Vinyl played at the wrong Rpm. C or D

The Melvins thread reminded me of this...

I remember reading someone's comments about playing Melvins and Helmet records at the wrong speeds a while ago.

**Play a Melvins record at 45 RPM** - "Hey, it's Helmet!"

**Play a Helmet single at 33 RPM** - "Hey, it's the Melvins!"

This knowledge may be a godsend to thrifty music consumers.

Wrong RPM music is a definite C.

Back in high school, before I had a record player, I used my friend's turntable to tape the Drive Like Jehu 7".

First I tried it at 45, but I reasoned there was no way the singer's voice could be that high or the music could be that frenetic, so I ended up dubbing it at 33.

I didn't realize my mistake for a long, long time--which is weird because I bought the album soon afterwards, and it sounded nothing like my inadvertently screwed version of "Bullet Train to Vegas".

(But at either speed it sounded different from what I'd been expecting based on the Superchunk comparisons in Spin magazine...)

PS That Konk song on the "Anti NY" comp sounds way better at 45.

I've always wondered if theres software that will let you "play" CD's at "33/45 speed"; Is there such an animal?

Why yes! Just click over to Goldwave and turn your regular speed .wav's and .mp3's into a virtual record with which the speed can be adjusted!

NEU!, second LP, side 2.

Andrew Norman, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Apparantly, the "Just for a day" LP by Slowdive sounds like the Cocteau Twins when played at 45rpm.

Try the opposite route if you can -- early Slowdive singles, mastered at 45 and played at 33, are just wonderful.

One time many years back, I decided to see what happened when the Fields of the Nephilim's "Sumerland" 12", mastered at 45, was played at 33. The result was just utterly awe-inspiring, a huge doomy sound which left myself and some friends in shock. Probably helped we were suffering from mild sleep deprivation, though.

g, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

there is a dj shadow 7" out called "dark days" which is the theme to a very good underground film released a year or so back. the 7" is pretty hard to find but grab it if you can and put it on at 33rpm without the center-hole-adaptor-thingy it sounds like spaghetti western my bloody valentine. or something.

i stopped buying (new) drum&bass 12"s when i realized that most of them sounded better at the wrong speed.

jess, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Classick w/o a doubt. Yes lp @ 45rpm = Rush. Spacemen 3's "An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music" (or whatever it ws called) Sounded great @ thee wrong speed. A bunch of Richard Wahnfried rekkids (Klaus Schultze music thing) sounded good played wrong as well. On of them actually had no speed lited on label or sleeve IIRC. I do miss this aspect of vinyl.

Norman Phay, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And Killing Joke's "Eighties" sounds like Nirvana when you slow it down!

i thought jaz coleman of killing joke settled out of court with geffen/nirvana over this very idea that "smells .." was some sort of rip off of "eighties" and that this provided coleman with funds to set up in nz and make orchestral rock versions of split enz etc ..

is this correct ?

George Gosset, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

oh, i meant nirvana's "come as you are" -- i think any link is just coincidence

George Gosset, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

philip glass' early stuff like 'music in fifth' played at 45 instead of 33 made me think i'd heard the future of all music. still good at the right speed but more mechanistic at higher rates

To try this kind of things on MP3s (in real time), there's this nifty pitchshifter plugin Pitchfork. From 33 to 45: +36%. From 45 to 33: -27%

doing this stuff with mp3s is like using porno DVDs - get a wax record and some other outmoded music hardware and fuck with stuff. "every little thing she does is magic" 7" slowed to 33rpm + if you fancy it get a discman / car cassettes player adapotrorotron device and tape the damn thing on high speed dubbing so it plays back slow. - gorecki's 3rd symph it is with stuey copeland hi hat as massive sheets of steel hovering over the horizon. also linda rondstadt & james ingram " somewhere out there" through similar process james ingram sounds like massive belching cave monster from space. endless kool stuff

George Gosset, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Are there any releases meant to play at either speed?

Lee Ranaldo's From Here To Infinity is listed as being "Vari-speed".

I like Slint's S/T 10" on 45. I found out later I'd been playing it at the wrong speed, but I didn't care. It sounds so much better sped up.

Vic Funk, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Me and my cousin had hours of fun running this CD full of cheesy "Music Samples" disks ($4.99 from Beast Buy) through GoldWave. The best was taking these hopelessly lame loops of "pop metal" riffs and slowing them down till they sounded by Michael Gira underwater.

Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The best varispeed record i've heard is the Lovely Midget 10" that appears to be pressed at a speed somewhere in between 33 and 45rpm.

I was going to mention that Renaldo's from 'Here to Eternity' is varispeed. But someone beat me to it. Still, given how hard that album is to listen to, I don't suppose it matters what speed you play it at.

I really used to love listening to my 33-RPM record that had Bruce Springsteen doing "Santa Clause is Coming to Town" at 45 RPM.

the only time i did this was by mistake - madness b-side - walking with mr wheeze .. an instrumental with large honking sax line. slowed to 33 it becomes massive and a lot darker. i now cant hear the track at normal speed as its so much better at the incorrect speed.

When I was in high school my friends and I were tripping on acid, sitting in a basement listening to records. Someone put on Slayer "haunting the chapel" 12" EP without switching to 45 rpm; "captor of sin" sounded amazing, really crushing and slow.

45/3 = 15
33/3 = 11
15/3 = 5
11/3 = 3.666

fractions are better than multiples of five. 33 wins.

Childhood Dansette discoveries:

1. Pinky & Perky slowed from 45 to 33 = two women, pitched just right. Like discovering that there is no Santa.

2. The Goons "Ying Tong Song" slowed 45 to 16 = Milligan/Sellers/Secombe, in their normal voices, again pitched just right, singing v-e-r-y slowly & carefully & deliberately. Much funnier than the original. (Which wasn't. At all.)

Conclusion: pitch-changing technology in 50s & 60s still in its infancy.

I spent too much time as a child wondering whether it "mattered" if I preferred something at the wrong speed and worrying over records that didn't have the speed labelled. And not enough time playing records at varying speeds.

Pinky & Perky slowed from 45 to 33 = two women, pitched just right. Like discovering that there is no Santa.

More recently, Shakin' Stevens' "Green Door" at 33rpm has a pleasing bluesy swagger.

Banarama's "Cruel Summer" 45 rpm played at 33 1/3 really captures the oppressive feeling of 40+ degree celsius summers.

My brother collects classic Victorolas, and he left one at my mum's house several years ago. When initially cranked up, it would play very fast and then slow down. Since I didn't have any classic platters to play on it, I used this old Shriekback "Nemesis" 12" I bought for 25 cents. The playback was marvelous! Unfortunately, the heavy, blunt stylus fucked up the record. Oh well, it was only 25 cents.

60s punk sped up sounds like new wave. I'm sure some creative folk have gotten ideas this way. Sometimes when I liked something a lot, I would play it at the wrong speed. Try Cocteau Twins this way, it's amazing. Anything with harmonies is trippy.
