oh really? were any of the properties built using timber milled from the property?

schlump, Friday, 7 January 2011 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

am actually interested in seeing, i couldn't find anything

schlump, Friday, 7 January 2011 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link

alameda i guess. i hate the wyoming & woodstock ones.

positive reflection is the key (harbl), Friday, 7 January 2011 13:32 (thirteen years ago) link

woodstock location is kinda awesome though. it reminds me of the ice storm, which is (or is at least purportedly) buffalo iirc.

schlump, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i think ice storm is connecticut, i.e. commuter distance to nyc. buffalo is a long way (from ice storm country and from woodstock)

caek, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Woodstock over Wyoming by the tiniest of margins. The views are about equal, but the interior in the Woodstock dwelling is nicer to me. The Calif one is a bit fussy looking, overall.

Pashmina, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe the Woodstock one is cheating a bit, with those beautiful autumn colours in the view pics.

Pashmina, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Love the Alameda Craftsman but I just don't want to live with that kind of furniture forever and I'd feel like a traitor going too off-message from the obvious age and style of the house. The kind of house that, when some dilettante couple looks at it on a real-estate show, I cross my fingers that they DON'T buy it, because they don't like the original light fixtures and they think the kitchen is too small and they want to put a wine refrigerator in the dining room built-ins. I love it. I just don't want to own it.

The Wyoming lodge just has too much of its own personality for me, tho I like the vista a great deal. Woodstock wins for being the most liveable, which isn't really saying much at that the price point.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 7 January 2011 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

woodstock no competition as far as the house, best place to live too

ice cr?m, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i would live in all of these houses but woodstock most of all

sonderangerbot, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

recreation native american paraphernalia not included.

thank goodness.. voted Cody but those totems would have to go. Don't really love any of the locations for a primary residence though.

Kerm, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Balcony railings ("loft view 1") on the Cody dwelling would have to go too I think.

Pashmina, Friday, 7 January 2011 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the Woodstock house but several people my parents know have that kind of country/homey/woodstove and basketwork and handicraft vibe going and none of their places would cost a third of that. Granted one of them is a woodworker himself and did everything in the house by hand, which you almost can't put a value on, but I'm just unconvinced by Update NY for the price.

Wat?? Alameda is a genuinely nice place. Plus it's in close proximity to San Fran and Oakland, which isn't as bad as the tourists make it out to be.

heh (kelpolaris), Friday, 7 January 2011 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont particularly know, automatic weapons are illegal - you can get a semi auto ak or whatevs no prob, as to whether you can fire it on yr property has a lot to do w/local ordinances, generally the less people you live near the more likely it is you are allowed to fuck w/guns, pointing weapons at church going folk is frowned upon tho

three great, great homes. but i think i'd have to factor in the community. not sure precisely where the NY home is located in the state, but i think the CA home's proximity to SF makes that the choice for me.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 13 January 2011 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

incidentally 775K for those homes is -- even in this market -- phenomenal.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 13 January 2011 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

love Alameda, but I'd try to brighten up the interior - it takes skill, but I've seen some really well-done homes mixing Crafstman and later modernism

The Cody house would be bitching just because it backs up to a mountain, which equals shooting range to me.

I wouldn't mind summers in Wyoming -- I drove through the state once on the first of August and froze my ass off when we stopped for gas.

earnest goes to camp, ironic goes to ilm (pixel farmer), Thursday, 13 January 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

don't care for the wyoming house. it's nice and i love the spaciousness, but there's a cartoon western rusticity that grates. plus i'm almost certain i wouldn't care to live in/near cody, WY, so the house itself is beside the point anyway.

both of the others are gorgeous. prefer the woodstock setting (8 acres of woods!), but i'm a west coaster, so alameda sounds great. alameda house does pose obstacles in terms of the dark, woody interior - milo z OTM there. beautiful, but not exactly to my taste . wouldn't want to fuck with it, but nor would i feel entirely trapped by the period and style in deciding how to actually live in it. love the kitchen. then again, love the bath in woodstock. hard to call...

Austin house does a good job of balancing Craftsman cottage style with modern. I'd still probably strip all the wood and go lighter, though. (WTF at that place going for almost a half-mil in Austin? Real estate prices jumped since the last time I knew anyone shopping down there, I guess.)
Chicago condo is nice, but the kitchen is out of place.
Florida house is Florida-y.

I think the Houston house itself is the best of the three. I don't really like the style of the stuff in it, but sweet solarium. The first one does creep me out a little. I hate vaulted ceiling bedrooms, and it looks more like a lodge than a home.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Sunday, 15 December 2013 02:39 (ten years ago) link

And the third one is just boring and ugly and I can't even believe it's over 1 million.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Sunday, 15 December 2013 02:39 (ten years ago) link

That first one has a nice exterior and great location and then goddamn the ugliest fucking interior ever. Those floors look terrible. Sure, wide planks if you want to look vintage but they weren't making floors out of 1x12s.

Houston is a malarial swamp and that interior looks like a modernist McMansion in California. The solarium is a nice idea, except that you could only use it for 3 months/year in Houston.
