man that darling buds first LP is a classic from start to finish

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

it is, isn't it? I have all the singles in their desperate fancy sleeves as well!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

the second album isn't much good though, i don't think

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

crying shame. same thing with the primitives

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

likewise, though i really like the 2nd primitives album, and they were better live too. (I saw the primitives at the arse-end of their "career", and they were fukcing great! - the dbs were really good the first time i saw them, but unbelievably terrible the second)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spirit

They had 3 entries in the latest edition of Virgin's "All Time Top 1000 Albums". Doesn't sound "forgotten" to me (and btw. Family had one album in that list too)

i don't know for sure but i think Mark Seymour is now a solo artiste.

I knew that -- H&C officially disbanded sometime in the mid-'90s and Mark Seymour the solo artist entertained the Australian Olympic athletes back in 2000 -- I was just inquiring whether they were just obscure or practically being erased from music history.

Occasionally VH1 Classic surprises me by throwing in "Throw Your Arms Around Me" in the "All Star Jams" block, and I do remember seeing "Is There Anybody In There?" and "Talking to a Stranger" (I doubt I can express to anyone how much I adore that song) early in the year, but it doesn't seem as though they get much attention these days, aside from the odd mention of, "You know, Russell Crowe is a big Hunnas fan."

Well, yeah. I think Russell is a fine actor, and I even had a crush on him for a couple of years ca. "The Insider", but, um, so? I would rather there be more fans around here of the Hunnas, or that the local radio station that plays '80s music included H&C in their playlist.

Oh well. Just dreaming.

Now onto Geir's post:

I don't think Men at Work are "erased". I think as long as there are people such as myself out there who at least remember "Classic MTV" and "The Big '80s", Men at Work will never be erased. The Belle Stars? Didn't they do "Iko Iko" for the "Rain Man" soundtrack? I liked that cover. Bucks Fizz? I don't think ANYONE could forget THEM. And anyway, weren't they going for a long period of time after the '80s were over? I thought they were the British equivalent of Menudo. Kajagoogoo? Never forgettable, not as long as "Too Shy" keeps getting airplay on your everyday generic "best mix of the '80s, '90s, and today" radio station. Blancmange? You might have a point there. Really horrible, too, as I thought Blancmange were a good group. Classix Nouveaux, being erased? Over my dead body! Sal Solo & co. will NEVER be forgotten, not if I can help it! *attempts evil cackle, coughs*

Jellyfish

Jellyfish probably have a bigger following now than back when the band existed. There are lots of people like me who love the band despite not having discovered them until long after they broke up.

There is an entire international underground of Jellyfish influenced "soft" powerpop acts.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wasn't there just a Jellyfish box-set as recently as 2002? That's hardly "erased by history," now isn't it!

The Jellyfish box set is pretty grand, actually.

Indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Aw, don't get mad, Alex. I didn't know about the Jellyfish box set or underground following. It's heartening to know that other people still remember them fondly.

In the interest of fairness, I'd like to rebut:

Cake (well, I live in the Bay Area and they still come around fairly often)
Hum (and I used to live in Champaign with many many people who are still hardcore fans)
Wallflowers (dude, come on, it's Bob Dylan's kid; they're not going anywhere)
Toadies (I have friends who still talk about them, albeit more often as a punchline)
Drop Nineteens (ditto)
Ned's Atomic Dustbin (I still own God Fodder. It's a good album! Really!)

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love Hum too. There are a lot of bands on this list that are nowhere near obsolete.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Steve Kowalski is a good band for this list. They only put out a couple of tapes, were on a couple of compilations and did a 7". I saw them a bunch of times and my old band played a couple of gigs them later on after Jake had left.

There was a few good bands in Bloomington around that time that never got to make a record. Trailside Killers/Joyride/Speed Luxury was a great band.

"Bucks Fizz? I don't think ANYONE could forget THEM"

Erm, well, all people seem to remember of them these days is "Making Your Mind Up", those detachable skirts, winning the Eurovision, and Cheryl Baker. Nearly everything from "Making Your Mind Up" onwards seems to have been erased from history, which is a shame because every song after that from the original line-up was superior in every way. I got the "Greatest Hits" (circa 1984/5) on vinyl secondhand, and "Making Your Mind Up" doesn't appear until the second last track on side 1, and is immediately undercut by the awesome Sparks-like "When We Were Young" which follows immediately after. Before is the equally impressive "Now Those Days Are Gone", which features the group in acapella for almost the opening half of the song! The opening track was actually their biggest hit "My Camera Never Lies". "Land of Make Believe", which probably the only other song most people remember from Bucks Fizz, is relegated to the opening of side 2.

No if and buts about it, Buzz Fizz was definately hard done by!!!!

dunno what happened to the rest of Babes in Toyland, but Kat Bjelland has gone on to Katastrophy Wife. they've either done (or are doing) split 7"s with The Kitchen, and i think they're playing a show or two with them as well. in Glasgow, was it...? can't remember now...

janni (janni), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

The fact that Fishbone hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet...

(either)...means you all aren't totally daft and acknowledge that, even though they've never had one platinum nor even gold album, are a very influential band who also is still writing, recording, and performing very amazing music right now.

(or)...proves that history has erased them, so much so that their existence has been completely wiped out of your minds, and thus you can't even remember them existing to notice they're "disappearance".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nick, you'll be happy to learn I called Fishbone "wildly influential yet undersung" in this week's (May 12) issue of The New Yorker in the "goings on about town" section. You're welcome.
