"Speakerboxxx" is a one-word album title.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 15 May 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll the challenging person to stick their neck out and say I like more songs on The Love Below than on Speakerboxxx.

"How dare you not appreciate the Scooby Doo soundtrack! I'll rape your pets!"

If you're saying that Outkast can still be Outkast without Dre, I emphatically DON'T agree with you; the synthesis of the pimp and the poet is one of the Iceberg Slim intangibles that made/makes the band unique. When there's a lack of balance or they're not absolutely shining, that's when you get too-much-peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate (their respective verses in Intl. Players comes to mind) and it can get a little outta wack. You can still hear that blend work in Royal Flush, so it's not as if they can't do it anymore.

And I like 'Land of a Million Drums' but it's mad corny.

ATLiens for sure

I get that - its the essence of Aquemini. Aquarius and Gemini as one, and you're right - that's arguably THE thing about Outkast. But I always take Got Purp as a footnote to the Outkast tale - A small part, but STILL a part. Sort of like "What Big Boi did when he went back to his house after hanging out with Dre all week."

So, I guess with that, I have officially torpedoed my own argument.

Off my game. Iceberg Slim name check caught me like a One Inch Punch to the Adam's Apple.

Da Art of Storytellin Part 2 always unfairly overlooked for its predecessor. love the distorted vocals an that piano intro

ATLiens top 5 album for me all time, Aqumini top 15

Stankoniaforsure. ATLiens is the only one of theirs I've never "got"

The votes/order for the bottom four in this poll is surprising.

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:16 (ten years ago) link

spkrbx/lvblw getting more than southernplayalistic is offensive

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:21 (ten years ago) link

nah SPCM is inconsistent in parts, The Love Below in particular gets way overhated. although the second half does have some of the worst shit ever

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 05:34 (ten years ago) link

I don't know, revisiting SPCM a few months back, the thing that struck me about it was how incredibly consistent it was. I don't know if there's a bad track on that thing.

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:51 (ten years ago) link

there's not one weak song on southerplayalistic. there's less than a handful of good songs on lv blw

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:55 (ten years ago) link

Ppl just voting for Speakerboxxx?

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Monday, 14 April 2014 05:59 (ten years ago) link

"Call of da Wild?" that seems like an obvious one to me

don't really connect with that album the same way I do most of their other ones tbh

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 06:00 (ten years ago) link

call of da wild is def the worst song on there but still low key nice

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 06:09 (ten years ago) link

Agreed on Call of Da Wild being the weakest track on SPCM, much as I love Goodie Mob in general. But one track that's weaker than the rest is pretty par for the course even on most classic albums (see "Mamacita" on this poll's victor). I don't think that's enough to label a record inconsistent.

good and relaxing like akon dont matter (intheblanks), Monday, 14 April 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

Mamacita is awesome what are you talkin about

marinate on that for awhile

probably worth noting that Rev is running the Outkast poll after sleater kinney wraps up.

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 18:11 (ten years ago) link

I could def. name more than one track each I don't mess with on Aquemini and especially SPCM, y'all are overly generous. Or I'm too hard on 'em, dunno.

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 18:59 (ten years ago) link

There are zero tracks (not counting skits before someone gets annoyingly pedantic) I don't fuck with on the first four albums.

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Monday, 14 April 2014 20:19 (ten years ago) link

also I told WmC someone else could run the Outkast poll cause I haven't been participating in single-artist polls at all

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Monday, 14 April 2014 20:20 (ten years ago) link

i might be able to do it

IKEA metaballs (Spottie), Monday, 14 April 2014 21:11 (ten years ago) link

The one thing that bums me out about Stankonia is I don't like the two tracks after "Toilet Tisha" and it always seems worse when there's missteps at the very end of an album

"Tisha" kinda-sorta works as a closer though

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 22:08 (ten years ago) link

speaking of skits though I'm actually cool with all of 'em on that one except "Kim & Cookie" (bet someone'll say that's the best one lol)

nova, Monday, 14 April 2014 22:10 (ten years ago) link

He got hisssssss
I aint get miiiiiiiine

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 April 2014 23:04 (ten years ago) link

yeah, actually fuckit most of the skits are classic. Pimp Trick Gangsta Clique is my personal favorite tho

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 05:50 (ten years ago) link

I could swear I read somewhere that Outkast and Goodie Mob wanted to put out a Pimp Trick Gangsta Clique album, but it never got off the ground.

Andre 3000: I wrote out the skits. It was like a parody of everything going on at the time. Back then all the hood record labels were called stuff like Slap a Bitch Records or Big Dick Records, so we made up the group name Pimp Trick Gangsta Clique. Me, Sleepy [Brown] and Cee-Lo were going to form an actual band called Pimp Trick Gangsta Clique. We recorded some stuff but never released anything under that name. It was really just a funny thing we made up for an album you'd buy at the record store.
