NEW YORK (WPIX) - Mayhem erupted in Midtown as four people were shot in three separate incidents within the span of less than three hours along Seventh Avenue. Police say they made 54 arrests, but the gunmen in each shooting are still on the loose.

The first incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Sunday when a 21-year-old man was shot in the ankle at 41st Street and 7th Avenue in Times Square. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Just one hour later at 12:30 a.m. Monday, police say a 21-year-old woman was shot in the face with a BB gun at 51st Street and Seventh Avenue near Rockefeller Center. The victim was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in stable condition.

The third shooting happened at 2:30 a.m. in front of Penn Station at 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. A 19-year-old girl was shot in the elbow and an 18-year-old girl was shot in the leg. The two teenagers were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

Police say the three shootings appear to be unrelated.

Fifty-four people, including nine juveniles, were arrested on a combination misdemeanors and felonies, which include assault, weapons and misconduct charges.

The investigation continues as the shooters from each incident are still on the lam.

Police said the three wounded women were innocent bystanders caught amid surging groups of gangbangers, most of whom had been to the annual car show at the Javits Center.

Easter night, when it falls during the car show, has brought violent clashes to Midtown for the last half-dozen years, terrifying tourists and business owners.

The NYPD had beefed up patrols in preparation. "It's something we watch over and we prepare for it in advance," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

Until this year, the most serious clashes were in 2006 and 2007, when some businesses were told to close for their own safety and a handful of stabbings were reported.

I know my first thought in Easter Sunday is usually "let me go grab a gun and shoot a random woman in the elbow"

No clue. Moved house this weekend so we had no internet, limited TV, no time to watch it, and dead cell phones (b/c my charger was packed, among other things). Turned on the news this AM for 5 mins to find that 4 people were shot with BBs in Times Sq, there was an auto show, someone tried to blow up the US embassy in Pakistan, and California has barely not fallen off the edge of the country, again.

Could someone please stop the world from moving so dang FAST?

Oh yeah, and a plane in New Jersey left a piece of itself on the runway when it departed. Total madness.

I'm a little confused, how many of these shootings involved BB guns? From the initial story I read, I thought it was just ("just") the woman who got shot in the face?

I read it as the face-shooting was BB and all the others were actual grown-up bullets.

At 3:59 p.m. a loud rumble sounded and the lower facade of one of the buildings began moving. A moment later it slid slowly to the sidewalk in a mix of glass and loose bricks.

Heavy gray smoke filled the air, and a few moments later as it began to lift it could be seen that no part of the building was left standing.

Jordi Trachtenberg was smoking an electronic cigarette on St. Marks Place, trying to calm down after an explosion “rocked his apartment and made him jump” from his chair.

Mr. Trachtenberg, who lives at 30 St. Marks Place, which faces the back of buildings on Second Avenue, said he thought the explosion was in his building, where he has lived for eight years.

“I felt the ground shake underneath me, and then all this debris — plaster and glass — started pelting my windows,” he said.

“I ran from my building when I saw the flames go up and my apartment filled with smoke,” Mr. Trachtenberg said. “I couldn’t breathe, I started gagging.”

”My first thought really was it was my home,” he said, “because we haven’t had gas for six months, and Con Ed was doing work outside today.”

A dude I knew through someone else posted on facebook that he walked by, smelled gas and saw workers going back and forth frantically. As he got a little further down the street apparently that's when the explosion happened.
