said she hit the gunman in the arm with her purse when some of the people in the room were ordered out.

"In my mind, that was the last attempt or opportunity to divert him," she told The Associated Press.

The gunman got angry, turned around, and she fell to the floor. The man pointed the gun at her head and said, "You stupid b----" but he didn't shoot her, she said. She's not sure why.

"He had every opportunity take me out," she said.

Initially, officials thought that district security chief Mike Jones may have killed the gunman. But police Sgt. Jeff Becker said that after authorities reviewed videotape of the shooting, investigators determined that the gunman, identified as Clay A. Duke, fatally shot himself after being hit by shots fired by Jones.

State records show Duke, 56, served four years in prison about a decade ago for aggravated stalking and other crimes.

Reporter Daniel Carson of the Panama City News Herald told his paper that he had noticed the man during the meeting and he didn't appear agitated.

Leon Walters, who was also in attendance, said the gunman was a heavy, disheveled man who walked along the side of the room to the podium.

Walters said the man pulled out a can of spray paint and drew a red circle on the wall with a mark through it. Carson and other witnesses described it as the letter "V." The man then pulled out what looked like a pistol.

"What are you doing?" someone asked, Walters recalled. "What's going on?"

The gunman told everyone to leave "except these clowns behind the counter here," referring to the school board members, Walters said. There are five board members, Littleton and four men.

Carson said the gunman told everyone to leave except the male board members.

Walters left the room but stayed behind one of the doors. He called 911 and was peeking inside.

The gunman was in a heated discussion with the school board members, Walters said.

"I overhead some discussion about his wife needing a job," Walters said. "Or his wife had lost her job or wanting a job or something like that."

Walters heard one member say, "I'll get your wife a job or I'll see if I can't find her a job somewhere."

That's when Jones, who had been elsewhere in the building, entered and exchanged shots with Duke, wounding him. Duke then shot himself, police said.

"The guy obviously had a death wish," district spokeswoman Karen Tucker said.

Carson told his paper that Jones was comforted by his colleagues and led away.

"He is a hero," said Tommye Lou Richardson, the school district's personnel director, who was at the meeting.

State prison records show Duke was charged in October 1999 with aggravated stalking, shooting or throwing a missile into a building or vehicle and obstructing justice. He was convicted and sentenced in January 2000 to five years in prison but was released in January 2004.

"He started making some demands of the superintendent," Stafford said, adding that the man then spay-painted a red circle with a "V" on a wall in the building. "We don't know if that symbol has any meaning," Stafford said.

A biography on Duke's Facebook page reads: "My Testament: Some people (the government sponsored media) will say I was evil, a monster (V)... no... I was just born poor in a country where the Wealthy manipulate, use, abuse, and economically enslave 95% of the population. Rich Republicans, Rich Democrats... same-same... rich... they take turns fleecing us... our few dollars... pyramiding the wealth for themselves. The 95%... the us, in US of A, are the neo slaves of the Global South. Our Masters, the Wealthy, do, as they like to us..."
Under "political views," Duke labels himself a "Freedom Fighter." Under religious views, he wrote, "Humanism."

This part made me cringe a little...

A chilling video of the meeting, from a live Internet feed provided by CNN affiliates WJHG and WMBB, shows Husfelt attempting to reason with Duke, who began a rambling discourse that had to do with the apparent firing of his wife and sales taxes. He and the superintendent discussed possibly finding a job for Duke's wife or looking into the case. Husfelt told him that he likely signed the termination papers, but couldn't recall the circumstances

The city had only one homicide last year and none during the previous three years, according to statistics compiled by the Police Department.

The quiet beachfront city of approximately 25,000 residents identifies itself as the Gateway to Southern California's Orange County and is located about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

It is home to Leisure World, a gated senior citizen community of 9,000 people, as well as the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station military complex. Two-thirds of the city's 13.23 square miles are occupied by the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge.

All visitors evacuated from Rainier; gunman sought
By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press – 8 minutes ago

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — Authorities evacuated about 125 people overnight from the visitors center at Mount Rainier National Park, where police have been searching the snowy terrain for an armed gunman suspected of killing a park ranger.

About 150 officers converged on the mountain park after ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death Sunday morning, and searchers used an aircraft with heat-sensing capabilities to hunt from the skies.
Authorities believe the gunman was still in the woods, with weapons.

Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said that Benjamin Colton Barnes, a 24-year-old believed to have survivalist skills, was a "strong person of interest" in the slaying.

"We do have a very hot and dangerous situation," Troyer said.

Teams were assessing new tactical plans that they planned to put into place at daylight, he said.
Safety concerns prompted authorities to keep the tourists quarantined at a visitors center as the manhunt unfolded. Early Monday morning, officers escorted them out of the park in groups of vehicles over several hours.

Crews had initially planned to keep everyone in a basement with guards. But it was determined to be "better to do it (evacuate) under the cover of darkness than daylight," Troyer said.

Evacuee Dinh Jackson, a mother from Olympia who came to the mountain to sled with family and friends, said officials ordered people to hurry into the lodge after the shooting.

Jackson said officials had everyone get on their knees and place hands behind their heads as they went through the building, looking at faces to make sure the gunman was not among them.
"That was scary for the kids," she said.

Michael Wall, an elementary school teacher from Puyallup, spent the morning hiking with his son. They didn't find out about the violence until returning.

Wall said he was impressed by how staff members and visitors kept each other comfortable with food and conversation.

"It was calm, cool, easygoing," Wall said. "I didn't notice any tenseness or terseness."

A parks spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran, and the mother of his child had alleged he suffered from post-traumatic stress following his deployments.

Barnes was involved in a custody dispute in Tacoma in July, during which the toddler's mother sought a temporary restraining order against him, according to court documents.

In an affidavit, the woman wrote that Barnes was suicidal and possibly suffered from PTSD after deploying to Iraq from 2007 to 2008. She said he gets easily irritated, angry and depressed and keeps an arsenal of weapons in his home.

Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party south of Seattle, police said.

Sgt. Cindi West, King County Sheriff's spokeswoman, said late Sunday that Barnes was connected to an early-morning shooting at a New Year's house party in Skyway, south of Seattle that left four people injured, two critically.

That shooting happened about 3 a.m. and stemmed from an argument over a gun.

West said three people fled the scene. Two were located, and West said authorities were trying to find Barnes and had been in contact with his family, trying to have them convince him to "come to the police and tell his side of the story" in the Skyway shooting.

At Mount Rainier around 10:20 a.m. Sunday, the gunman had sped past a checkpoint to make sure vehicles have tire chains, which are sometimes necessary in snowy conditions, Bacher said.

One ranger began following him while Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two young children who was married to another Mount Rainier park ranger, eventually blocked the road to stop the driver.

Before fleeing, the gunman fired shots at both Anderson and the ranger that trailed him, but only Anderson was hit, Bacher said. Anderson would have been armed, as she was one of the rangers tasked with law enforcement, Bacher said. Troyer said she was shot before she had even exited the vehicle.

About 150 officers, including officials from the Washington State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and FBI, were on the mountain Sunday.

Tactical responders wearing crampons and snowshoes pursued what appeared to be the gunman's tracks in the snow, Troyer said. Those tracks went into creeks and other waterways, making it more difficult for crews to follow.

"He's intentionally trying to get out of the snow," Troyer said.

Authorities recovered his vehicle, which had weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said.

A SWAT team was able to remove Anderson's body from the mountain late Sunday night, with a procession of law enforcement vehicles escorting her remains away.

The park would remain closed Monday, officials announced late Sunday.

Park superintendent Randy King said Anderson had served as a park ranger for about four years. King said Anderson's husband also was working as a ranger elsewhere in the park at the time of the shooting.
"It's just a huge tragedy — for the family, the park and the park service," he said.

A body was spotted by aircraft in a remote area and there's a strong probability it is Benjamin Colton Barnes, the man thought to have killed a Mount Rainier National Park ranger on Sunday, a sheriff's spokesman says.

"One of the air units and some of the FBI SWAT team members and sheriff’s SWAT team members have found a body," said Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer. "We have not gotten to it, we are nowhere near it, it’s still buried in the snow."
