Bands that people drool over, who you think are crap...
I don't see what the fuss is about - and I have quite a wide eclectic taste in music - with:

Pink Floyd
Depeche Mode
Bob Dylan
Radiohead

With the exception of a couple of songs each (except Radiohead - which is all just a depressing durge), I just don't get why people go nuts over them...

So - who do you find crap when everyone else seems to hero-worship...?

72 Premier League - Its very overrated and the England national team is also overrated. Due to the media. The premier league is falling out of touch. The majority of top players around the world play in Spain or Italy and English teams performed extremely poorly in the cl. Man united are also relying on both Giggs and Scholes who are practically ancient.

either way I always feel like BoC's music creeps me out like 20% as much as they want it to, "Color of the Fire" excepted. which is ultimately why I feel they're massively overrated.

73 For me, the most pretentious, overrated band of all time is REM. God, they're dull and Stipe is almost as big a pretentious, overblown tit as Bono.

74 I got some Ramones stuff and I listened to it a good bit and I just did not like it AT ALL. Seems fairly rubbish, tbh.

Which brings me to something else that SERIOUSLY gets on my tits...

People who know nothing about music wearing t-shirts of rock bands.

75 Nirvana

Probably the most overrated band of all time. Kurt Cobain couldn't play guitar, nor could he sing, and could barely write.

His skill at guitar was so pathetic and limited that he was only able to play power chords and his guitar solos consisted of only two strings as a maximum. As a vocalist, he had a scratchy voice with a one-octave range. His vocal range was so horrible that he wasn't even able to hit the high notes when he covered the Meat Puppets' song "Lake of Fire". He often ripped off other bands (Killing Joke, The Breeders, The Pixies, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Butthole Surfers etc.) and based his sound on their own. He even went as far as to steal a riff from Killing Joke's "Eighties"; changed it up a bit, and then used it for his own song "Come As You Are".

He was also an awful lyricist and most of his music consisted of simple wordplay that had no real meaning.

For example, let's take a look at a verse from "All Apologies":

"I wish I was like you. Easily amused. Find my nest of salt. Everything's my fault. I'll take all the blame. Aqua-seafoam shame."

And honestly, that has got to be some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard ...

*Le Gasp* You are bold! But I shall tell.

To put it broadly, I'll try any genre at least once, but of course, I like some genres more than others. In the gothic spectrum, what drew me to the music of the subculture wasn't classic gothic rock, like I stated above. It just didn't seem too mysterious to my taste. I was drawn into the gothic subculture mainly by the influences from the Victorian Period: the dark events that took place, the risque forms of entertainment, the mysterious forms of entertainment that took place in parlor rooms. Not only the Victorian Period, but also the Reneissance as well: I loved the whole atmosphere that one would feel in a gothic cathedral, or happy minstrels and gypsies entertaining in the town square. I wanted to listen to music that reminded me of these settings, and I found it in ethereal wave, "gothic" classical music, medieval folk, dark cabaret, new age with gregorian chants, and neo-classical, symphonic, and gothic metal. So, I'm in more of a gothic mindset when I listen to these genres.

But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy all gothic rock. I love Rhea's Obsession and Faith and the Muse, and I do like some songs by The Cure. I think the closet spectrum of gothic rock I listen to would be pagan rock, which somewhat overlaps gothic rock and medieval rock elements (because I noticed that a lot of pagan rock groups are also considered gothic rock and/or medieval rock, like Qntal and Inkubus Sukkubus, but I guess this topic is debatable too).

This was totally off-topic. http://www.goth.net/forums/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Hmmm..... Nick cave.

I respect him, but he's kind of an artist I like select songs by, but can't really sit through an entire album of his.

I still like "The weeping Song", but I think Blixa Bargeld really makes that song....

Yeah, I just can't understand why people would just like everything that happens to fall into their chosen genre.
There should be something that ATTRACTS them to that genre in the first place.
I consider myself a full-time goth, yet most of the music I listen to nowadays would be dark ambient, martial industrial, black ambient, darkwave, neofolk, early industrial, and experimental music.

What attracted me to gothic music was not it's punk/new wave relevance, nor it's place in rock n roll history, but it's darkness and atmosphere.
What I love about classic goth bands especially was the importance of deep, brooding basslines under eerie wailing guitar effects.
Many newer goth bands tend to forget the importance of bass.

Yet, there's definitely times I would choose Laibach or Lustmord over Joy Division or the Sisters.

"Give it to me DARK!!!" says I.

The Sisters Of Mercy.

There, I said it.

I mean, they are good, but not deserving the maniacal praise they attract.

I find myself pretty disconnected from the modern Goth scene to be honest, so I guess you could say I think the majority of modern goth bands (by which I mean whats played in the clubs) are over rated.
There are of course exceptions, but it's true of the majority. Maybe I'm just not "down with the kids" anymore :p

Music

INCREDIBLY overrated. People are so caught up in the music scene that they forget that there's more to life. A simple book can get you out of reality. People obsess about originality and being unique and individual... but they always limit it to the music scene. Society cannot think outside of music. Music is conformity itself, believe it or not. We have people thinking that they are rebelling by LISTENING to metal. People thinking that if they LISTEN to underground bands, they are different. They limit originality to what they LISTEN to.
15 year old boy: I'm tired of being a tool of society, I think I'll go rebel by LISTENING to black metal.

Person1: Oh, she listens to Good Charlotte, she must be a teenie.
Person2: He's gangster, he listens to rap.
Person3: He's so punk with his mohawk and his Sex Pistols tee.
Person4: Ew, you listen to Beyonce? Don't talk to me.

Notice how I emphasize the word LISTEN. Only because people judge others depending on what they listen to. Music went from something beautiful to something society uses as a tool to stereotype people/bring people down/judge people.

Music is the route of stereotypes.
Music is destroyed by society.
Music is overrated.

No, you've been labeled a troll for being a twat - by me in fact. The only person who can claim to be 'God' around here is me, and I'm both not that egomeniacal and not a moron who thinks that kind of thing is 'cool' when it's just lame. But then, I've stopped being (and stopped acting like) and angsty teen for a long time now.

You're lucky you just got the label, initially I was just going to deactivate your account outright, but then I saw you started to actually post things relevant to the topics you were posting in. If you keep it up, I'll remove the label again.

Sorry, I call em as I see em http://www.goth.net/forums/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

As for getting on topic - last time I was in clubs (granted it's been years know, ahh, kids ... ;P) I found a lot of basically techno music being played and trying to pass itself off as goth. WAY overrated and definitely not goth. But maybe I'm old school for thinking that music, any music, should have an actual artist involved somewhere, not just a completely computer generated track.

Just turned the telly on and saw a bit of Yes and it reminded me how I always thought that, , even back in the 70's, there was a lot of well orchestrated noise and not much substance in their music. Or was it just a platform for S.H. to irrrrrrrrrrrrritate everyone on the planet with his "pleaseforgivemeifiamgoingtoboreyouforhalfanhourwithoneofmineilostthewilltolivesolos". Am I alone? Are there any others?

84. The Rolling Stones. To me they are no more than just overrated jerks who write melodically dead emotionally dry music. The most overrated band I know of, actually. The Rolling Stones receive way too much praise and credit for everything from influence to the quality of their hooks. I'd give them a one at best. That said, there are a bunch of Stones songs that I do like (even a couple that I love) and I can easily say Beggar's Banquet is a really good album, but for the most part they really leave me cold. Sorry, this is just how I feel.
