I don't get the Levellers one. Explain?

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:44 (twelve years ago) link

someone named jeremy is a certain type of person as distinct from say someone named richey

conrad, Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:50 (twelve years ago) link

all of their fans are trustafarians

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:51 (twelve years ago) link

jeremy is a nicer name than richey imo

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

it's at least partly a class thing

zvookster, Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:54 (twelve years ago) link

the manics on the other hand, as an authentic punk voice, had a fan-base that definitely contained no middle-class people whatsoever

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Saturday, 17 September 2011 10:54 (twelve years ago) link

bloody trustafarians

is it possible flea started talking british after hanging out with thom yorke the last couple years?

i actually thought of the lou reed quote on frank zappa. i think that the quotes are from a compiled list and the lou reed quote didn't make the cut for whatever reason, though.

So a child named Jeremy can call his mother "mummy", whereas Richie has to call his mother "mum" or else she'll box him about the ears?

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:33 (twelve years ago) link

it's basically about middle class people being butthurt

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:35 (twelve years ago) link

on the reg

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:35 (twelve years ago) link

altho the "Jeremy" thing has a slightly less blanket application than that. see also: the Housemartins "Five Get Overexcited"

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

i thought maybe they played a Pearl Jam cover

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:39 (twelve years ago) link

Obviously name doesn't have the same resonances in the US

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

it's a cheap, lazy zing and not worth making but y'know it was at least half funny which puts it ahead of a lot of the list. and the point is that it's aimed at the Levellers who at the time was busy claiming Friedmanism and never having a bath as The Most Radical Gesture so

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

Zorro on doughnuts should walk this

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but consider the source, i think when the zing is made by somebody clearly less talented than the zingee it weakens the blow a little. it's a great line tho.

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:55 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah, i mean, i don't care much for either of them, but gallagher far less.

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

Say what you like about the Levellers, but at least they could swim.

Gallagher quotes need their own poll.

DLR has said so many clever and bizarre things over the years that "lol nerds" really just doesn't rate

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

it's a quality zing i think

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

not as witty as Dave Grohl's obv but still

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

it is, and he's not wrong -- i totally had a "i'm gonna check this guy's music out, he has GLASSES like me" kind of reaction to EC as a teenager

i'm just saying in a list of DLR quotes it wouldn't make the top 20

some dude, Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

it's got a focus that lifts it above 'lol ur kid died' or 'lol u ugly' tbf

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

one of my all-time favourites is henry rollins on morrissey - “get a girlfriend, get a James Brown CD, get some vitamin C, get some fucking clean air and some sunlight, go outside for a walk. get over it!”

i still don't know who rollins is but that is otm.

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

yes, all gay guys should just get girlfriends

iatee, Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

brilliant punchline.

lex's i mean.

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

i'd reword it to "get laid" but the idea is the same

xp

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

it's funny cause henry rollins is exactly as moody as morrissey really, and it's not like his music is particularly james brown-influenced

iatee, Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

genuine irl lol @ “I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

7 Crazy Chinese Mothers (will), Saturday, 17 September 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

In the early 1990s, I'm pretty sure that Morrissey was on record as being "asexual". Plus Rollins very publicly supports gay rights.

rustic italian flatbread, Saturday, 17 September 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

also rollins is gay

I can't remember where I read it, but one of my favourite quotes ever was Randy Newman on Rattle & Hum: "Black people love U2!"

Not to dwell on something said one hundred and fifty years ago but...this idea that British people are pale, miserable and sickly (i.e. "gay") and don't listen to James Brown was kind of tiresome at the time.

Chez Dahmier (Mount Cleaners), Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think Rollins was speaking about "British people"

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

he was singing about a gay bloke who wrote a lot of songs about being pale, miserable and sickly tho

Louis Jaha (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 17 September 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

I'd like to hear a Rollins song written from the point of view of Morrissey after taking some Vitamin C and getting some sun.
