As goofy and terrible as he is, I can't help sympathizing with Biebs here. He deserves his own lil' personal freak out.

awww, cute!

(but I wonder if the abortion line is a subtle dig at Justin's pro-life-ish mom and Justin's own comments on the issue)

Darnielle is quite outspoken on women's reproductive rights, and used to work in the health care. So, maybe a subtle dig, but more likely just an issue at the forefront of his mind.

In fairness when I initially looked at the Anne Frank House FB page it wasn't actually on the page, unless there was a linked picture of Bieber somewhere I didn't notice, and that screengrab looks mocked up as hell. It still feels made up, like something out of a deliberate parody.

"Great girl" is probably worse than "belieber".

Matt DC, Sunday, 14 April 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

Anne Frank, cracking bunch of lads.

Matt DC, Sunday, 14 April 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

bieber likes to keep things casual that's just his style

Pat Finn, Sunday, 14 April 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah, i agree with you his statement about anne frank was pretty weird/borderline offensive

Pat Finn, Sunday, 14 April 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

However, there is a simple explanation for the comment, a source tells PEOPLE.

"Justin took the time to visit the museum after reading Anne Frank's diaries – he wanted to follow-up by visiting her house. Someone told Justin during the tour that Anne was very into pop culture and probably would've been a fan of Justin," the source says.

"It's sad that people are so quick to criticize without understanding the context with which he made those comments."

That explanation doesn't make it sound any less like Justin Bieber lives in his own reality with himself at the center.

I don't normally open up this thread, so I didn't hear on the radio until this morning what this is all about. I'm completely fine with what he said. Above and beyond the fact that he was, in his own clumsy and egocentric way, trying to say something nice, I sometimes think kids forget that Anne Frank--or MLK, or, in my own country, Terry Fox--were actually real people. They're presented with this deified, remote textbook figure from the time they enter school, and after a while, I get the feeling--as a teacher, from first-hand observation--they just tune out anything further you have to say. Suggesting that Anne Frank, in another context, might have had feelings similar to other teenage girls does not seem like the worst thing in the world to me. (I'll cut him some slack and assume he meant in another context--not that in the middle of her actual horrors she would have found time for Justin Bieber.)

clemenza, Monday, 15 April 2013 11:32 (eleven years ago) link

A friend of Ann Powers noted this more specifically in re: Frank, pop culture and being a 'real' person:

I am sure that this is not what Beiber had in mind, but it is true that Anne Frank did keep up with Hollywood fan and gossip magazines and particularly liked Deanna Durbin, who was, arguably, even more manufactured than Justin Beiber (whatever you think of either of them). Both Durbin and Beiber were/are heavily promoted teen "singers"; both were popular among younger kids because of their anodyne, nonthreatening good looks (Durbin was engineered by the studio as the "wholesome, attractive" opposition to Judy Garland's actual talent but somewhat swarthy appearance). It's not flattering for Beiber, but it also means that he might not be totally wrong.
