I think it was because nuns used to have to wear their nun getup when out and about. I don't think they have to do so anymore. But I could be wrong.

That's what I was thinking--after Vatican II (don't know if there was any formal decision on this subject), nuns started wearing their habits less and less. (I went to a Catholic school, and none of the nun-instructors wore habits on the job). It's probably a chapter-by-chapter thing, but I was under the impression that in general nuns didn't wear their habits publicly, unless they were conservative enough to protest against modern informality.

It was intriguingly weird when I was dating an ex-Catholic boy who had also gone to a Catholic school--had my nun-teachers/his monk-teachers taken vows because they weren't "conventionally" attractive? (More likely, the other way around,)

Used to get off on the same subway stop with a nun. If they ever make a movie of my life for whatever ungodly reason, I'll be sure to shoehorn that in somehow.
