this girl TAVI, this 13-year-old-or-so style blogging girl who is so funny!
Set to star in new Nicole Holofcener movie.
She's doing a book event at Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple in Oak Park tonight, for a Rookie anthology. Might go.

― Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Thursday, 20 September 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link
She's a good person, smart, responsible, with a nice family (they live down the street a bit; I'm in Oak Park, too), so I have a hunch she's going to turn out great. I was talking to a friend about her, and my friend noted that she's made it pretty far without embarrassing herself. I agreed, but also noted how hard it is for a 13 year old to really embarrass themselves. That stuff comes later when they get older, start driving, start drinking, etc. But Tavi doesn't seem liable to go the screw-up route. She's unhitched herself from the fashion train a bit in no small part due to the skeez of the fashion industry, and she's made an effort to better integrate herself into standard high school stuff, I think. Just saw her Monday at Rosh Hashana services.
But yeah, anyway: she's had numerous magazine profiles, been on TV, wrote a book, founded a website, been featured in the NYTimes and had a feature on her in the New Yorker. If you don't think she's famous, you have very high fame standards.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 20 September 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link
This interview was pretty awesome. She's super level headed, exceptionally honest with and about herself and with reasonable expectations.

― skrill xx (cozen), Thursday, 20 September 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago) link
tavi is not 13 anymore
tao lin got a 'sizable advance' for his next novel which is coming out from a 'major publisher' -- god even talking about him it's easy to slip into aspects of his online schtick -- has had a couple of minor things about his personal life/online schtick become semi-'stories' -- also was somewhat referenced obliquely in the 'controversial' hbo tv series 'girls' -- (also, mumblecore)

Considering how famous she is in her early teens, to other teens, I think she's likely to be present in public consciousness for my entire lifetime. If she doesn't make a move into a seriously entrepreneurial endeavour (I hope she doesn't) then she's probably already seen the height of her fame and that's just OK, I love her writing and she's totally awesome

the recent malcolm in the middle reunion got me wondering if the kid celebrity burnout syndrome is bad enough that there's a culpability in even spectatorship, or if it's just a thing where only the worst cases make the spotlight and it's no worse than just normal kids who are good at something.

easily one of the fifty thousand most influential people w/teens
how hard it is for a 13 year old to really embarrass themselve
this is crazy i think! teenage embarrassment is way more linked to how embarrassing teenagers inherently are than just some goofy/drunken stuff they do. that she's so level headed & sage & smart, even out of a teenage context/standard - so ie she's a good interviewer, writer, &c - reps v well for her.
I love her writing and she's totally awesome

Tavi seems really grounded and unspoiled; good for her. She's had extreme fash-holes paying attention to her and it hasn't seemed to turn her head.
J-Ho's mother was the features editor of the Minneapolis paper and there was open hostility towards teenaged her for the nepotism aspect of her opportunities, and for being available as a go-to person about riot grrrl when there was supposed to be a 'media blackout'. It is very easy to be hurt by scenester bitching or to find yourself stepping on toes when you do media things as a teenager. In the UK there was a post-riot grrrl rush of clever teenaged girls eg Emma Forrest/Caitlin Moran starting their writing careers when most people were sitting GCSEs; every magazine had one, they're all around 35 now and most of them are successful because they had a head start, and any fuck-ups or burn-outs on their part were probably short in duration and happened before they were really adults, or seen as such by commissioning editors.

J-Ho seems pretty level-headed these days, I think she's turned out pretty well and not sure why she's being held up as a "worrisome" ideal for Tavi.

Maybe she could have been a neurosurgeon or something? It just seems like a bad deal. Would any of you want this kind of attention visited upon you at that age, knowing how it could end up defining you?

― Roz, Friday, 14 June 2024 07:34 (seven months ago) link
I've known people like this, that have an obsessive need to connect with someone that has, well not exactly fame as such, more a cache of shininess...
So, they may well be silent in your company, or make vague small talk, but won't be actually witty, charming or "fun" unless the said object person is within earshot. Why waste your best anecdote if the audience is sub-par and you won't be able to repeat it once the audience is 'bigger'...

― buzza, Friday, 14 June 2024 10:33 (seven months ago) link
idk it definitely feels like an homage to Fan Fiction, esp the supposed email from Tavi at the endI'm confused by the timeline, tho. so she first hears about Tavi in 2010, then meets her 12 years later (=2022), then "years went by" before she met her again 2 years ago (=2022????). maybe it doesn't make sense bc it's partly fictional.
― jaymc, Friday, 14 June 2024 14:35 (seven months ago) link
WTF is this? also anyone who has had a "fan" knows it feels a lot like having a stalker who claims to be benevolent. maybe i don't get it, but this reads as "strongly unhinged" to me. is that the point?
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 14 June 2024 14:53 (seven months ago) link
reads like modern era nyc-based vibes-based not-quite-autofiction. not really my thing but I feel like it's meant to wind up the audience a bit in the purpose of conveying anxiety
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 14 June 2024 14:55 (seven months ago) link
xp - "fan" in scare quotes on purpose -- i obviously don't think all fans of things are quasi-stalkers. to be the fan of a person/admire a person and their output and try to be their friend/know them intimately are not the same thing.

Just remembered Tavi dated Ezra from vampire weekend too, when she was 18 and he was 30 iirc. Also iirc there were some whispers several years ago about him not being a particularly great dude to her, but I don't know if there was truth behind that. She wrote an article about it but didn't name him, but seems like it might have been him.
