is Even In Darkness an Outkast album?

Jordan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:09 (sixteen years ago) link

See, now we're arguing!

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Do you really see 'Got That Purp' as an Outkast album?

At least as much as "Speakerboxx" or "The Love Below", especially given (1) that everyone but Andre is on the album
(2) Anything Big Boi related from Idlewild had its genesis on Vol. II

I can see the flip side, sure - would you call the Wings albums Beatles albums, or Tom Petty albums Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers albums?

But its got that Southernplaylisticcadillacfunkymusicforyourtrunk vibe to it. That's GOT to count for something.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:11 (sixteen years ago) link

No it doesn't!

HI DERE, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:11 (sixteen years ago) link

No it doesn't!

That's not arguing! That's mere contradiction!

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

No it isn't!

HI DERE, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Saying "everyone but Andre" is on the album is like saying everyone but Garfunkel is on the new Paul Simon disc and trying to convince me that it's a Paul and Simon release.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

lol

HI DERE, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Or Art and Paul. You get my point.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Why the fuck does everybody hate SB/TLB? I'm voting that because more OutKast is better OutKast. Even the album tracks are great. "Love Hater"? "Roses"? "Flip Flop Rock"? "Church"? Just great great stuff.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

"The Rooster" is fucking awesome.

HI DERE, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

after all my hateration 5 yrs ago i did finally admit speakerboxxx is the shit & i play the fuck outta it

and what, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Look, it's semantic anyway. If you're arguing that you like 'Got That Purp' enough that it eclipses some of the weaker albums on that list, I'd likely agree. I'd say that the second volume of Purp is easily better than the Idlewild soundtrack and is just as good as Stankonia... I'd be hard pressed to do a TS for Kryptonite vs. B.O.B. though.

Now do the "Put your fucking headphones back on" line.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Saying "everyone but Andre" is on the album is like saying everyone but Garfunkel is on the new Paul Simon disc and trying to convince me that it's a Paul and Simon release.

Not at all. The seminal things about Simon & Garfunkel were their voices, and Simon's songwriting. It seems to me the seminal things about Outkast-as-Outkast (meaning those albums titled "Outkast presents..." etc.) are MUCH more varied, and Got Purp, Vol II has most of these except the presence of Andre. It always seemed to be a "Take Andre out, and you get Got Purp, Vol II."

Makes you want to punch me in the throat, doesn't it?

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i still listen to speakerboxx a lot

Jordan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, but even Big Boi's only on about a third of Got Purp 2.

rev, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

"Speakerboxxx" is a one-word album title.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll the challenging person to stick their neck out and say I like more songs on The Love Below than on Speakerboxxx.

"How dare you not appreciate the Scooby Doo soundtrack! I'll rape your pets!"

"land of a million drums" is the jam!

if you're seriously insulting the sd soundtrack you better get to wrapping yr hamster in black electrical tape dude

If you're saying that Outkast can still be Outkast without Dre, I emphatically DON'T agree with you; the synthesis of the pimp and the poet is one of the Iceberg Slim intangibles that made/makes the band unique. When there's a lack of balance or they're not absolutely shining, that's when you get too-much-peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate (their respective verses in Intl. Players comes to mind) and it can get a little outta wack. You can still hear that blend work in Royal Flush, so it's not as if they can't do it anymore.

And I like 'Land of a Million Drums' but it's mad corny.

ATLiens for sure

I get that - its the essence of Aquemini. Aquarius and Gemini as one, and you're right - that's arguably THE thing about Outkast. But I always take Got Purp as a footnote to the Outkast tale - A small part, but STILL a part. Sort of like "What Big Boi did when he went back to his house after hanging out with Dre all week."

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

So, I guess with that, I have officially torpedoed my own argument.

Off my game. Iceberg Slim name check caught me like a One Inch Punch to the Adam's Apple.

The votes/order for the bottom four in this poll is surprising.

spkrbx/lvblw getting more than southernplayalistic is offensive

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:21 (ten years ago) link

nah SPCM is inconsistent in parts, The Love Below in particular gets way overhated. although the second half does have some of the worst shit ever

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 05:34 (ten years ago) link

I don't know, revisiting SPCM a few months back, the thing that struck me about it was how incredibly consistent it was. I don't know if there's a bad track on that thing.

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:51 (ten years ago) link

there's not one weak song on southerplayalistic. there's less than a handful of good songs on lv blw

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:55 (ten years ago) link

Ppl just voting for Speakerboxxx?

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:59 (ten years ago) link

"Call of da Wild?" that seems like an obvious one to me

don't really connect with that album the same way I do most of their other ones tbh
