I liked this song a lot better when it was called "What the Hell" and it was by Avril Lavigne.

It has a dubstep-lite break in the middle.

Just watched the video for the first time. Song's okay, video's better. I'm not sure why there's breast-feeding, but it's pretty funny. When did old people start enlisting young people to keep up appearances? Neil Young/Pearl Jam...Aretha/George Michael...Neil Young/Devo--how far back does that go?

Nice! Sincerely wondering this in terms of pop music, though. I don't think any of the '50s guys--Elvis, Berry, etc.--ever actually engaged in this sort of thing, at least not on record, unless I'm forgetting something; they did get career boosts from things like Lennon's Rock and Roll Revival show. Mitigating factors aside, Frank and Nancy might be a good starting point.

Anyway, while Nicki Minaj doesn't need the visibility, I'm sure MIA gets more out of Madonna than vice versa.

clemenza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

oh man, i totally disagree with that
unless you mean how much she got paid

"bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

I meant something more like who's a bigger help to whom in terms of widening her current audience. Just guessing. I was probably thinking of my grade 6 class: 100% of them know who Nicki Minaj is, two-thirds know Madonna, and I'd be surprised if even half have heard of MIA. But that's a pretty narrow perspective, so you're probably right.

clemenza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

I see no way in which Madonna gets more out of an MIA guest appearance than MIA gets out of guesting on a Madonna single

dan are you seriously suggesting that the woman who won an oscar for best song in a movie and who rapped with kanye and jay at the grammys while she was pregnant is desperately in need for exposure?

Madonna hasn't had youth/critical culture impact since like the mid-nineties. Nicki and MIA have FOUR BARS apiece on this track. They are there as a sap to those two audiences; no one is gonna listen to that madge track and say, hey I should check this MIA chick out!

I think we can assume that both MIA and Madonna were happy to help each other, and found this collaboration to be mutually beneficial.

da croupier, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

apparently the remix of this track will feature LMFAO, let's debate who's winning there

da croupier, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

i hope we can all agree it's not the listening public

You are massively underselling/misunderstanding Madonna's position in pop music. The woman is a still-working pop legend; the appearance of both Nicki and MIA on this are pandering moves to current pop and indie dance audiences but the reason they both said yes* is because IT'S FUCKING MADONNA.

* though in fairness, Nicki would have said yes if it was Diamanda Galas; she seems to be addicted to guest spots

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

it's also noteworthy these ladies did not just sign up to rap for twenty seconds but walk behind madonna in cheerleader outfits shouting "L-U-V! MADONNA!"

Gimme All Your Luv has some similarities with Beautiful Stranger and Amazing from the Music album. If the album is kind of like that then I would get more excited it for it.

I do wonder why she is going back to her Bridget Bardot/Truth or Dare pale look though.

Tired of these edcuated basic bitches. (lilsoulbrother), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

no argument; the question was who gets "more" out of it and the idea that we're discussing exactly what "more" is in this context makes me feel like a moron so I'm happily conceding whatever your position is
