Classick w/o a doubt. Yes lp @ 45rpm = Rush. Spacemen 3's "An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music" (or whatever it ws called) Sounded great @ thee wrong speed. A bunch of Richard Wahnfried rekkids (Klaus Schultze music thing) sounded good played wrong as well. On of them actually had no speed lited on label or sleeve IIRC. I do miss this aspect of vinyl.

And Killing Joke's "Eighties" sounds like Nirvana when you slow it down!

i thought jaz coleman of killing joke settled out of court with geffen/nirvana over this very idea that "smells .." was some sort of rip off of "eighties" and that this provided coleman with funds to set up in nz and make orchestral rock versions of split enz etc ..

is this correct ?

doing this stuff with mp3s is like using porno DVDs - get a wax record and some other outmoded music hardware and fuck with stuff. Lee Ranaldo's From Here To Infinity is listed as being "Vari-speed".

I like Slint's S/T 10" on 45. I found out later I'd been playing it at the wrong speed, but I didn't care. It sounds so much better sped up.

Me and my cousin had hours of fun running this CD full of cheesy "Music Samples" disks ($4.99 from Beast Buy) through GoldWave. The best was taking these hopelessly lame loops of "pop metal" riffs and slowing them down till they sounded by Michael Gira underwater.

the only time i did this was by mistake - madness b-side - walking with mr wheeze .. an instrumental with large honking sax line. slowed to 33 it becomes massive and a lot darker. i now cant hear the track at normal speed as its so much better at the incorrect speed.

on john oswald's plunderphonics, which isn't as good as it could be, there's one cut that is actually beautiful. it's dolly parton singing "the great pretender" and it starts out almost mickey mouse fast and gradually slows down past natural speed deep into screwed territory...

When I was in high school my friends and I were tripping on acid, sitting in a basement listening to records. Someone put on Slayer "haunting the chapel" 12" EP without switching to 45 rpm; "captor of sin" sounded amazing, really crushing and slow.

Childhood Dansette discoveries:

1. Pinky & Perky slowed from 45 to 33 = two women, pitched just right. Like discovering that there is no Santa.

2. The Goons "Ying Tong Song" slowed 45 to 16 = Milligan/Sellers/Secombe, in their normal voices, again pitched just right, singing v-e-r-y slowly & carefully & deliberately. Much funnier than the original. (Which wasn't. At all.)

Conclusion: pitch-changing technology in 50s & 60s still in its infancy.

I bought a Solvent record a few years back, recorded it onto CD at 33/13, loved it, then literally a year later heard it somewhere else and realized it was mastered for 45. Still like it better at 33.

This is very indie but the b-side of Novak's Rapunzel 7" (which was no.6 in festive 50 in 1997 so yes) was called Almost Chinook and i played both the a-side and b-side at 45rpm for two years and found them both very ace and superb and then two years later Novak released a single called Blue Chinook and I bought it and played it and it sounded identical to the previous b-side and I went back to the prev record and investigated and although Rapunzal was 45rpm Almost Chinook was in fact 33rpm! which made a lot more sense, it was just a slower version of the new single you see? Crazy Times!

Also I played the last Go! Team single at the wrong speed for a week before I realised.

I remember when Patti Schmidt, on late-night show "Brave New Waves" here in Canadia, played this amazing, loping remix by UNKLE of "Djed" by Tortoise. This was about ten years ago, when I was a spunky teenager who taped late-night radio, do I listened to it tons after broadcast. A few years later, I see the remix 12" in a cutout bin, buy it, and throw it on, only to clue in to the fact that a) she played a 45 on 33, and b) it didn't sound nearly as hot at the proper speed (although by that point, I got the in-joke of James Lavelle throwing in the Steve Reich nod "Come out to show 'dem..." mid-song).

The best thing about my Sony MiniDisc deck is the pitch control. You can turn the switch and slow things down to a barely crawling drone (you can do it slightly slow too; lots of options! Only double speed the other direction, though.) I use this feature more than I probably should!

I know there are some CD decks out there with pitch control also, but they seem to be a rare breed. I wouldn't mind having one, though. In fact, the next time I have to buy a CD player, I'm making sure that it has that feature. (I've seen some Marantz and maybe Denon decks that did this. Not sure if they still make them that way.)

Banarama's "Cruel Summer" 45 rpm played at 33 1/3 really captures the oppressive feeling of 40+ degree celsius summers.

My brother collects classic Victorolas, and he left one at my mum's house several years ago. When initially cranked up, it would play very fast and then slow down. Since I didn't have any classic platters to play on it, I used this old Shriekback "Nemesis" 12" I bought for 25 cents. The playback was marvelous! Unfortunately, the heavy, blunt stylus fucked up the record. Oh well, it was only 25 cents.
