decent band
― matinee, Saturday, 10 May 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link
Decent band, for sure. Neil Gust's songs & singing brought something to the table that was never present on ES's solo albums, not to mention a break from the overwhelming Elliott-ness, which of course is what the die-hards go for.

Decent band. Still listen to Dead Air on occasion.

Yeah, I like MCS quite a bit: "Rest My Head Against the Wall," "Get Lucky," "Plainclothes Man".

I really love Mic City Sons - "Get Lucky" is such a great album-opener, and I like Smith in mid-tempo menacing rock mode

Ha, "Elliott-ness" -- get it? I didn't even know I was making that pun! It's like it was whispered to me from beyond...

surely they could get this BY NOT LISTENING TO ELLIOT SMITH??
― latebloomer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 10:46 (sixteen years ago) link
I have never head this band, but that album cover is lovely.
― Bodrick III, Sunday, 11 May 2008 11:06 (sixteen years ago) link
i think they really only hit their stride on mic city sons, by which time they were basically defunct, but it's a great album.

i didn't think about Heatmiser for a long time, and then i was working this construction job and i found 'MCS' in an old cd wallet and we all listened to it. since then, i've been secretly being 17 again. bad and good thing there.

yeah, that's a dope album, as time goes by it gets closer in esteem to my favorite or 2nd favorite ES solo album
― some dude, Friday, 22 April 2011 12:25 (thirteen years ago) link
it's very good, the final tracks on it among the best things ES ever did.
― akm, Friday, 22 April 2011 13:51 (thirteen years ago) link
Yes. And the other guy's songs are just as good as Elliott Smith. Very very good record.
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 22 April 2011 14:10 (thirteen years ago) link
albums are decent at the least, I should relisten.
however, this band played the single most boring live show I have ever seen when opening for The Mekons in like 1992. not even bad, just ... nothing.

i mean can i just: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_UR61itZxo
i think the lyrics to this one are probably top 3 for him. it's also one of the last songs he played when i saw him on his last tour.

Yes. That record has remained strangely obscure.

yes and yes, sadly.

So, Neil Gust basically stopped making music after this, right?

I saw No. 2 open for Elliott a couple times and liked them, but never sought anything out.
― rip van wanko, Sunday, 21 December 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link
His last solo album was over a decade ago. Sounds like he's moved onto a new career.

I'm far more a fan of Dead Air and Cop & Speeder than Mic City Sons—particularly Cop & Speeder—and I'm having a great Saturday morning getting back into those albums again.
