only heard one song (cover of a george duke song) and it was pretty great.

jaxon, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

I really liked the tune that was made into the "Dance Floor Dale" video, but the full-length didn't have anything else like it.

frogbs, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

the george duke cover is the best thing on the record. i did think some other tracks might be jaxon-friendly though.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

did anyone else listen to that lover's melt mix upthread yet? right up your street in particular, jaxon, i'd say.

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

what is the last "beat" mix he did?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

I thought thundercat just played bass, when I saw him a while ago he was pretty sick on it, didn't know he put out his own shit

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

he plays bass and sings on it, flylo produces, his brother plays drums, i guess austin peralta is playing most of the keys, etc

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

I'll check it out

the george duke cover is the fucking bomb!!!

Link for the The Lovers Melt 2 mixtape expired.

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Sunday, 4 September 2011 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I wanted to hear that mixtape or see a tracklist for the matter.

Ok you can find it here alongside some hints of 4 or 5 tracks inside.

http://thefoxisblack.com/2011/08/05/flying-lotus-lovers-melt-2/

cant decide about the duke cover. it seems like one of those covers where they think purely by slowing a song down it becomes deeper. which of course is false. the original actually has more emotional depth by being fast.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 5 September 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

its not quite like 4hero. no drum n bass breakdown at the end! (heard their version of rotary connection the other day and forgot it wasnt rotary until the drum n bass kicked in mid way).

please tell me he's at least sounding more like rustie than squarepusher these days

i could not get into pattern-grid world at all

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

this album is quite alright. I don't really remember anything about his other albums other than I enjoyed them at the time so I can't really compare them. I suspect that will be my response to this one a couple years down the road.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:23 (eleven years ago) link

Is Rustie the dude who had Seinfeld theme-style slap bass on his album?

mh is correct. "Hover Traps" is the slap bass track

Number None, Monday, 24 September 2012 11:35 (eleven years ago) link

this record is so damn good. it sounds beautiful too, maybe his most hi-fi? or maybe it's just that there aren't as many layers so each sound speaks better.

Cos the last album was squished to hell and totally doesn't last.

i haven't felt like listening to his records in months, so i'm really happy to want to listen to this on repeat.

Really anxious to hear this, holding out until I can pick it up next week. I've really loved p much everything he's done. Most excited for the track with Erykah, but I'm afraid I may be building my expectations up too high.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

this is pretty chill, loose

j., Monday, 1 October 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

I don't like this anywhere near as much as Cosmogramma, which had that whole enormous swirl feel to it even when it felt pretty loose and unstructured. This one feels more straightforward and somehow duller at the same time and I still don't feel like it's really going anywhere.

I wish he'd indulge his soundtracky tendencies more and his jazz influences less often. This one feels really murky.

Matt DC, Monday, 1 October 2012 08:50 (eleven years ago) link

but richard-san gave it an 8.5 in pfork

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 08:52 (eleven years ago) link

it's funny that i'm the first response in this thread talking about his "a milli" remix. i'm not sure i listened to more than three tracks by him since then but when i saw him at pfork fest this summer he dropped the "a milli" remix like 5 minutes into his set.

the late great, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

CoD is undetermined but someone in Allan Holdsworth's band mentioned accidental OD in a now-deleted online post.

Wasn't sure to post this here or in the Dogtown & Z-Boys thread. :-\
