Large, dutiful two or three stack steam ships 1900-1940, preferably surrounded by tugs, preferably in NY harbor or somewhere with palm trees, making big sounds, OR going across the ocean. Polished wood and brass fittings, officers doing the rounds, heavy labour below deck, Monsieur X promenading in a straw boater, little Eugene with a balloon on a stick, Miss Z looking out pensively over the surroundings.
Second option: some sort of large, impressive steam engine circa 1930s, either a nice noble red/green/black one going through English countryside OR one the colour of filthy steel pounding through the prairies past clapboard farmhouses in the States, either way, throb of it in the ground, massive head of smoke above, tension of silent waiting tunnel mouths and stations. In the compartment a man in a wide-brimmed hat who knows they plan to get him, be it sooner or later.
