i went through that list above and decided i didn't really like anything past romeo except for hush boy - it's good because it's not the pop/garage format they were wearing on, but instead just a good funk / breakbeats.

Basement Jaxx are one of those bands that seemed to stop Mattering somehow, really abruptly. It's unfair to think that way, maybe. Some of their 2000s singles are pretty great but nothing came close to "Where's Your Head At" for me.

Ha indeed, still have those Banana Kru's as well! Always reminds of the great Thomas Bangalter reign from around that time ('Together', 'So Much Love to Give') which for some reason always seemed heavily linked, at least in my head.

I'm voting Where's Your Head At here, I gave up on these guys pretty much after Kish Kash, which I thought was mediocre at best. Their early singles (as compiled on this beast) still rule.

Dunno if they ever relased a GREAT single, but "Romeo" was their last really good one.

Their early singles (as compiled on this beast) still rule.

some of it's ok but the single edit of 'fly life' is their first GREAT single. the other stuff is all kinda polite.

I love the lairy thuggishness of Where's Your Head At. One of the few dance anthems that effectively doubles as a punk record.

(a) what's wrong with beer

(b) in 2001 lairy chanting house worked well. See also Par-T-One's "I'm So Crazy".

The trick is to only do it once rather than make a career of it.

a) too much beer (more than two pints) makes me feel bloated and a bit sick JUST LIKE 'where's your head at"

b) lairy chanting house has never worked for me - in fact lairy anything is pretty much a non-negotiable turn-off (except maybe WAKA style hip-hop)

I sort of think of 'Where's Your Head At' as cartoonish kids TV scream rather than lairy thuggishness anyway. There's nothing particularly threatening or confrontational about it.

It's only good if it punctures someone's pomposity, but as long as I've known kids TV to do it the guest has either been some kid or an adult that's fully signed up for it.

Yeah, forced is the word. 'Where's Your Head At' isn't particularly forced but I'm sure there are some teeth-clenchingly forced imitations from a similar era that I've forgotten all about. Probably by Freeform Five or someone.
