a horrible leg cramp in your calf (calve?) muscle area

Never heard that term before, must be a US thing. Condolences.

Such a pure moment of nothing but pain/suffering
Eat some magnesium-rich foods or a vitamin
Have a shower/bath/swim
xp

Apparently SOME people never played Operation, the Wacky Doctor Game.

hate when you think it's over so you move the leg under siege and IT STARTS AGAIN

I thought from the thread title that this was some kind of drugs thing. Then the first line of the OP made me think 'oh you mean morning wood'. But no.

Thread reminded me that I had these pretty bad when I was pregnant the first time. Praying this pregnancy is charley-horse free, they suuuuuuuck.

Oh, they're so awful.

Bananas!

by bad luck ive never been sharing my bed when ive had one of these when ive woken up. calf cramp eased immediately by having someone raise your leg and pushing your toes down towards you stretching (maybe?) the muscle.

i once got two of these, one on each calf, walking down a, admittedly small, mountain. i later slipped and landed with all my weight on a leg that was completely straight, making the knee shudder in pain. ive never walked more slowly in my life.

Have woken up many times in my life screaming like an idiot with one of these. I've been told there is a connection to your diet, but I can't remember what it is you're supposed to be deficient in.

yeah it's a potassium/magnesium something thing supposedly but also dehydration, i don't know, personally i think it's random. and a terrible way to wake up! gaaah

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 17 June 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I think potassium is why you're supposed to eat more bananas.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Sunday, 17 June 2012 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

90% of the times it's happened to me it's been when im hungover. so anecdotally i guess that would support dehydration/lack of salts.

i eat like 7 bananas a day

My gran used to (superstitiously?) rub vinegar on muscles to prevent cramp. Have you walked over a grave recently? (How would you know?)

I've gotten these while driving before, it's the worst I feel like it'll make me kill someone one day

otm - getting them while driving is some diabolical combination of painful, annoying and dangerous!

I have heard that this also helps restless leg syndrome. Another horrible affliction apparently associated with pregnancy, btw. I'm wondering wtf soap can do about it? But I've heard from multiple sources.

franny glass, Monday, 18 June 2012 02:18 (eleven years ago) link

i hate when you get these and all of your toes tense up in a bent position and they will. not. move.

it is excruciating. one of the few times where i will deliberately bite down on my comforter or a towel so that i'm not yelling too loud and disturb anyone.

for the moment while it is happening you think, "this leg will never move again."

In France, it is referred to as a crampe (cramp) or, if the muscle is torn, as claquage. In Spain, it is known as a calambre. In Portugal, it is called a paralítica (roughly "paralyzer"). In Brazil, it has become known as tostão or paulistinha. In German, it is known as a Muskelkrampf ("muscle cramp") or more colloquially as a Pferdekuss ("horse kiss") if there is a bruise or "Muskelkater" ("muscle hangover")[7] without a bruise. In southern Italy, it is called morso del ciuccio ("donkey bite"), while in northwestern Italy, it is called vecchia ("old woman") or dura ("hard one" or "tough one"). In some areas of central Italy, it is called "water buffalo". In Norway, it is referred to as a lårhøne ("thigh hen"), in Sweden lårkaka ("thigh cookie"), and in Finland puujalka ("wooden leg"). In Japan it is known as komuragaeri (こむら返り?) ("calf cramp"). In Israel, it is called regel etz ("wooden leg"). It is called chaca ("rat") in the Chamorro language of Guam and the Mariana Islands. In Hindi, it is colloquially known as a 'bainta'[citation needed]. In Telugu, it is known as 'timmiri'.
