Figured this deserved its own thread.

Can I just say, the death metal bar episode....lol. This is one of those shows that's more entertaining the more OTT it is.

and the bizarre bar concepts, like Characters (which my parents almost visited in its old incarnation), or the cook that puked after he ate soup that was clearly teeming with bacteria.

Jon Taffer screaming at people with his eyes bugged out is instant classic always. or watching people trying to work with the bar/kitchen experts screaming "COME ON!" at them.

and soooo many tears.

omg at them having to blur the contents of the toilet in the men's room in the latest episode. soooo disgusting.

the Piratz one recently had to close because they were "between cooks" according to their FB page.

My husband recently PVRed all of these for some reason. They infuriate me so I only watched bits of them. I hate all the assholes who are like $50,000 in debt but won't change the bar name to make it more profitable. Why are there so many of those guys?

The pirate episode was one of the all time shitshows. A plus entertainment

wait what, why are ppl talking about piratz? oh heavens. i remember they were on some show like this and then like a month later they closed down to go switch to the pirates theme and now they're back to the pirates theme and i go there every once in a while and it's packed. it's like one of two bars in downtown silver spring and not as crammed and muggy as the one across the street.

they're very snotty on their FB page, spent an inordinate amount of time bashing Taffer, it's kinda like if your bar is as awesome as you say, sell it on that, not negativity.

Watching the Characters episode now. Weird sitting in front of a screen watching people sitting in a car watching people eating in a bar while commenting on the taste of the food.

waitress screwing up the names of drinks in comic fashion ie "Tom Palmer" or "Harvey Headbanger" seems scripted, esp since she repeats Harvey Headbanger wrong a mere two seconds after the original person said it.

The rockstar bartender is extremely cute though.

no clue. probably not, but who is doing well? their drinks are v cheap and their staff is probably overpaid given what's expected of them. and they're still employing a belly dancer.

Still on "Characters" - The bit explaining the 'authentic' moonshine concept where the phlegmy narrator says it used to cause blindness was pretty good, but I have no idea what the word 'authentic' means. I also got rockstar bartender confused with punk waitress, who is absolutely stunning.

I need to see the pirates episode. Getting the impression Taffer is pretty off-putting.

Oh man. The guy in the piratez episode with an eye patch. He was so sad that he might lose the only job he's qualified for. Playing a one-eyes pirate while tossing your sword around.

Anyway my favorite part of this show is the crazy hi-tech shit he installs. Computerized cocktail makers and the like that cost tons.

in the last episode he essentially replaced the entire staff. it was kind of funny.

eye patch guy is the best! i was trying to remember our last waiter, he is seriously committed.

i normally hate these kinds of shows, but this is a guilty pleasure

I think the pirate bar episode is notable for being one of the few shows of this type where they took a bar with a theme that limited its appeal for the after work crowd and somehow came up with a worse idea

imo that's the funny part of the show, they have a good scope of rehab and profitability, but I wouldn't trust any of these people to come up with a bar idea from scratch beyond "it's a sports bar" or "irish bar" or whatever and call their dude who designs bars like that

there's something to be said for having an efficient, clean, friendly space for a bar that fits into the neighborhood and having the clientele really set the tone, but any time this franchise attempts to do anything other than remove some of the rough edges and get rid of obvious missteps it's kind of bad

what was the place toward the beginning of the show's run that was basically a frat binge drinking party? still amazed at that one

they keep showing that damn "murphy's law" one with the dead rats in the kitchen and the foundation having to be redone

Am watching Marley's on the Beach now (this is the third episode I've seen). The 200 plants have started to complain, as if they had no idea they'd have to wait so long to be served after, like, all 200 of them swarmed the place at once. I'm not sure if it's scripted / nudged along or if the people are only lacking in self-awareness.

I keep trying to look at the labels to see what kind of rum they're using... it's not Captain Morgan, is it?

Im Pissed that it didn't air like it was supposed to. I set my DVR to tape and it taped another episode. So what if it aired. Its not like someone from Spike shot the dude. Its life, the show must go on. Stop being a bunch of sissy babies and get over it. Come on Spike let me get this episode.

asked our waitress about the show, she wasn't there for it but was told the funny story about how taffer instructed the dude to be really lewd to his wife when she came in "undercover" and he said something really lewd and it made taffer so angry he stormed in and punched the guy and now there's a lawsuit

the re-rescue episode was surprisingly anticlimactic.

btw, has anybody seen the competition show Barmaggedon? they basically take two bars (usually successful) and swap owners for a day and then see who wins based on who increases the other place's revenues the most.

interesting concept, but it fails on a number of levels. One day's revenue when compared with averages can rise or fall based on any number of things outside of the new owner's control. Likewise, the only changes the owner could implement that would have any real impact on sales are promotions (ie, changing or adding happy hour) or increasing sales per ticket/improving table turns, as anything like a menu or philosophical change would need days or weeks for a downstream impact to be seen.

I like it as its more lighthearted and less tabloidy than Bar Rescue, but I don't get that it makes much sense....still, some potential if they tweak it a bit.

lol they are rescuing the Copper Rocket, a bar with a douchey owner about 20 minutes from me. my brother is talking about crashing their grand re-opening to get on tv.

After the Piratz Tavern fiasco, with all of the vitriol in social media and the press, it appears that the owners pulled up stakes and moved to Florida. Their new bar is named Bar Refuge.
