I nearly went again on Sunday but err.. didn't. Some leather-clad homo-electro act from San Francisco seemed quite a draw.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:18 (twenty years ago) link

that would be zeigenbock kopf, n., and i don't think they actually made it up. one of them injured himself terribly in london the day before.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

eleven months pass...
did Ronan ever make it to Optimo?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 04:13 (nineteen years ago) link

No. I keep telling him to come. Also, what happened to the brwh scheduled for the 5th? Did it get rescheduled?

Next Optimo for me: The Go! Team one, I think. Would like to do Clinic too but don't think I will.

New Year too.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I am stuck as to whether I can do new year this year. I love new year optimo, but I have a potential (as in nearly confirmed) start date on a new job, in London, on 4th Jan.

So, when they confirm I have to find somewhere to live and move. And do NYE Optimo. I am sure it is possible somehow...

3underscore (___), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:21 (nineteen years ago) link

It surely is. When I moved up here I sorted out a place to live in advance and moved my stuff a week before, because I had Glastonbury in the way.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:24 (nineteen years ago) link

But the week before is Christmas Alba! These christian festivals are going to ruin my hogmanay!

3underscore (___), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:39 (nineteen years ago) link

ronan should come to aberdeen optimo.

take the megabus, ronan.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i would like to go to optimo

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:04 (nineteen years ago) link

wouldn't it be fun, if we could all be at optimo together?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:30 (nineteen years ago) link

shall we go in december. perhaps the 17th?

*@*.* (gareth), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i mean, that weekend. a christmassy thing

*@*.* (gareth), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:33 (nineteen years ago) link

lauren van pelt

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 12:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I think there's a London crew heading up to Optimo for Hogmanay and renting rooms / crashing somewhere the day after, not too sure yet - and depends what the Bugged Out lineup is like, but personally I'd prefer Glasgow...

MattR (MattR), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:13 (nineteen years ago) link

YAY! come to Optimo!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Sort it out the week before Christmas, ___. You don't want to be desparately looking for a place in a few days once you arrive in London, surely? You often can't move in straight away anyway. London accommodation is crappy and it takes a while to find something good unless you hear about something ON THE GRAPEVINE.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

:( knoxville is a long way away.

i attended the 1999/2000 hogmanay optimo at the art school..... i don't remember a single thing except a friend of mine stealing an entire case of mini tonic bottles.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

That is unacceptable behaviour. It's people like your friend that make it cost £25.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Stevem, never mind those bullies!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not going if he goes.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i know why you wanna hate me, cos hate is all i seem to see around lately

(they do play Limp Bizkit at Optimo right?)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I think so.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll be in Glasgow for the Franz Ferdinand gig the weekend before xmas, might finally get round to checking out Optimo.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I am certain I've seen that Optimo mix CD in shops already.

haitch haitch haitch (or any three repetitive sounds) (haitch), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:59 (nineteen years ago) link

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

The optimo cd is out in every country except the UK for some bizarre reason.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Damn, reading twitch's post again from February last year makes me all giddy about living in Glasgow again.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:51 (nineteen years ago) link

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Why is there a different release date for the Kill the DJ mix in the UK (apparently 31 January) compared to other markets? Kind of seems to run contrary to many record labels' concerns about P2P and means desperate punters are going to do their bit to support international mail services

angus-macdonald (Audiophonics), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I like thinking of myself as a desperate punter. I will buy it in January, though. I have too many records to buy.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

the delay in the uk release was because the uk press people wanted longer to promote it. as it had already been available on soulseek for months before the european release, p2p concerns had ceased to exist.

Very excited to see y'all are coming to Austin next week

Got 1 spare ticket for the Optimo Watching Trees festival if anyone is looking?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 20:53 (two weeks ago) link

want that 242 t-shirt.
i have one, but its too subtle and doesn't really make it clear re my love for 242.

mark e, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 21:04 (two weeks ago) link

ooops.
i have a 242 t-shirt,
but it's not clear as to what its about as it's quite random re the connection to f242.
in other news : every track on this video is bloody brilliant.

time for new beat revival !?

mark e, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 21:11 (two weeks ago) link

Yessssss, new beat revival now.

Watching Trees was magical, huge congrats to Optimo! Good to meet you stirmonster, wouldve said hi earlier when i was in a slightly less mangled state, but i could see you were a busy guy. Hope the recovery's going well!

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 10:01 (yesterday) link

it was a wonderful 24 hours. returning to normality today as I'm back at work but I'm still buzzing a little

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 10:13 (yesterday) link

question : how are African Headcharge without Adrian Sherwood on the mix ?
the non-AMS version have a gig near where i live later this year, and kind of tempted,
however, African Headcharge for me is all about the AMS production ..

mark e, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:11 (yesterday) link

They were good! The new lad on the buttons seemed handy enough. Pretty sure it was Steve Davis, unless i was more out of it than i thought (entirely possible)

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:20 (yesterday) link

I suspect I will succumb and go check them out.
I think the lad on the buttons was probably Pats Doktor ..
he has been a massive part of the reissue campaign re sorting out the masters and looks after the official On-U FB group etc.
ta for the nudge.

mark e, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:29 (yesterday) link

there were a few different mysterious characters up there. definitely bonjo though!

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 12:27 (yesterday) link

lovely to meet you in person nick. i'm still catching up on my sleep but still glowing from what a magical time it was.

so, this was AHC Soundsystem as opposed to the band. It involved Bonjo on percussion and vocals, a keyboard player whose name i didn't catch but was not Steve Davis or Pats Doktor and a DJ. it was good but i think AHC full band would be better.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 14:21 (yesterday) link

ha we kept telling Nick it wasn't Steve Davis but he wasn't having any of it

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 14:24 (yesterday) link

we were stood a snookertable's length away and i swear he was a deadringer for him

i know steve lives in the west country and is really into modular synths and weird electronics and stuff, it made sense to me :))

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 14:29 (yesterday) link

also stirmonster, there was hardly anyone around for them but the yusu and lupini early morning sets were some of the most transcendant music experiences i've had recently. so good!!

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 14:32 (yesterday) link

ha ha! he was a ringer for steve davis so i can totally see why you thought that.

i heard half of yusu and then had to go get a couple of hours sleep so missed the second half of her set and sadly all of lupini's. i heard they were great though sadly, or maybe sensibly, most people had chosen to get some sleep so crowd was apparently quite sparse for them.

quite a few people were disapointed with the beatless rave as they had read it as beatles rave and were hoping for eleanor rigby with added hoover noises.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 14:44 (yesterday) link

haha! that bit was dead good though! wish i could remember more of what was played, but jane 'it's a fine day' into 'halcyon' was a complete melter for me, jesus christ

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:01 (yesterday) link

going to keep a lot of people buzzing for a good long time i feel, that whole festival

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:05 (yesterday) link

oh the real stunning bit of lupini's set btw was her playing richard youngs' 'time is an avalanche' at full pelt, the sound just bouncing around that space like a cathedral, 6.30 in the morning, birds and trees just waking, sun not quite warming things up yet but trying, absolute head-expanding moment

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:15 (yesterday) link

i'm going to pass that on to her if you don't mind? i'm sure that will mean a lot to her.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:49 (yesterday) link

haha i told her myself straight afterwards, but i did look like a mumbling mud-splattered maniac tbh

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 15:57 (yesterday) link

ha ha!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 16:16 (yesterday) link

there were so many great moments but the Tia Cousins & Rosie Ama set, midnight Optimo set and that early morning sun with Yu Su (although I missed the first half) are my personal highlights

we did crack a lot of "Beatles Rave" jokes
