I don't know enough about the bands' histories to know if they were connected in any way, but I hear a lot similiarities. Having only recently got into Days of Wine and Roses, DS is becoming one of my favorite new discoveries -- I can't choose here.

I call bullshit on this one. Listening to the best of Dream Syndicate today and it's one amazing tune after another. "Halloween", "Tell Me When It's Over", "Merritville", "I Have Faith" - damn Wynn really had a way of inviting you into his world and putting his arm over your shoulder, yet never fully letting you be comfortable.
Much as a dig The Only Ones, it's DS all the way.

only ones ruled. did dream syndicate ever rule? nope, they didn't. they were good though. but not great. only ones were great.

i would even take the only ones over the saints! yeah, you heard me. and nobody even asked me to.
― scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link
That's just crazy talk, Scott. Saints over both of 'em. Especially when the horns came in!
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link
i always want to like the saints more than i do. it's weird. i want something to be better than stranded and nothing ever is. whereas, with the only ones, i find all their stuff to be equally addictive. my favorite saints album is actually all fools day! so, i'm just some sorta weirdo.
― scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link
i'd take the weirdos over the saints too. and the dickies. and maybe even the nuns. definitely the avengers over the saints. germs album is better than first saints album too.

Yeah, I finally bought the Dangerhouse and Live At The Masque series and have been immersed in LA punlk too.
But really, the best Only Ones album is the Peel sessions! Their proper albums never did them justice.

yeah, agreed -- Only Ones Peel Sessions is by far the one I want to listen to the most. Proper albums definitely have their moments, but there are some poor production choices ... Anyone buy the new reissues?

Gotta dig out my copy of The Peel Sessions. Streaming some best of right now in lieu of.

It's kind of like the ideal of what you want every live band to sound like but they never quite pull off.
