All the Prince videos relating to Purple Rain are contained, as well other Prince productions for the movie - Time etc.
Pity they're not releasing any live footage from First Avenue to go with it - just a MTV award I think.

This Rage playlist would be close to comprehensive - but even then it's missing "Let's Pretend We're Married" & the original version of "Thieves in the Temple" and possibly/probably other songs.

The CD and vinyl present the record as, respectively, one and two long tracks. It's supposed to be a "piece." Briania had a vinyl version with regular "bands" that showed where each song began. We're happy for her.

was there a poll? can't find it for the life of me if so...
― piscesx, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 05:25 (twelve years ago) link
intellectually, this album has a lot of flaws, just in the sense of how a lot of it doesnt really seem properly finished (how good would dance on have been if it had a bit more to it?). but it has such an amazing feeling of pure inspiration running through it, it has to be one of his best. listening to it now for the first time in years, glam slam is so brilliant, just because it sounds like he starts the song again three times! "this thing we got its alive" sounds exactly right, for the whole album.

I'm a fan (I really think I have to play it through from the start when it's on) but a part of me will always wonder what it would be like had it come out in 89 - assuming he gave more time to SOTT
― Master of Treacle, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:07 (nine years ago) link
The Hits sucks...iirc some of the songs even fade early or are like these edited single versions
― Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link
at least they're edited versions of the right mixes unlike The Immaculate Collection.
so that Purple Rain 2-disc reissue set mentioned upthread is ten years late?
― piscesx, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:35 (nine years ago) link
Ahah. Ready for the Purple Rain 40 anniversary ?
― AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 07:31 (nine years ago) link
The older I get, the better this album sounds.
Shoutout to the extended ten minute mix of 'I Wish U Heaven.'

Eye agree. Eye no The Black Album has its fans but eye think Prince definitely replaced it with a superior record.

the proto-gfunk bass on Anna Stesia is sooooooooo slick
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 24 April 2016 21:26 (eight years ago) link
Yeah I don't see this album as a drop-off in quality (except in the very narrow sense of being the album after SOTT). It's such a relaxed and joyful album to listen to (though that description maybe undersells how hard it hits in parts). I feel like every genius artist with an extensive release history should have an album something like this in their back catalogue.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:02 (eight years ago) link
I just relistened. Unlike a similar relaxed and joyful album like 4 or New Morning, not one of these songs besides "Alphabet St" is essential. This and ATWIAD remain his worst eighties albums, but this is worse. I wouldn't miss these songs if he'd shelved them.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:31 (eight years ago) link
i am soooooooooooo not on yr wavelength on this one mang. Anna Stesia, Glam Slam, I Wish U Heaven are all on mah list.
and ATWIAD rulz
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:49 (eight years ago) link
man the 12" of I Wish U Heaven is amazing, I made a separate edit of part 3 cause I love it so much

― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:17 (eight years ago) link
How do you ppl not list eye no and dance on as highlights they are the best tracks on the album for me
― scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:49 (eight years ago) link
Honestly, I'd place this album in my shortlist of best Prince albums. All killer, no filler.
― Austin, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:11 (eight years ago) link
Negative reactions to this record always perplexed me. It has a few dull spots but most of his albums do. Eye Know, i wish u heaven, alphabet st, dance on, anna stesia are all top shelf imo.

Alfred not being into it particularly surprises me
― Tim F, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:25 (eight years ago) link
Yeah sorry Alfred. I had to LOL at "Batman better than Lovesexy" . Can I have what you're smoking?
Lovesexy is also a KILLER headphone/earbud album. It's probably the last time until maybe "Symbol" where his music sounded expansive. From "Batman" thru some of "Diamonds & Pearls" (or maybe only on "Thunder" on that album) his sound got really sample based, compressed and claustrophobic.

The FutureLemon CrushElectric ChairVicki Waiting
easy choice
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:29 (eight years ago) link
I love a lot of "Batman" and some stuff off GF but after Lovesexy the music definitely took a different step.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:29 (eight years ago) link
for killer headphone shit GB's "Elephants & Flowers," "Joy in Repetition," "The Question of U" await your discovery.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:30 (eight years ago) link
Yeah it's a really enveloping listen, so much going on but quite a gentle and approachable way.
― Tim F, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:30 (eight years ago) link
"Vicki Waiting" has terrible lyrics.
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:31 (eight years ago) link
not worse than "I Wish U Heaven." And so what?
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:32 (eight years ago) link
Guess what -- I've listened to all of his stuff on headphones. I was there, maaaan. But i don't want to get into a dick size contest here. I'll agree to disagree with you on the merits of "Lovesexy".
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:35 (eight years ago) link

Love that tour by the way.
not one of these songs besides "Alphabet St" is essential
awful opinion bro. "i wish u heaven" is endless
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 25 April 2016 04:05 (eight years ago) link
batman is great yeah but I'd consider it equal to lovesexy. even moreso if he'd kept "200 balloons"
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 25 April 2016 04:08 (eight years ago) link
The best thing to come out of Batman was the 'Scandalous Sex Suite' which was only available on the 12" anyway.
