...but they are so bland and boring ! another blando band to sell to Travis, Coldplay, Aqualung fans

djmartian, Thursday, 28 June 2007 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I KNOW they're boring but people are boring! Not everyone's going to listen to the good stuff; they don't have the concentration or open-mindedness to appreciate sophistication and originality! Take 'My Computer', for instance, who released 'No CV', a staggeringly good record, in 2005, sold about 50 copies (or whatever), and now no longer exist. I mention them because I know for a fact that Geir himself actually likes that album. Good on him!

Ok, it's quite clear. We need to kill all students.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 28 June 2007 16:54 (sixteen years ago) link

He has an extremely coherent, and well-defined point-of-view which appears to be pretty much unshakeable. I never agree with anything he says, but he's consistent and no matter how much flack he takes, never resorts to personal attacks or profanity. While I think he could do with a black friend or two, I'm actually going to go with Classic. He's exactly the kind of guy a good board needs. The fact that he got his own thread probably already indicates that anyway.

Another Coldplay/Travis clone? Well, if they're good (that is, good tunes), I will probably like them :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 30 June 2007 10:35 (sixteen years ago) link

They sound more like Air than like Coldplay IMO. Completely OK, but to get into my Top 40 they need to be a bit more than a Myspace band. :)

Serious question: Why are everyone so hostile towards Geir around here? Even if his opinions/arguments are ridiculous, that's no reason IMO to insult him... and I've never read any post written by him that's even remotely rude. Am I missing something?

one boob is free with one (daavid), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:13 (fourteen years ago) link

*Why IS everyone

one boob is free with one (daavid), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:15 (fourteen years ago) link

His complete inability to recognise other posters as human beings with feelings, & his occasional tendancy to descend into quasi-racist sweeping statements that offend practically everyone here.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:23 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, I guess I've missed the racist statements. But what do you mean exactly by "recognising other posters as human beings"? I'm not questioning what you're saying, I'm just confused... isn't engaging in a discussion with other posters enough?

one boob is free with one (daavid), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:42 (fourteen years ago) link

"discussion".

But hey, a lot of it is good-natured-ish ribbing, really.

Music should never have changed anymore after my mid 80s (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:43 (fourteen years ago) link

people, including myself, are meaner on the internets.

but imagine, if you can, this real-life scenario. you're having a few beers with some friends, maybe some friends-of-friends as well, even a work colleague or two. you're talking about, i dunno, movies. you're debating the merits of robert mitchum versus robert ryan. this guy, who is someone's work colleague who nobody knows very well, keeps piping up: "black and white movies are not movies. only color movies are real movies." the first time you attempt to suppress your incredulity and mount an argument against this nonsensical claim. after which this guy responds, "black and white movies are not movies. only color movies are real movies." you and your bros chuckle uncomfortably. you go back to talking about how awesome robert mitchum is in "thunder road." a few minutes later, this guy pipes up again: "black and white movies are not movies. only color movies are real movies." everyone rolls their eyes, slowly and almost imperceptibly begins to move away from the guy. you resume talking about old movies. ten minutes later, the guy sidles up to you, real close like, and whispers in your ear, "black and white movies are not movies. only color movies are real movies."

now repeat x1000. oh, and add crypto-racist weirdness.

THAT is why people are, sometimes, mean to geir hongro.

Zeno, Thursday, 22 October 2009 08:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't get it. What is Geir supposed to be repeating x1000? I've never seen him being repetitious. Tendentious and sweeping, yes, but not repetitious.

I think another part of the reason why people are mean to Geir is that he's so passively good natured about it all, and godblessim for it.

I don't see it as being passively good natured at all

I'm inclined to believe that Geir states his opinions in the dogmatic tone he does simply out of irreverence - an understandable impulse given the sometimes somewhat over-bearing popist/rhythmico-fascist consensus that prevails on this board.

Freedom, Thursday, 22 October 2009 12:11 (fourteen years ago) link
