Do you really see 'Got That Purp' as an Outkast album?

At least as much as "Speakerboxx" or "The Love Below", especially given (1) that everyone but Andre is on the album
(2) Anything Big Boi related from Idlewild had its genesis on Vol. II

I can see the flip side, sure - would you call the Wings albums Beatles albums, or Tom Petty albums Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers albums?

But its got that Southernplaylisticcadillacfunkymusicforyourtrunk vibe to it. That's GOT to count for something.

Why the fuck does everybody hate SB/TLB? I'm voting that because more OutKast is better OutKast. Even the album tracks are great. "Love Hater"? "Roses"? "Flip Flop Rock"? "Church"? Just great great stuff.

Look, it's semantic anyway. If you're arguing that you like 'Got That Purp' enough that it eclipses some of the weaker albums on that list, I'd likely agree. I'd say that the second volume of Purp is easily better than the Idlewild soundtrack and is just as good as Stankonia... I'd be hard pressed to do a TS for Kryptonite vs. B.O.B. though.

Not at all. The seminal things about Simon & Garfunkel were their voices, and Simon's songwriting. It seems to me the seminal things about Outkast-as-Outkast (meaning those albums titled "Outkast presents..." etc.) are MUCH more varied, and Got Purp, Vol II has most of these except the presence of Andre. It always seemed to be a "Take Andre out, and you get Got Purp, Vol II."

When there's a lack of balance or they're not absolutely shining, that's when you get too-much-peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate (their respective verses in Intl. Players comes to mind) and it can get a little outta wack. You can still hear that blend work in Royal Flush, so it's not as if they can't do it anymore.

And I like 'Land of a Million Drums' but it's mad corny.

I get that - its the essence of Aquemini. Aquarius and Gemini as one, and you're right - that's arguably THE thing about Outkast. But I always take Got Purp as a footnote to the Outkast tale - A small part, but STILL a part. Sort of like "What Big Boi did when he went back to his house after hanging out with Dre all week."

So, I guess with that, I have officially torpedoed my own argument.

I don't know, revisiting SPCM a few months back, the thing that struck me about it was how incredibly consistent it was. I don't know if there's a bad track on that thing.
