It's been a pretty good decade for these guys!

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

The Art Official Inteligence albums are good - Mosaic Thump is the better one (nice trick making the skits a showcase for dope freestyles), but Bionix at least has two great tracks, sampling Gainsbourg and Carl Tjader. The Grind Date is way more quality, tho - it's about as fun and exciting as a conscious rap release could get this decade. A lot of really cool beats, great guest spots (Ghostface, Flava Flav)...them doing "Much More" on Dave Chapelle is like one of my all-time fave popcult moments. Even the cover booklet is great (it has this calendar-style gimmick.) They've become pretty good producers, too, and this Supa Dave West guy they've got doing most of the beats on recent albums is a talent.

It's funny, I'm a big fan but I hardly ever listen to what they're rhyming about tbh.

I've only heard 3 and 2, but 3 > 2, so I'm tempted to try 4 next rather than 1.

The Grind Date is one of my favorite albums o fthe decade.

herbie mann on some gully shit (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:09 (twelve years ago) link

The first two albums:

"3 feet high" had lots of 'darker' moments, but everyone noticed the 'daisy' stuff.

"DLS is Dead" had lots of light/daisy moments as well, but people were expecting those but got 'surprised' by the darker stuff this time.

They are both great albums.

Grind Date is great because it suggests a world where De La Soul just kept recording, putting out a damn respectable album every two or three years. It's kind of a broken promise is that respect. Really good album, not quite a classic though (I actually prefer Bionix)

Evan R, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

Both the AOI releases are pretty great

Z S up HOOS down (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

absolutely. i would put out the argument that de la has a better hit/miss ratio than any other hip hop artists

Not crazy about the first AOI album but it's been years. Thanks for the dinner music suggestion!

5 album minimum, i think they go toe to toe with pretty much anyone
xp okay yeah, quik but i dunno if i'd put him over them so much as at the same level

Scarface, Ghostface

Z S up HOOS down (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

love them both, would not give them the same hit/miss ratio as de la

I still listen to the grind date all the time

will be furious if "complete catalogue" doesn't mean "complete catalogue" and it's just some studio albums

(D1CK$) (sic), Friday, 14 February 2014 04:07 (ten years ago) link

Like forks said I have everything as well but would be cool with random stuff. Kinda doubt it tho and just think it will be studio lp's. This isn't really for me tho I'm more excited to spread the word and just think its cool for them to do this.

Spottie, Friday, 14 February 2014 05:17 (ten years ago) link

This is basically the opportunity for me to go back and plug holes in my collection since there are a couple of albums I never had my own copies of (3 Feet and Buhloone in particular)
