Kasabian vs. Keane roughly equates to Kidderminster Harriers vs. Kettering Town, in my book.

The sound of one mouth yawning.

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

"The sound of one youth morning" is actually a particularly apt way to describe Kasabian's music.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i caught a clip of them there on C4's coverage of the V festival. they were as dull as buggery, which surprised me, 'cos the last time i saw footage of them live they appeared to be rocking quite impressively.

still, the crowd appeared to be, as it were, going wild.

the dark, resigned apocalypse of a pulsating nightclub

Come again?

jimnaseum - formalist rigour! (jimnaseum), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

You know when a club night becomes so oppressive and decadent that it honestly does seem like the world is ending, as your senses blur amidst a haze of carnal oblivion?

That is evoked perfectly the sound of Kasabian, and it is their strongest selling-point. Like I said, all they needed was a decent songwriter and a bit of variation and they'd have written a decent first album.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

all they needed was a decent songwriter ... and they'd have written a decent first album.

if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I do like "Empire" a lot. I'd like it even more if it had Mark E Smith circa 1985 singing over the instrumental.

They're weak Sy ripoff crap. Annoyingly a guy I know and like at work likes them and hates Sy, which is fuckin dumb

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

To be fair they have got one good tune. It's "Just".

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:51 (seventeen years ago) link

some of the stuff on the kasabian self-titled is pretty, but it's an album that's 10 years too late

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't heard the record - but they have an excruciatingly boring live show, I'll say that much

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I can imagine. As I keep saying, the record stands out for its production alone, and in a live setting this is of course mostly removed.

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I really like the fuzz bass sound in their new single and hate myself for it.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i got the album yesterday. fucker took three goes to rip. i am genuinely looking forward to hearing it. mind you, i liked the last primal scream album too.

How have we gotten this far down the thread without mentioning PRIMAL SCREAM?

(oops, xxpost)

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 21 August 2006 11:27 (seventeen years ago) link

oh no, XTRMNTR's been mentioned a few times.

I guess if this kind of thing hadn't been done already by PRML SCRM, The Coral, The Beta Band, Lo-Fi Allstars, and a plethora of others throughout the late 90s then I'd think they were good. It's just frustrating that out of all the NME bunch of bands that are out there, they happen to be the most inventive (apart from maybe the Rakes who are just ridiculous in a funny way).

Wow, I've never heard them before, but Playlouder's review is fucking brutal:

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:22 (seventeen years ago) link

lol playlouder amirite?

seriously, jesus wept.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Playlouder's OTM percentage is disappointing, so I'd take what they say with a pinch of salt.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Generally, though not always, I agree with PL's reviews and I find their lack of pretension a little refreshing.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:29 (seventeen years ago) link

they can't write. that reviewer should have his fingers smashed.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

So that's playlouder is it? What a bunch of BLAH!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

that PL review is one of the worst pieces of writing i've seen in my entire life. good god.

the album, incidentally, is disappointing on a first listen. i've not heard it all the way through yet but it sounds depressingly like a case of all mouth and no trousers. i still love "empire" the song, but the rest of it sounds blustery and empty. still, i need more time with it before i can be sure.

(also, "glorious" by andreas johnson rules. but that's another discussion for another thread.)

"Kasabian are one such specimen that deserve no fornicatory action"

is, on second glance, one of the clumsiest sentences I've ever read.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:00 (seventeen years ago) link

fornicatory action

Something to do with ants or anthills, amirite?

dud'Hab'c'Deva To You (With ReGard) (Dada), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

that would be formicatory. the review succeeds in making my skin crawl even without the use of ants, however.

Kasabian have never done anything approaching the boisterous fun of "Super Scooper & Mighty Scoop".

I fucking hate Kasabian, and like that PL review, just cos it hates them too.

i was going to say "i really don't get all the kasabian hate round here", but to be honest i, umm, do. they really are a bunch of fannies, aren't they? the press release that comes with the album is SICKENING.

but "empire", the song, rocks bells, and that is my considered opinion.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

"I'm a Chris Morris fan"

Regardless of what the rest of the article says, I am in total agreement with it. :-D

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and one thing that DOES get me about Kasabian is that so many reviewers chant the same carbon-copy bullsh about the album displaying 'what balls Kasabian have'. What a load of, more like. Their song structures and writing skills are not only severely limited but utterly cowardly into the bargain. Bands with real balls (this being Nick I shall bait his answer with Talk Talk) are dismissed by such cruddy reviewers as being 'wimpish' and 'pretentious', whereas to write a slightly dance-inflected 3-minute dollop of crud is suddenly the most daring thing a band can do in 2004. Heavens.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Grimly, could you copy the PR into here please? I'd love a read.

i've only got a paper copy, and typing it in would make me vomit. i might share some of the choicer phrases; i'll see if my estimable colleague has an electronic version.

i could get it scanned, i suppose. hmm.

I had a dream last night that my friend's mom was showing me a notebook she'd filled wihth doodles and jokes. One of the jokes was labled "SLAYER vs. Kasabian:" and next to that it was simply repeated as "SLAYER vs. Kasyaaaawn----" and after the "yawn" her handwriting trailed off into a squiggly line as though she had fallen asleep.

naming bands after disgusting hippy dullards who were gullible enough to be brainwashed by a horrible little white supremacist midget is not cool imo. It's probably Tarantino's fault this is still happening.
