damn how do you people live in this arctic tundra

went to Publican last weekend, yum!

bnw, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:00 (ten years ago) link

Since this is a lesser cold streak than earlier in the month, I'm going to defy it. Which means running at least 3 times this week.

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

The only thing keeping me alive is the idea that spring will definitely come eventually. That and a few other things, but mostly that.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

I am already tired of winter and it's only January 21st.

ruth rendell writing as (askance johnson), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:10 (ten years ago) link

You mean already January 21.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:13 (ten years ago) link

Milestone dates for winter haters:

02/26 - Historical average daily high temp reaches 40
03/09 - Time change
03/20 - First day of spring
03/21 - Historical average daily low temp above freezing
03/23 - Historical average daily high temp reaches 50
04/16 - Historical average daily high temp reaches 50

TBH, January has gone by quickly for me. Still, February typically awful. Keeping these dates in mind helps me focus on what is to come. But then it can still fuck with me and snow in April like it did last year.

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

Whoops, typo in the last one, meant 60.

Hi new thread!

carl agatha, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:14 (ten years ago) link

Hi friends. I have been on a little ILX break this month and now I have a new job starting in February so I'll probably be continuing my ILX break for a bit. But I like being in touch with you so please email if there's anything going on, and I'll at least be lurking. Just imaging me floating around like an internet ghost.

Yes, that's a very nice pic, Dan.

I'm normally OK w/ winter but this winter has been trying.

Hi NA. I was just searching for a Space Ghost video and "internet ghost" reminded me of Space Ghost so now I'm going to share w/ you one of my favorite things.

Are you guys familiar w/ the Urantia Foundation? Their HQ is directly across the street from my home.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2884/12072695565_c6f24dd7e8.jpg

The just put up that flag, which led me to finally google them. It's an odd organization, but not as creepy as I expected (hoped).

The main purpose of the foundation is to provide for the dissemination of The Urantia Book and to ensure that the text remains as unaltered as possible.

The authors introduce the word "Urantia" as the name of the planet Earth and state that their intent is to "present enlarged concepts and advanced truth."[1][2] The book aims to unite religion, science and philosophy,[3] and its enormous amount of material about science is unique among literature claimed to be presented by celestial beings.[2] Among other topics, the book discusses the origin and meaning of life, mankind's place in the universe, the relationship between God and people, and the life of Jesus. It has been described as "a rich and complex moral narrative, equal parts Tolkien and St. Paul."[4] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Urantia_Book

Sounds like How to Good-bye Depression: If You Constrict Anus 100 Times Everyday. Malarkey? or Effective Way?

dan m, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:24 (ten years ago) link

Ha yeh.

I was hoping it was a cult. That would have added interest to my duller days. And it would have made me more popular w/ Leticia L. Lechuga.

Je55e, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:28 (ten years ago) link

I dunno, uniting us with celestial beings via Tolkien and Jesus sounds just fruity enough for me.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

Yeah for real.

I'm normally OK w/ winter but this winter has been trying.

It's not been trying for me in the same way summer can be, but I feel very sad that so much of my leave has been spent cooped up inside bc of the weather. The handful of times Ivy and I have go out have been so delightful.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

I think she's hearty enough to go outside more now if it were high 20s but waiting for a bus/train in the teens/single digits seems like a bad idea if I can avoid it.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link

i am just barely hardy enough to go out in this
i feel like a dried up leaf just waiting for my leaf bones to crumble
need sunlight/warmth/to not wear this gigantic worm coat anymore

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I wish I had the constitution or fortitude or shining optimism or whatever it is that's possessed by the people who get jazzed for this weather. It's like someone vandalized the outdoors.

Je55e, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 02:28 (ten years ago) link

Or did your area get significantly more snow than where I live and work?

Je55e, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 02:29 (ten years ago) link

Both I think! Definitely drifting, but also amazing shit tons of snow.

Is anyone else just not getting mail? We haven't gotten any mail in at least a week, maybe more like a week and a half. I would assume there was just no mail for us except we were supposed to get a Netflix last Thursday and it hasn't come and the estimated delivery dates on those are pretty much always accurate.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

Our mail was a bit fucked up after the Cold of Doom, but it's been back to normal for the last couple weeks.

ruth rendell writing as (askance johnson), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:43 (ten years ago) link

Ours has been really intermittant since the Poehler Vortex. My New Yorkers have been coming like a week late and we'll go 3-4 days without anything and then everything all at once.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:44 (ten years ago) link

Mail delivery in Chicago has always been a bit laissez faire, in my experience.

I Melt Your Face (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:00 (ten years ago) link

It's usually pretty reliable at our apartment, which is what makes it weird. I just submitted a complaint form on their website so I'm sure that will fix everything right up.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:00 (ten years ago) link

Now your mail carrier is going to poop in your mail box wtg

carl agatha, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:25 (ten years ago) link

I think our mail has been pretty normal? I think it's unusual to get no mail, not even junk, for a week and a half for sure, though. We at least get some kind of sales paper or charity solicitation bullshit every day.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:27 (ten years ago) link

We had a couple of days of mail.

Jeff, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:28 (ten years ago) link

I got a call back, apparently it's a problem with the carrier's access to our building specifically, so I passed it on to the landlord.

I've definitely gotten more ~~chill~~ about what people wear as I've gotten older* although I do get very IA when people wear things that are too warm for the weather, like furry hats or jeans and knee-high boots when it's in the 90s.

*which is an attitude I'm actively trying to cultivate as Ivy gets older and starts picking out her own clothes. I got a lot of garbage from my family for my personal clothing preferences, be they on trend or my own ideas, because they were not the exact same as my elders' clothing preferences, and I want Ivy to feel like she's got all the room in the world to be as weird as she wants on that front.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 15:13 (eight years ago) link

anyway, jaymc, in the spirit of the temporarily on hiatus horror movie marathon we hosted as a more comfortable alternative to the Music Box Massacre, come hang out on our deck.... let's see not this weekend or next weekend but the weekend after maybe and we'll play selections from Pitchfork artists and you can pee in the alley behind our house and drink beer out of plastic cups.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 15:14 (eight years ago) link

LL thanks for the info on Summersonic, it looks awesome. I'll be out of town the 15th and 22nd, but maybe I'll try and go on the 8th?

I felt pretty good about skipping Pitchfork this year. The appeal has always just been seeing a bunch of bands I like in one convenient location and there was no one I was super-pumped about seeing this year, and the weather was disgusting this past weekend.

Me, Sarah, and Ben have a new band called Shredded Sun and I just put up an EP we made on Bandcamp: https://shreddedsun.bandcamp.com/

dan m, was it you who is really into Royal Headache? They're playing at the Empty Bottle on Aug. 19 with Sheer Mag opening, Sheer Mag is amazing. I probably won't go bc it's a Weds night but I'm tempted.

I don't know about "really into" but I've liked what I've heard of them. I'll keep this in mind.

The thing that keeps me away from things like Pfork is the weather, mostly. I fuckin' hate it so much. Fests in general are still fun, though. I didn't go to this year's edition but the PRFBBQ last summer was one of the greatest DIY events I've ever attended. Also R and I saw Murder City Devils at Thalia Hall last Monday and I wasn't even dead to the world the next day, despite being up until midnight on a school night!

dan m, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 16:18 (eight years ago) link

I was at Pitchfork for a few hours on Friday, said hi to some friends and poster (like, silkscreen) people, but it was hot and I was not into it, so I just went home. Next day I totally skipped out and spent time with the family at the pool, or out of the rain/in the A/C and otherwise doing mundane stuff, and I never felt bad, not even for missing Sleater-Kinney, one of my fave bands, so fave that I saw them a bunch the first time around and feel good enough about my memories that I don't need more, tbh. With the rare exception, most of the acts there I'd rather see in a club, except that when they do play clubs I don't see them, which basically means I ended up ahead.

Also, for the first time I really did feel old! It was like being in a field hanging out with our babysitters and their friends. But that is neither here nor there. Lots of music to enjoy not outside with thousands. Like Eleventh Dream Day this Friday. Or Mekons last week. Or all sorts of shit not in or around a hot muddy field.

to be completely honest the last moments I spent at pfork fest years ago was hovering over an ex in the medical trailer after she got sunstroke for what, in retrospect, were completely dumb reasons as I overheard ghostface and raekwon playing, a show I really wanted to see. then we left and I haven't been back since :/

Upright Mammal (mh), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 18:13 (eight years ago) link

My ex had what might have been sunstroke at the first pfork fest, but then again it could also have been side effects from eating two gigantic pot brownies. Either way I missed most of Les Savy Fav.

dan m, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 18:16 (eight years ago) link
