I listened to my vinyl copy last night, which is not in great shape so perhaps the remaster reveals new subtleties or something. Anyway, more than half of it is a stone bore.

an edited highlight's of mcc.'s solo career could be marvellous, i think. but i feel exhausted at the idea of listening to see what is actually good. like, oh! look! a record with trevor horn! now which is the good track.

thomp, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

or, like, 'the fireman'. there's three cds of that business now! i don't know how i feel about that!

This site documents all his mellotron use!

http://www.planetmellotron.com/revmacca.htm

Never knew about the mellotron sax setting. Apparently, that's what the reedy sounds on "Coming Up" and "Bogey Music" are.

second one's good, first one's boring, All The Best is a p good singles comp, you're welcome (xpost)

i dunno sic it seems to have both 'pipes of peace' and 'mull of kintyre' on it, that would go against my rule against listening to any record with two tracks with 'of' in the title

thomp, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

About ten years ago a friend burned a CD-R of Macca highlights: a diverse set of B-sides, album tracks, one-offs. It and All The Best are all I need.

Is that a mellotron on "Summer's Day Song?" Sounds like mellotron on the flute setting.

Yes. Always thought this one sounded like Paul had been listening to the second side of Before and After Science.

Love Paul but he's really annoying on most of this, no? I like the instrumentals.

really need to pick up this deluxe edition. this has been my favorite mccartney album since I got it on 8 track in 1985!

ha

I really liked Mull Of Kintyre but I was a kid when All The Best came out and I met all those songs so

"Pipes Of Peace" is a great song from a not-so-great album.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 08:44 (twelve years ago) link

no it isn't

thomp, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 10:18 (twelve years ago) link

I had "All the Best" as a kid, and I remember it started off great but halfway through really demonstrated why he was so hated, after the plunge into the most ultimate syrupy stupid lame cheesy pop you've ever heard in your life.

Much rather recommend either of the 2 solo records or "Ram" over "All the Best".

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

Haven't heard it in a while, but I remember listening to "Pipes of Peace" once in headphones and being super-impressed by the arrangement. (George Martin worked on that record, of course.)

timellison, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

Especially the bit toward the end, I think - is there a full orchestra on that?

side four sucks balls if you can't take Kintyre tbh

Looking at the personnel listings - maybe it's not that many players. I remember the tabla on there.

timellison, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

If "No More Lonely Nights" is the example of syrupy stupid lame cheesy pop, I've got my finger on SB ready to go.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

All The Best should have replaced "My Love" with "Press."

Yeah but this is while i was a kid. In this post-Ariel Pink world where 80s cheese is fine, I find it much easier to appreciate.

Ariel Pink. In a McCartney thread.

OK, so I brought back Then Play Long 36 hours after saying I wouldn't; let's just say "popular demand" is responsible, but anyway: http://nobilliards.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/paul-mccartney-mccartney-ii.html

Don't take away your blog, Marcello, I've only just started with it and it's so great.

I was surprised how many people said that to me (but like you I myself am anxious to see how the "story" turns out)!

Those hit counts? I'm responsible for a lot of those.

Ha, no way! Seems a bit weird to see 2015 McCartney (and his touring band) performing this song. It'd be great if he did a whole set of some of his more interesting post-Beatles numbers.

Actually really like that. His voice not being able to hit the high notes so much makes the chorus less annoying.

hey my parents were at that show. my mom hates that song, which is probably why it's taken so long for him to play it live.
