My only criticism of this show is that they need more door slamming. Otherwise, it's perfect.

My other random thought: I like to pretend this is a spinoff of Friday Night Lights and Mrs Coach really did go off and get a country recording career. She's pretty much JUST like Tammy.

Also, whoa! I never did watch Whose Line with any regularity, and definitely didn't remember Chip Esten from that show, but watching youtube clips of him is seriously weird after being familiar with the Deacon character.

Caught up last night.

Yeah, the election win scene was really bad. Also, as much as I hate Powers Boothe's character, he's being underused on the show. He's like a prop they pull from the closet.

That one popular song that Juliet's fans want to hear but that she was refusing to play was really great, and if that was already a hit of hers then I have a hard time with the show's early concept of her trying to become a more mature artist and hitting walls. By contrast, Rayna's "new song" at the San Diego show was totally blah.

The best song of the past couple episodes was the "Change Your Mind" thing that Gunnar and Scarlet sang in the writing room, though. Dayummm.

Avery, oh Avery.

I don't view the above characters in the same way, but I kind of view their current stories in the same way...uninteresting and a) make Deacon interesting again and b) leave Avery out of Nashville altogether at this point.

This is not a great show by any stretch. Sometimes it's not even really a good show. I do love Mrs. Coach, though, so I'll keep watching for as long as it's on.

The music's usually good, and always a plot point. Really like the way Juliette Barnes is going---a sympathetic character, but don't try to be nice to her. Some good comments on Rolling Country 2013 and links from there. Sheffield's blow-off in Rolling Stone was way off, and way premature.

Only interest about the political stuff is Powers Boothe, who once played the Rev. Jim Jones. More Powers, dammit!

glad to see Nashville is finally getting some attention as a city, having grown up there. This show can be next level great, and the 2 ladies in it are really, really good at their jobs. ABC, tho, as usual, has creative problems sometimes. it's either they nail it or miss it entirely.

I only lived there for about 5 years, but it gives me warm fuzzies to see locations I recognize pop up all over the place in this show.

I finally watched an entire episode of this show

it is stupidly entertaining, but manages to present itself in a manner that makes me want to claw my eyes out even while I'm enjoying it

it's very weird, specific cognitive dissonance I don't really remember feeling with another show; the closest I can think of is how I'd enjoy Buffy if I ever saw it but I had zero desire to ever sit down and actually follow the show

I can understand that, sort of. Every other time but the hour I'm actually watching it, it seems really not all that well acted or put together or even compelling in any way. While I'm watching it, though, I feel totally differently about it.

Totally. And I always have that thing in the back of my head: 'there's no way anyone would pay to see these people perform'.

But Connie is <3 and the soap is so goddamn addictive to me. Mr Veg even watches it, and he normally hates stuff like this. I think it's the cute girls + Connie factor that reeled him in. He likes the broken-bird girl.

S2 debut wasn't great, except for the fact the producers built a time machine to go back to Spin City, kidnap 1990s Connie Britton, and make her film the flashback scenes with Deacon. Because she looked for real fifteen years younger in those scenes.

The fall finale was nuts. Too much stuff crammed into an hour.

Best S2 development so far? The fact the show has been able to take Avery, the most loathesome character from S1, and turn him into the most saintly person in the whole cast in S2. Not sure how that happened or why, but good for him.

I am so impressed with the way they've repurposed Avery, and how his arc has done a total 180, he's almost my favorite character now!

I still love this show so much, I don't know why I don't update this thread more.

Kinda nerdy and silly but: do you think that the Evil Label Man engineered Big Hat Cowboy Singer to hook up with Rayna to try to smooth things over behind the scenes? It just seemed SO convenient the way Big Hat dropped her like a hot potato as soon as she said she was pulling out of the label and going on her own

He's evil, but he also put Layla in her place over the TMZ leak when he said there'll be another singing show runner-up just like her next year and he'd sooner burn her than destroy Juliette's catalog sales (at which point I said "woo!").

Mr Veg got the 2 volume Nashville soundtrack for me as a sort of joke...we were listening to it in the car the other day and it's actually kind of enjoyable. I didn't think I'd like it without the show but it's kinda fun

Yeah, things are happening but are they important things? Even with two people dying since the midway point of the season, it all feels really low-stakes.

the live portions were strange; the performances were good but the way it looked was really weird

completely counterintuitively given how much I hate contemporary country music when I encounter it in the wild, if the entire show was nothing but musical performances I would be very much on board; I am wholly uninterested in the permutations of relationship drama (the industry scheming can stay, though; that was the best part of the season 1 finale).

the music definitely is great

the show is getting more and more ridiculously soapy as it goes on but that's the part I love. stupid manufactured drama wheeeeee

haven't seen the new episode but i love the weird mix of mundanity and hysteria to the soapiness. one second there's the most banal relationship drama, the next someone is faking a miscarriage with a vat of pig blood. that there's this excess of great genre exercises instead of a handful of songs they pimp episode after episode (don't they realize glee got away with this cuz they were pop covers rather than originals?) just adds to the absurdity

it's so counter-intuitive that a tv show would have you go "wow that's a good song" multiple times an episode and then you never hear that song again.

like if the monkees did "last train to clarksville" just once

in an episode with six other songs

i ended up buying the soundtracks for all 3 seasons, and most of it plays really well; I'm impressed by how many songs hold up to repeated listens

even Avery's weird emo stuff from the first season has grown on me

Even though I kinda knew it was going to happen I still bawled when they sang to her on the hospital bed because I'm made of corn and cheese obv

My solution was to put everyone BUT Rayna, Deacon, Avery and Juliette into a car and drive it off a cliff but oh well

This CMT season is really low budget & not-good

but I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth at my show still being on the air in any fashion at all

I'm glad I can let go of this show now. Plots were crap and the songs aren't even good now like they were in the first season especially.

Maybe if Maddie becomes mute as a result of this I could keep going.
