ced gee made him sound immortal.

Come on, Lolpez, the way his voice cracks on "dumb motherfuckers" alone is enough to make him classic. In terms of emotional investment, he makes even Chuck D sound like he's holding back.

I'm also proud to say I own a 12-inch of "Fuck Compton" with an entirely white label except for the Ruffhouse logo and the words "TIM DOG."

I'd never heard "Fuck Compton" until now. ...WAU

Timi Yuro, he does sound like a beast, but some of those rhymes are laughable. Rhyming "shit" with "shit" just seemed lazy. I bought the album and saw him live back in 93 (and I'm from LA). I just don't think he had the chops to match his voice. Also, the homothug shit on Wild in the Penile is pretty WTF.

On the one song where he talks about having sexual fantasies about the girls in EnVogue, the line that kills me every time is "The one with the fat ass / Heh, they ALL got a fat ass"

One of my very favorite moments in hip-hop and the above is dead on. I hear tears in it too which, of course, he wipes away by the next line.

aw shit. was just listening to him yesterday.
one of the greatest rappers. the lyrics didn't take anything away from his performance. i mean, yeah, if he had spent more time on them then maybe he'd be up there with big l and biggie. but it doesn't matter. he was what he was and he didn't give a fuck.

But what about rappers who weren’t skilled, but immensely entertaining? Twenty years later, “personality rap” pays the bills and that term usually applies to the majority of likable rappers that can’t really rap worth a shit (insert just about any current acclaimed rapper here). Tim Dog got points for being both bold and the poster child for Mayor David Dinkins-era NYC – an NYC overrun with robberies, racially-charged fights, and hair-trigger violence – but most people back then said the same thing with regard to his skill level: “Yeah, but he can’t rap.”
this totally made me think of the recent Chief Keef thread lol
