w-w-wait I'm PRO-v.i.p. humiliation. unless it's totally harmless and "just entertainment".

''w-w-wait I'm PRO-v.i.p. humiliation.

so am I.

''Julio how can it be just a bit of fun and also terrorizing?''

It was fun for the audience because the corrs were terrorized and humiliated.

''unless it's totally harmless and "just entertainment".''

Ultinately it was harmless. HA HA tarcer are you saying that it would have been bettah if Iggy and andrea FITE! (actaully i'd rather they mud wrestle). or are you just trying to screw w/ my head.

JUlio Desouza, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess what I'm saying Julio is that everyone's been focusing on this poor spat-upon woman when it sounds like Iggy was doing other equally bad things - publicly calling them out, knocking over their drinks, literally driving them from their seats. If this all adds up to "entertainment" for you, fine, but to me it sounds like something else - impulse vs. manners, for instance, or rage vs. complacence, or ugly vs. pretty - that seems more complex and maybe more meaningful than the word "fun" can contain. mark s is OTM - Iggy's greatest trick is the annihilation of pomposity through self-abasement - maybe he twigged that they were so lobotomized no amount of goading would provoke their inner freak-demon

''If this all adds up to "entertainment" for you, fine, but to me it sounds like something else - impulse vs. manners, for instance, or rage vs. complacence, or ugly vs. pretty - that seems more complex and maybe more meaningful than the word "fun" can contain.''

to me it really is entertaining. I don't know how you could read this much into the situation. maybe you could clarify? (it's OK if you don't).

''maybe he twigged that they were so lobotomized no amount of goading would provoke their inner freak-demon''

from the account given. First he spat at one of them at the end of one song. They didn't move and so Iggy started calling them out in the middle of the next one. Lobotomy indeed!

in 1970 he was playing to a far more 'dangerous' crowd. If he had spat at them he would've got it. nowdays he's a part of the world of entertainment and so he gets VIPs (and no confrontation).

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Julio I can be massively entertained by utterly un-"fun" events or performances (i.e. nasty or technically awful or severely depressing) - calling it "fun" underplays and simplifies what it sounds like Iggy did.

Bit late in here, but what the hell, an interesting read, this thread. This is a certified DrunkPost, btw.

a) Idespair (good name, but not as good as your first alleged mail address): I did not say "girls must be treated special". Spitting on people is contemptible, regardless of the sex of the person being spat on.
But you did connect the spitting -- and the cheering of the same -- with sexism, in the punch going "You sad, inadequate, sexist assholes, which, as far as I can see, had no other foundation than that it was a woman who was spat on by a man.

b) Idespair: The references to the Corr women are riddled with sexism.
As far as I can see, they are not. You clearly see things different. Could you enlighten me how the original post is "riddled with sexism"? Honestly, I'm baffled

c) Spitting on people is neither big or clever, I agree, but neither is textual analysis.

d) Just realised idespair has probably err-Left The Building-uh!, and since I didn't find the following Julio-Tracer exchange very interesting, I'll just say

e) Tracer: I don't know who the Corrs are
Dave225: I've never heard it
ILILM.

f) Sundar: sundar, who likes that big poppy Corrs single more than anything I've heard by Iggy Pop in a while
ILLLLLLILM.

The Corrs are NOT INNOCENT and they SUCK as an example of feminism. Have you seen the video for their song where they take the piss out of Destiny's child as if they're BETTER, as if DC are FUNNY, as if hip hop hos are hilarious ... though i do love the corrs for being so straight ... i love them for being so christian but that's what you want if you're a christian, to be spat upon so that you know that you're standing up for what you believe in. if iggy didn't spit on them, what would they have to endure? what use would their years of warm parenting be? i'm tempted to say that iggy's a better example to girls, though i can't justify it. i guess he's a better example to girls because he's such an object. he totally degrades himself in a way that few men will - in a way that lots of women, will, though ... he's the type of guy who would have been threatened loads of times for acting 'gay.' if anyone deserves to spit on someone, surely it's him.

maryann, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Now, if he'd just raise up and go after that stockbroking asshole Bowie. Can he spit THAT far (I'd be happy if he'd just graze Mark McEwan while trying)? Is there any reason why HEATHEN has an over-$20- list price?

I can't speak for Iggy (I haven't heard anything he's done since "Candy") but Sundar is right about "Breathless" - what a fabulous song. If only all The Corrs' stuff was like that (AKA if only more bands and artists were replicating Shania Twain's best singles).

Tim, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

so fucking what if they made 1 good song, or 10 good songs or 10000 good songs, it's still good that someone spat at them.

unknown or illegal user, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the Corrs are rubbish (even "Breathless", sorry). I think spitting in peoples hair is disgusting and rubbish. I think anonymised self-righteousness on message boards is rubbish. I've not heard of BP Fallon but he sounds rubbish too.

Tom, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

BP Fallon - worked for the Beatles for ten minutes. Was some kind of hanger on for Led Zeppelin and made to look like a fool in "Hammer of the Gods". Has essentially been living on these two things ever since.

Tom, you remember liking Toasted Heretic's "Galway & Los Angeles"? BP is namechecked in the lyrics.

I was working as stage security that night. Iggy was on fire, he did indeed gob at the Corrs. As far as I'm concerned it was a really great thing to do.

The Corrs are a shame to Ireland since they performed at the Queen's 50th Jubilee Celebration.

I'd be disappointed if I went to an Iggy Pop concert and didn't get spat upon. It's like attending a Pogues show sober.

Considering the Corrs were just there as fans, Iggy's irrational hate of them is pretty idiotic.

David Allen, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Belated congratulations to Iggy. I'd spit in sympathy only my mouth is full of beer and I'd hate to waste it. This incident puts me in mind of some of the great spitting controversies of the past. I think my favourite has to be the rijkard/voller incident. If memory serves, rijkard took offense at herr voller's outrageously bad haircut and promptly launched a ball of fiery spit in his general direction. He was promptly sent off. As he walked off the pitch, Jimmy/Barry/John Hill/Davies/Motson assured us that the end of western civilization was near. Several world cups later, and here we still are. Hale, hearty and ready to march on Baghdad. Hurrah!

How could you tell things like that ? You're silly guys ! Do you think that's a way to treat people and do you really like music as you pretend ? I doubt ! I'm a 27 years old french fan of the Corrs and I'm proud of it !!! they're a very respectable family, not your case certainly... Also, I listen a lot of rock, metal (lyric metal and doom/gothic principally), classical and celtic music, so I can't understand this total childishness ! It's distressing and really stupid !!!

"Well, maybe it's because the pampered tosspots were sat like royalty observing the peasantry at play and were only there because their PR ppl thought they needed to be "seen" at an Iggy show that the old fecker got so rankled."

Or, could it be they were there because they happen to like (although I don't understand how anyone could) his music? Heavens no! No, they came because their popularity is dropping, and going to an Iggy Pop concert is going to help them get "hot" again. So you're saying if you go to one of the fucker's concerts, you're suddenly immensely popular? When did he get crowned king of the world!? ... No wait, on second thought, where can I get tickets!?

The Corrs should have sued him. Caroline is pregnant for God's sake!

And yes, I'm a big Corrs fan, and proud of it. So go on and leave me breathless with all your childish, idiotic comments now.

Kenne, Monday, 6 January 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

If the Corrs were surprised by Iggy's actions, they clearly weren't very well versed in the man's oeuvre. They got what they deserved.

What did they do to deserve that? Just because they went to one of his shows they deserved to be spat at?! Anyone who believes it's normal to spit at people for absolutely no reason other then hating them, is insane.

Kenne, Monday, 6 January 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh btw, this should be interesting for you people: Iggy admitted he acted like a lunatic.

Quote from an interview with Andrea from December 4th:
Didn't you get abuse from Iggy Pop at one of his gigs?
Unfortunately, that's true. We have the same tour manager and we were in a box and I didn't want to make a spectacle of myself by dancing all night. The last thing you want is for the audience to be distracted by someone from another band being there. It's a respect thing. He got quite frightening, swearing at us and trying to throw things at us from the stage.

So you'll be buying no more Iggy albums?
No. It frightened me; I was sitting beside my pregnant sister. It was looking very scary - he has apologised but I think he was out of order. It wasn't because it was us; he would have done the same to anyone up there and I find that behaviour disgusting.
Venga, Monday, 6 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

What a sad lot of people you are.

You find that entertaining?

Even if you weren't a fan of the Corrs, wouldn't common decency indicate that not only do you not spit at people, you do not terrorise a pregnant woman? Hell! She could have miscarried or anything!

And it should go for everyone, not just because OMG, Iggy Pop is such a maniac and people should expect those kinds of things.

NO ONE should have to be treated like that, whether they're at an Iggy Pop concert or a S Club 7 concert. No one has the right to act like that.

And you ask why Jim Corr didn't retaliate? He may be protective of his sisters, but he's certainly not stupid. Anything that he did, he would probably have been set upon by people such as yourselves.

Drumchik, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

wouldn't common decency indicate that not only do you not spit at people, you do not terrorise a pregnant woman?
But what if it had been a GWAR show? If you're a pregnant woman and you feel you MUST see Iggy Pop, you best watch Iggy Pop on TV.

Hell! She could have miscarried or anything!
Spit has been known to have that effect. Second hand smoke at a concert, however, is fine. (I dunno - is there smoking at shows over there?)

If they had spit back at him (real lugey-like) and shouted "I got a right!" he would have laughed... next time they'll know.

This is the dumbest thread of all time. Iggy acted like a lunatic because Iggy acts like a lunatic. That's his fucking job! He's made a thirty-year career out of acting like a lunatic. As Mark S noted way upthread, in 1970 Iggy would have got the audience to spit at him, rather than the other way 'round.

The right answer:
If they had spit back at him (real lugey-like) and shouted "I got a right!" he would have laughed... next time they'll know.

five years pass...

A decade later:

- The Dundalk "Fab Four" have become more famous for their everlasting career hiatus, than their poor, pissant "oeuvre", achieving
solely one goal: making Coldplay and Dolores O'Riordan sound like fuckin' Beethoven in comparison...

- Andrea still hasn't realized she sounds like a cat in agony, nevertheless she decides to put out not ONE, but TWO solo albums...

- Apparently too busy to save Obama, Bono didn't bother enlighting her as to the fact she still posesses the writing "auteur"
skills of a mentally challenged kid in last-stage leukemia.

- Undeterred in her grandiose endeavours, she painfully achieved the sale of merely two dozen copies of her first solo masterpeice
to her siblings' kids, which helped scoring a number #8 on the Philippines charts, due to the sheer number of the ever-expanding offspring that only Brangelina &Ben Affleck/Jennifer Garner can rival.

- With the looks of a junkie that could frighten Nicholson&Keith Richards in their prime coke roller-coaster days, she may eventually be coming to the conclusion that the Corrs beauty canon has always appealed solely to gay&senior audiences.
Thus she applied for a rock-solid life insurance by marrying a billionaire, while she struggles to reach 10000 followers on Twitter.

- Finally, Andrea says she's afraid of celebrity lifestyle. Her fucktard brother scares me way more.

- Sharon Corr, in a stroke of genius, puts out a solo album, too, apparently without Bono&Brian Eno's artistic endorsment, then
angrily blames the poor sales on the fiercy pirates who downloaded it for free, while struggling to learn how to turn a computer
on...her husband would gladly help, but couldn't, since he's too busy downloading on his own. Some serious porn. Sharon admits to smoking like a camel. Hubby actually realises she is one.

- The major failing of this second solo endeavor by a Corr is to be blamed on the Jewish-American-Masonic-Alien conspiracy, led by W. Bush&Winny the Pooh, who turned to be a major pedobear, says brother Jim (he has proof of all facts, since he dug out the secret archives of the World in the ruins ot the World Trade Center), in order to prevent camel sis to gain more followers than him&Andrea combined, on Twitter.

- Last but not least, the Corr-"Man" admits turning Goebbels by jerking way too much when spying on his sisters in the bathroom, thus having the idea behind the corporate incest ad that morphed into The Corrs.

- Two years from now, drummer Caroline either gives birth to 5 more kids, or reveals the truth of being a shemale. Like her sisters.

The Corrs, a band that will endure the test of time...
