2. While neither Jeezy or Gucci are what you would call svelte, Jeezy at least has the decency to keep his clothes on and not bare his pot-belly, crusty-nippled saggy pectoral muscles and crap tattoos which look like they were done by Waka Flocka Flame’s ma dukes at any given opportunity. De La may have once urged rappers to Take It Off back in 1989, but we’re on some Please, Mate, Keep Your Fucking Shirt On type shizznit in 2010.

ignoring all the broke ass white dudes who *gasp* related to the PE stuff more than "South Bronx" is dud too, but other than that, good clean fun. pretty sure brandon sodabread dude is brokeass too, but he's probably 20 and so didn't relate in the first place.

i thought the biggest fail was jeezy > gucci as mixtape rappers. i like 'trap or die' as much as the next guy, but even if you don't think he's a technical enough rapper or whatever, all those 09 tapes are solid as bricks and there's like a dozen of them.

they had no decent points. and why the fuck if u write for fat lace are you getting involved in bitter references to obscure village voice writers & bloggers? how much of your audience even knows who 'brandon soderwhathisface' actually is? unlike your dork ass most ppl did not find out about gucci mane thru internet rap nerd discourse

nah not really. there have been dudes out there who def got under my skin about this shit way more. that piece is way more off point
i mean for real ive talked about gucci w/ people whose taste in rap i genuinely respect & they dont get him either, good friends of mine. there are obviously problematic aspects of his persona & ive always said as much. for the friends i mentioned, those issues are predominant blocks to their willingness to check him out. but while i dig jeezy hes not a great rapper, hes a great rap artist who is a good rapper.

lol, i don't really get what u guys are trying to say about me but okay.
from the perspective of britishers unable to throw everything out the window theyve got used to wrt liking rap and non-comedically get on board with gucci on a grassroots level, surely it can't be that hard to fathom why a dude would prefer jeezy - it's not about lyricism complaints or anything so much as the way jeezy conducts himself with the familiar star gravitas of a classic rapper and more or less follows a regulation album type arc with (the recession being one of the albums of the decade as well. (iirc didn't jordan say much the same as all this at the time?) gucci's is a just a foreign kinda swag basically, though 'lemonade' is well capable of sending him over the top.
i mean it's funny cos once i mightve said similarish about jeezy, who at one point seemed to me the biggest rapper in the world who no one had a clue about over here besides being the guy on that akon 'soul survivor', the r kelly joint and that jigga one with the old horns.
at the same time though you can't ever say that deep rap interest in the uk hasnt had a romanticised kinda faraway othering at play from the very start - even if you look at that martorialist guy (good dude, good blog imo) he's been kneedeep in hyphy and bay area for what seems a fair old while, probably huntsville stuff too i forget, and it just doesnt feel as incongruous as repping 4 gucci. it's all weird and complicated and interesting where all the tipping points are, i dunno. also look at any rap radio show playlist here and folks basically have no idea what to play anymore.
not asking anyone to care but there it is.
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link
kinda disagree with dom being a good fit for fatlace btw, always associated them guys with an easygoing selfdeprecating thing and dude's shockjock impotent fury doesn't sit right imo. hhc most definitely however.
it's all love though, i lol at shabani nonda refs same as the next guy.

oh it's totally easy to see the thought process behind the 'average rapper' piece and i'm not even sure its perspective is uniquely british in any particular way. to me it's hilarious how they include the "we swear we're not trolling" caveat and proceed to troll troll troll, bullet pointing like 3 items with half of a single idea hidden among them.
― PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link
bay and huntsville aren't faraway distant in time so i kind of lost what you were saying re gucci there, can you talk about this some more
― men lie, women lie, hips don't (zvookster), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link
xp oh yeah sure no doubt on that, know the man know the work. just seemed to me like the crew huffing "uniqlo - fail" or whatever were having a bit of trouble with the rest of it though.
zvook i just meant in terms of the rules being a bit blurry wrt britishers digging on locale-specific stuff. huntsville is no big stylistic mystery tho i guess.
