it's at least partly a class thing

the manics on the other hand, as an authentic punk voice, had a fan-base that definitely contained no middle-class people whatsoever

i actually thought of the lou reed quote on frank zappa. i think that the quotes are from a compiled list and the lou reed quote didn't make the cut for whatever reason, though.

yeah but consider the source, i think when the zing is made by somebody clearly less talented than the zingee it weakens the blow a little. it's a great line tho.

Not to dwell on something said one hundred and fifty years ago but...this idea that British people are pale, miserable and sickly (i.e. "gay") and don't listen to James Brown was kind of tiresome at the time.
