Facebook Timeline - Classic or Dud

TBH I like being able to go back and see mega old posts. It is amusing.

Personally, I love Timeline, especially now in the past few weeks where they've improved it to where you can easily jump to prior months/years without massive clocking.

I always thought the old setup was pretty lazy from a design standpoint. Sometimes I legitimately wanted to pull up posts that were a few months old and I just had to manually scroll back endlessly until I found it. I like how it neatly categorizes things by month and year and captures the 'highlights'.

A lot of my friends bitch about it, but if I were to look in their Timeline, I'd probably see that they bitched about the first FB changes back in 2006.

Some have said it's more difficult to navigate. I guess I don't see it....it's just as easy for me.

Trayce, what I find amusing is when I do that and I find out I've made the same status update like...three times in three years, without realizing it.

It can be a bit confusing to read but for the most part one is reading one's FL not a timeline, so thats ok. Other blogs've always had archive post links easily available so this seems like a catchup on FB's part, to me, being used to it on LJ and whatnot.

Yeah, I never understood why it took them so long to have that feature.

I was using Facebook most regularly when I was doing countdowns of favourite songs and films with some friends a year ago. So I don't really like the new layout. I liked it better when I could scroll through one entry after another. When I go back now, there are always gaps (unless I'm not doing it right).

I created a Facebook account just to see the new timeline, and I like it!

That was my opinion until Timeline, which is the only FB redesign that I think is a marked improvement.

whenever i'm on someone's profile who has it it's totally non-intuitive and i can't tell what i'm looking at.

I wish I could vote both.

I love it for myself, the layout is really nice and clean and I def like being able to go all the way back to the beginning to see what kind of crap I was rabbiting on about.

But it's definitely made it harder to have a fan page ... in the past the linear newsfeed was great for discussions but now they're all piled into a collated box together and it makes it a little harder to get that community aspect. I kinda wish they'd allow for both, tbh.

I have mixed feelings - some things about it are better, some are worse. Which is pretty much a resounding endorsement in comparison with other facebook changes, so...

i have resisted this because i hate facebook. i'm sure we'll be forced into it soon enough

it is fine. the constant complaining and "we hate timeline" image sharing by members of my family is a dud though.

I don't know much about timeline but if it requires me to put some effort into customizing my profile then I don't like it

haven't gone timeline yet. just don't know what to use as my cover art.

adding one picture doesn't seem like too much customization. what's the downside of the timeline?

Okay. Judging from the timeline profile that I'm looking at, timelime makes all the pictures you are tagged in REALLY BIG

you can turn pictures off. i don't really get facebook. they keep changing the privacy and other settings and it's utterly confusing.

They can't do that anymore. Once you get your privacy settings to your liking, they can't tinker with them one bit or else they'll be in breech of a legal settlement.

except that they have, in a way.

example:

i set up a "group" of FB friends who i don't want to have full access to everything i post/comment on. it seems as though, once timeline took effect, that all of those people were removed from the group and briefly could access my entire profile. i had to re-add them to the group. but what's more, i don't see that there is any way anymore to create a similar group and adjust the privacy settings accordingly. in fact users' ability to tinker with the privacy settings seems to have become much more limited.

They havent been doing it anyway, afaik! I've had my global post settings set to "post to friends but exclude [this large group of ppl I dont rly know]" and its always honored it. Except *once*, recently, which I suspect was either a glitch, or I fubared something. was easy to edit the few posts it'd affected (THATS another good feature)

right, but if i wanted to adjust the settings for that "group" or create a new "group" of friends that would have specific privacy settings, i have no idea how to do it, because the options just don't appear any longer in the standard privacy settings pages.

slow to load and navigate, plus the new double-column layout goes against the way everyone has learned to read on the internet. it's not just a 'bah change' complaint, it's genuinely bad design. the ability to flick to older posts is good but this could be done much neater (lowkey side panel, like on blogs and where the ads are now). can't really understand why they did this but i imagine it's something to do with making advertising more effective/prominent rather than make for a more user-friendly experience.

mine's not really that slow anymore tbh. it was only that way before they added the menus at the top where you can just select the year and month.

I do agree its a lot harder on CPU cycle and thus sluggisher. Hate to think what it must be like on older pcs

I like timeline. I've been using it since the first few days of opt-in availability and when I see people's pages with the old layout they look funny and ancient.

pyucch, it's unintuitive and it doesn't show links I commented on. But it doesn't really matter to me much, when would I be on my own profile?

Anyway, this is bothering the shit out of me. It's their new box for scheduling posts.

Just look at it. That is, if you can find it. Wasn't in its normal space today.

But it's also awkward in that you can't just type 1400 for 2 p.m. anymore. You can't even type 2:00 for two in the morning. It's like a credit card number field with invisible boxes. You have to click on the hour and type a number. Then you have to click on the minutes and type a number. And finally, click on the am/pm and type that.

Ok, you can tab through them too, but that's still three extra keystrokes that I never, ever use out of habit. I'll get used to it, but why.

And one last thing, I scheduled my post for 2:45 pm on Monday, but we'll be back on CST by then, so I really have no idea when that post will appear.
