hoos i dunno a better thread for this -- did you see this "Informant" documentary, and what did you think? I'm just watching now, and its sort of a wild creepy character study.

somehow i find the fantasies and self-justifications of delusional self-serving inveterate liars continually fascinating

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Thursday, 28 November 2013 04:04 (ten years ago) link

i haven't seen the movie, but i read the book by darby's cofounder at common ground in new orleans, have sparred with Darby a little on twitter, and know folks in austin who Knew Him When. i still don't feel like i'm inside his head at all--do you feel like you 'get him' having seen the flick?

creating an ilHOOSion usic sight and sound (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 28 November 2013 05:55 (ten years ago) link

lol I hadn't heard anything about this film, but read "delusional self-serving inveterate liars" and thought "this must be about ol' br@nd0n d@rby"

dan m, Thursday, 28 November 2013 14:31 (ten years ago) link

I dunno if I feel qualified to say i 'get him' since its a mess of unbelievable stories and other people telling other stories and even then its just one film so how can i trust it.

But it at least presents one 'theory' of the guy that makes sense, which is that he just wants to feel important and heroic and doesn't care about the 'truth' of that validation or where it comes from, so he'll say whatever makes him feel the most badass person in the room, and if people don't keep giving him that validation he'll turn on them viciously.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

that does line up p well with my sense of the guy

'don't carry a sign about the volcker rule,' they said
'no one will know what it means' they said

"They've cited [Occupy the SEC's] suggestions 284 times in the final rule, and in a lot of those contexts they agreed with us, and a lot of the time they disagreed with us. They're not going to say that Occupy said this and we're going to follow it, but we are pretty comforted that they followed at least some of our suggestions. [For comparison, the rule cites the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association 599 times, Americans for Financial Reform 179 times, and Senator Jeff Merkley 176 times. - ed. note]"

From the WSJ letters column:

Progressive Kristallnacht Coming?

Regarding your editorial "Censors on Campus" (Jan. 18): Writing from the epicenter of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its "one percent," namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the "rich."

From the Occupy movement to the demonization of the rich embedded in virtually every word of our local newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, I perceive a rising tide of hatred of the successful one percent. There is outraged public reaction to the Google buses carrying technology workers from the city to the peninsula high-tech companies which employ them. We have outrage over the rising real-estate prices which these "techno geeks" can pay. We have, for example, libelous and cruel attacks in the Chronicle on our number-one celebrity, the author Danielle Steel, alleging that she is a "snob" despite the millions she has spent on our city's homeless and mentally ill over the past decades.

This is a very dangerous drift in our American thinking. Kristallnacht was unthinkable in 1930; is its descendent "progressive" radicalism unthinkable now?

love the scare quotes on the American one-percent, namely the "rich." if by "rich" you mean "have collective wealth equal to that of the 4 billion poorest people on the planet" well then

ook this is too good http://www.newrepublic.com/article/116351/sex-and-single-zillionaire-author-tom-perkins-predicts-kristallnacht

The premise [of Perkins's 2006 "novel," Sex and the Single Zillionaire]: a wealthy widower named Steven Hudson is asked to be on a reality show where young women—or, as he describes them, "a gaggle of gold-digging bimbos"—compete for his love.

actual quote:

She held a long, black whip in her right hand. It had a leather handle and numerous strands whirling in the air as she manipulated it over the prone girl on the bed. Heather's body was glistening with perspiration as she moaned in anticipation of the whiplash, which seemed always to be withheld. The wind, the rattle of the windows in the old building, made it hard to hear what the two were saying exactly, but Steven made out, "Hurt me, please, mistress."

Father and son watched in silence. The eroticism between the girls was transfixing...

actual quote:

It was natural that they found their way into his bedroom. He turned down the bed and lit a couple of candles, while she withdrew to the bathroom. Shortly, she returned, wearing nothing at all. Steven came forward to kiss her marvelous breasts, but she said, 'My darling, I am so sorry, but it's the wrong time of the month for me. We will have to wait until we're on the yacht.'

He was frustrated. He shyly undressed to join her in bed. He could not recall ever feeling as adolescent, as embarrassed by his erection. She blew out the candle but didn't offer relief.

so i can't imagine anyone who's not a big twitter person really giving a shit about this, but the last 24 hours have been bizarre and oddly painful and weird

http://iacknowledge.net/in-depth-ows-twitter-feed-hijacked-by-google-exec-who-claims-ifoundedoccupywallst/

After taking over the account and apparently blocking access to any other administrators, Justine went on a twitter rampage. Some of her ideas were fairly lucid, some were common sense and interesting, but there was a toxic overtone of ego. For many who find a home in Occupy, the distribution of leadership amongst all of those who choose to show up is one of, if not the, singular defining attribute. So, having anyone, trans woman, cis woman, trans man, cis man, show up and say ‘Hey, I built this and now I am taking it back’ comes as something of a slap in the face.

same person as this person btw

for the benefit of those who don't click through, this is the creator of @OccupyWallSt & occupywallst.org (also now a Google employee) proposing fundraising for body armor & paychecks for a rapid response direct action team that could physically withstand assaults by the NYPD

when other members of the team that run @OccupyWallSt argued with her about the idea, she locked them out of the account

we don't know how yet, but his last FB post was about how all the strides he'd made in his mental health in the last few years were deteriorating, "and the whole rotten blackness is now as bad as ever."

there were nights we slept on the sidewalk outside a bank ("sleepful protest" seemed like a helluv an idea for a little while, til it didn't), and that's where i got to talk to him most. whenever anything positive happened--a passerby high fived us, a friend showed up with food, good news from some more exciting barricade somewhere--he'd yell out to the nearest person

"WE ARE WINNING ON ALL FRONTS, BROTHER. WINNING ON ALL FRONTS. SOLI-FUCKIN-DARITY"

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 13 February 2014 02:48 (ten years ago) link

thanks, forks and everyone, for the sympathies.

i never got to know him as well as some other people did--i was completely stunned when i heard the news in part because i didn't know anything about his mental health struggles. all i ever saw was this tornado of a man with a roar of a laugh, the kind of guy who would jump in front of me at a riot line to protect me from truncheons and then later laugh about what the bruises did to his tattoos.

his daughter is a little younger than me, and i only met her once at a march ("these are my friends, Maddy" " *skeptical sideye* "), but i felt like i knew her because he talked about why and how much he loved her all the time. it's hard to see that last pained post of his be met with an immediate outpouring of love, and to know that he seems to have taken his own life anyway.

there's a candlelight vigil for him in florida tonight, we're mourning him in DC, people are raising glasses to him in LA, and somebody in Ohio just screenprinted this

http://i.imgur.com/EWYvvkt.jpg

anyway. there are other things this thread is for.
