All time dud IMO.

What is this, Teatime with Donald Peers?

No.

Wait.

I think I need to know how long we're talking here.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:12 (ten years ago) link

when i was teaching in new england i was surprised to learn how trendy this is again among high school students

Mordy , Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:13 (ten years ago) link

Long at sides and back + non-existent on top = MEGADUD.

Generally speaking though - enormous dud. There are very very very few who can pull off long hair well.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:15 (ten years ago) link

Shaggy sorta longish maybe chin-length hair is often ok but I assume we're talking like long wizardy I really like classic rock type hair.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:16 (ten years ago) link

Sigh.

Thread premise is NOT EVEN RONG. Ronger than rong.

I follow a Tumblr which is basically just photos of hott dudes with long hair, all day long. And it is a thing of beauty and a thing of joy.

The only men who hate men with long hair are those who are folicularly challenged. You're just jealous; you'll get over it.

these birches is awful (Branwell Bell), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:17 (ten years ago) link

I so wish I could pull it off. Unattainable classic.

jmm, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:19 (ten years ago) link

classic. Wish I'd grown mine long before I started balding.

bilbo bobbins (how's life), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:20 (ten years ago) link

Is this becoming a thing again? I hope so. Fed up of short hair + beard on people who don't have to have short hair (like me) cos they'd look stupid with long hair. Also long hair doesn't work well with cycling helmets / caps. Not with a head as large as mine.

the drummer is a monster (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:22 (ten years ago) link

My kid has long hair. It looks great on him. All the rest of the dudes in his class are pretty much buzz-cuts. So happy for him.

bilbo bobbins (how's life), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:23 (ten years ago) link

if you mean "parted down the middle" "or growing down your back" dud dud dud

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:23 (ten years ago) link

You guys are weird. Maybe we're thinking of different types long hair. It can look OK on a very select few but the guys who often sport really long hair are usually the exact kind who shouldn't.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:25 (ten years ago) link

all three duds

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:26 (ten years ago) link

DUDDDDD on every level for me (having it, finding it attractive in a sexual way, finding it a good look in an aesthetic way)

my head overheats if i let my hair grow even slightly, no idea how the long-haired cope

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:26 (ten years ago) link

Guys in first pic least objectionable. The Fabio type hair is more often than not usually just often. I know one male person who it works on but he's a tiny androgynous elfin folk/rock singer dude and I think most anything would work on him.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:28 (ten years ago) link

guys, if you wanna be my lover gotta cut all your bangs

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

That should have said "Fabio type hair is more often than not usually just awful". It's early - I'm not awake yet.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

The middle pic is pretty awesome. I always envied dudes with curly long hair like that. Stephen Perkins.

Complaints complaints

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

Guys in first pic least objectionable.

My hair is getting towards that length at the moment, more out of laziness than any particular fashion choice.

As a general rule, dud. There are tons of notable exceptions, but most of those exceptions are extremely beautiful humans who would look amazing at any time regardless of hairstyle. And tbh in most cases I would probably prefer those dudes if they got a haircut as well.

franny glass, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:31 (ten years ago) link

Ned, you're Ned. Normal rules do not apply.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:31 (ten years ago) link

Which is to say, I can't imagine your hair any other way. It suits you. It works. It's Ned.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:32 (ten years ago) link

Also long hair doesn't work well with cycling helmets / caps.

my head overheats if i let my hair grow even slightly,

Reasons number one and number two why I don't generally wear my hair longer than I do. Also, my hair gets really weirdly curly if I let it get too long.

Middle guy was in a Wednesday afternoon 6th form 'enrichment' film class I did. All I remember about him is that in the first session we all had to introduce ourselves and give some information. I'll never forget his: "My name's Barry and I'm really into weaponry."

I had long hair as a youth when I was exactly the kind of dude who shouldn't, did all the wrong things with it, and probably am biased against ever having hair that is longer than would cover my ears ever again

mh, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:41 (ten years ago) link

yeah I looked a little like that only less blonde and less masculine

mh, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:41 (ten years ago) link

total classic imo. branwell otm upthread. wish i could pull it off, my hair is just jet black curls and it grows out rather than down, which is why i keep it pretty short. i'd love to have long straight hair. i'm not a metaller but i pretty much always dig that look if done well. there's a good tradition of longhairs apart from metallers, too, you're in good company - native americans, hippies, ned raggett. it can be done poorly a la fabio but i don't think fabio would be any better with shorter hair.

marcos, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:41 (ten years ago) link

native americans, hippies, ned raggett.

mh, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

and by long, i mean fuckin LONG -- shaggy shoulder length is not enough it should really come down pretty far on your back

marcos, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

Classic if it makes the person who has it happy.

Dud if it was forced on them by someone locking them in a basement and refusing them scissors.

emil.y, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:43 (ten years ago) link

also if there is some curl it can still look really cool, e.g. kurt vile

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2013/4/4/1365095323218/Kurt-Vile-008.jpg
^^would kill for that look

marcos, Thursday, 30 January 2014 14:44 (ten years ago) link

Hey, much like people who are not men, some people have really nice hair and some don't. If you have hair with a nice texture, quality, shininess, whatever, AND it's good for your face, the cut is tailored to you and your life, I'm sure it can work. Also, welcome to the hygiene and beauty world that women live in if you want a certain effect, ie straightness, curliness, more shine, more lift, less lift.

But my lizard brain is fucked up about this, in terms of personal preference. Short hair/no hair is the only thing I'm attracted to. I dunno maybe there are exceptions somewhere in photos of fabulously attractive famous athletes or something but basically that quote otm. ^^

Here is Papa Bell plus a pair of Baby Bells, also in 1973, also with lovely, long, luxuriant hair, which is how I believe all adult males should essentially be:

Thanks!

I think we have somewhere a "what did you used to look like?" thread for adorable baby pics and the like. I do like the idea of a "post pics of your parents in the 70s" thread but also wonder if it could lead to badness, coz, like, I haven't asked either father or brother if they're OK with their pics being posted here.

I wz one of those teenage boys who had long hair 'on principle' without paying attention whatsoever to how it looked.

hmm this is me except I'm not teenage or a boy and the only principle I have long hair on is that I was tired of being asked if I was a boy or a girl when I had short hair (which I also paid 0 attention to and was too plump-cheeked/square-faced to suit)

I was going to paste some long-haired former crushes but GIS kept also providing pics of them with short hair where they looked even hotter so my endorsement of their hair began to feel redundant
