This is awesome, getting a similar but arguably more consistent kick out of this as the Field's last album earlier in the year.

I could see Kate adoring this.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I have no idea of what people are hearing in this.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 26 October 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Layers and layers and layers of gorgeously beatific fuzz plus some truly uplifting military-esque drum patterns.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

first song sounds a little like someone strapped black dice to the front of a freight train made up of power chord synths

mh, Monday, 26 October 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm hearing people who listen to this respond either rapturously or disgustedly; not much in between.

I AM NOT ONE TO PURSUE GAME, MY FRIEND - NO, INDEED. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh, i wld prefer a version of black dice that was MORE aggro, not less

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I would prefer a version of Black Dice that played shit that sounded like Creature Comforts for about 8 hours straight, but that's neither here nor there.

At its worst, this sounds like a more accessible, dancey version of recent Black Dice. At its best (SURF SOLAR, LISBON MARU), it sounds like a freight train made up of power chord synths exploding angel vaginas.

I've been hammering this album for days to an extent that I now have loops playing permanently in my head. This has gripped me much more immediately than Street Horrrsing, which I enjoyed but never really got into, though I must revisit it with my new-found Fuck Buttons loving perspective.

pretty excited for the london show tomorrow; their biggest headline show to date i think + Clark and Andy Weatherall DJing so will be a great night

contenderizer otm but hav u ever listened to pre-b&c black dice?

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 17:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i've gone from "hey, this is a lot better than the first one" to "woah this is k-awesome" very quickly

Likewise.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 26 October 2009 19:17 (fourteen years ago) link

hav u ever listened to pre-b&c black dice?

― plax (I know, right?}

Yeah, I been listening since the Gravity single. But, honestly, I'm kinda glad they dropped the HC noise angle.

from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Monday, 26 October 2009 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm only half with u on that since creature comforts is maybe my favourite album ever

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, it's one of my favorites... Definitely my favorite BD record.

black dice + spiritualized?

m83 + boredoms?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 26 October 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh super roots 10 isn't a million miles away

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Anyway, this is such an insanely formulaic record (Fancy Orange Buttons thing), and it's such a GREAT formula. Take one vaguely BOC-like bonkety-bonk percussion loop, run the shit out of it, stick a freight train made of power chord synths exploding angel vaginas on top, and go to town. Thing it calls to mind more than anything else is a M83 take on Vangelis. Set Fire to the (Chariots of) Fire.

CU: entire print run

serious -- running strong for the best thing I've heard in 09

from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

u r right it is insanely formulaic tho

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

should buy it, i just have a 192 leak which is prolly only halfway there

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

formula means shit when the most thrilling parts about this are the SOUNDS

cutty, Monday, 26 October 2009 20:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I actually think its a lot flatter than street horrsing

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

always love how they bury the guys's vocals in the mix tho

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Ai agree about the majesty of SOUNDS tho. Plus it would be good for getting married to. Or like montaging honeymoon photos.

Big mountain! Hotel lobby! Her look pretty!

i found the album very effective when i was warming up for a bicycle race--chariots of fire type inspiration

cutty, Monday, 26 October 2009 21:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I want to ride around listening to this with my fists up in the air like a giant V-for-victory. For several hours. Except it's cold.

from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Monday, 26 October 2009 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

So much better produced than any M83.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 26 October 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

didn't like this the first couple listens, then listened to it on headphones and did a 180. pretty awesome. at the same time, not much empty space in there - kind of fatiguing to listen to

well-timed yall. i picked this up over the weekend but just got to it today and damn, it's a hell of an album. i always love it when bands turn a solid first record into a really really great second one. and i'd like to register my approval of this description:

a freight train made of power chord synths exploding angel vaginas

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

also for an album made w/all electronics (i assume anyway) you can just TELL that they had a blast putting it together

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

much as i love this album (possibly my favourite of the year) i don't think it's any better than the first one (probably my favourite of last (?) year). less shouty vocals, yes, but i don't buy that there's more groove here.

toby, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 10:55 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm hearing people who listen to this respond either rapturously or disgustedly; not much in between.

I'm pretty ambivalent, tbh. it's OK, but as with street horrsing, I find the noise and drones and wooze enervating; the beats tiresome.

m the g, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 11:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Really love it, but think the first was a little crazier/better. Also, isn't Lisbon Maru a bit of a retread of Sweet Love...? Definitely one of the albums of the year tho.

Wax Cat, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 11:40 (fourteen years ago) link

my fully-automatic record player scratched the shit out of side b, sigh.

GEDDY LEE JAZZ MINT (Future_Perfect), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 14:54 (fourteen years ago) link

How are they live? I'm seeing them weekend after next with Growing, hoping this holds up well live.

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I loved 'em (see above). Seen them twice now and if you get them in the right venue they're LOUD.

just what is so thrilling about the part in the lisbon maru when the synths come in? it gives me the chills

cutty, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 13:01 (fourteen years ago) link

especially on big ass cans with tons of sub bass

cutty, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

i think its that their music is not about songwriting, it is about exploiting the frequency range to its fullest

cutty, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 13:04 (fourteen years ago) link

yup yup

very beginning of this album never fails to recall the 'wonder-inducing', repeating melodic theme from Goonies for me. Like, notions of Chester Copperpot, et al. Track 3 is def the "images from wedding montage" track, without a doubt. Heavy Mogwai-y vibe, etc.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Thursday, 29 October 2009 20:55 (fourteen years ago) link

dang, track 4 is even more of the "wedding montage," victory-in-nature vibe.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

who likes the new album? i'm debating whether i should get it or not
