please tell me he's at least sounding more like rustie than squarepusher these days

i could not get into pattern-grid world at all
this album is quite alright. I don't really remember anything about his other albums other than I enjoyed them at the time so I can't really compare them. I suspect that will be my response to this one a couple years down the road.

Is Rustie the dude who had Seinfeld theme-style slap bass on his album?

mh is correct. "Hover Traps" is the slap bass track

this record is so damn good. it sounds beautiful too, maybe his most hi-fi? or maybe it's just that there aren't as many layers so each sound speaks better.

i haven't felt like listening to his records in months, so i'm really happy to want to listen to this on repeat.

Really anxious to hear this, holding out until I can pick it up next week. I've really loved p much everything he's done. Most excited for the track with Erykah, but I'm afraid I may be building my expectations up too high.

this is pretty chill, loose
― j., Monday, 1 October 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link
I don't like this anywhere near as much as Cosmogramma, which had that whole enormous swirl feel to it even when it felt pretty loose and unstructured. This one feels more straightforward and somehow duller at the same time and I still don't feel like it's really going anywhere.
I wish he'd indulge his soundtracky tendencies more and his jazz influences less often. This one feels really murky.

but richard-san gave it an 8.5 in pfork
― the late great, Monday, 1 October 2012 08:52 (eleven years ago) link
it's funny that i'm the first response in this thread talking about his "a milli" remix. i'm not sure i listened to more than three tracks by him since then but when i saw him at pfork fest this summer he dropped the "a milli" remix like 5 minutes into his set.

CoD is undetermined but someone in Allan Holdsworth's band mentioned accidental OD in a now-deleted online post.
Wasn't sure to post this here or in the Dogtown & Z-Boys thread. :-\

really sad about this, so much lost potential. he's really the secret weapon on UtQC, credited on almost every track.
this full set by his jazz band has some really nice moments:https://soundcloud.com/alphapup/austin-peralta-live-at-futura

Had not heard "FLOTUS" until today. Really amazing track.
As far as his albums go, while Cosmogramma and UtQC are good, and his sound is certainly evolving, I don't think that either follow-up is as good as his debut. Los Angeles is still my fav.

― festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 18 September 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link
i don't really like erykah badu ... i guess maybe i don't have enough appreciation for r&b?
― the late great, Thursday, 18 September 2014 17:02 (nine years ago) link
r&b wasn't the first thing i thought though - i was more reminded of early/mid-00s broken beat
― the late great, Thursday, 18 September 2014 17:05 (nine years ago) link
huh. you mean like Cinematic Orchestra 'Every Day'? 'cause that came to mind, but just because they're referencing the same '70s spiritual jazz vibe.
the flylo track though, except for the drums it sounds like it could actually be a lost, idk, Norman Connors record or something.
― festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 18 September 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link
no i mean something different ... but what i'm thinking of, now that i think of it, was never quite as downtempo as flying lotus, or at least nothing comes to mind immediately
i understand what you're saying about the influences but to me it sounds really lightweight
