Voting Pullman because I think Paxton's gonna walk this but really they're both winners as far I'm concerned.

Greil Marcus has written about Pullman like he's Marlon Brando or somebody, but I don't have any sense of him at all, beyond that he starred in an insane David Lynch film. I liked Paxton in A Simple Plan and Twister (I don't remember much about One False Move, and should look at that again).

I've liked Pullman in some stuff, but he was the worst SNL host I've ever seen. Paxton by a fucking mile.

I can't decide if Pullman should be docked for that "oh my fiancee is leaving me to meet a guy she's never spoken to on the empire state building well swell i'll pick up the tab" scene in sleepless in seattle or given points for somehow surviving it

i forget he was also in spaceballs and ruthless people, too. I think the SNL nightmare makes me forget he's been decent, but Paxton can fucking own the screen, and I can't say that about Pullman (sax solos aside)

also if Bill Pullman has ever been part of a new wave duo who credited judge reinhold for whistling on their album, someone should let us know

he was funny in ruthless people
he stood next to some funny people in spaceballs

he got through a bad speech in ID4
he got through a bad scene in Sleepless in Seattle
i also believe he's done some theater

this against the director of both Fish Heads and Frailty, who has been murdered by a terminator, alien and predator, and played the most bad-ass vampire in the most bad-ass vampire movie. plus he's played the lead in a bunch of solid b movies, supreme goofballs in weird science and the dark backward, "coconut pete" in a broken lizard movie, managed to hold his own against three wives for a handful of seasons on HBO, yeah c'mon people.

watched "dead alive," which might be the only movie with pullman and paxton, with some chilx pals on saturday. pullman is definitely the star, but paxton has some substantial scenes, and it's kind of archetypical roles for both - pullman is nerdy and nervous, paxton is brash and swarmy. great movie if you haven't seen it, also has a creepy bud cort in a big role.

Pullman is aloof, arch, it almost always comes across to me like "I can't really act" acting which is fine, of course, but it doesn't work for me in his case. Paxton does the opposite really, or tries to, and it works for me. But maybe that's just cos I find him hot.

Well, bummer news indeed about Paxton. What a sad way to pass as well, after complications from surgery. He made a mark for sure.

Oh no! I just listened to Dean Delray's* interview with him last week and was starting to work my way through his roles. Damn, what a bummer.

*It was amazing because it felt like Delray had finally found a guest who actually complimented his (often distracting) voice.
