ok question - if i am going to suggest this as ilx unity fap event, does anyone care if it's fri or sat? is there a compelling reason to go one night over the other, j?
― and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link
I can do Sat but not Fri.
― your fretless ways (Eazy), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago) link
the only difference is that the fri show is 9 - 1 and the sat show is 8 - 12. because of that, i feel like friday is a hotter show and better attended, and saturday is a little more chill?
― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:49 (eleven years ago) link
I could make the mid-1 hour on Friday if that's what happens. Otherwise, chillwave brass band.
― your fretless ways (Eazy), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:56 (eleven years ago) link
Ok good because I was thinking FRIDAY

The Bats are playing schubas in a few weeks, which is kind of exciting?
Also, Juliana Barwick is bound to be awesome. Have you seen this, straight out of Connecticut, the best state: http://vimeo.com/58489792

― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 20 May 2013 21:15 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, I think I'm gonna go! and probably S too, since it is on during her break.
I don't think I've heard a bats song released after 1987, so maybe I should get on that.

based on the large # of ppl standing outside of union park/cobra lounge this weekend who were basically throwing postcard flyers for riotfest at people and shouting REPLACEMENTS! i don't have very high hopes either. but who knows.

Anyone going to Destroyer (solo) + Azita at Old Town School next week? I'm seeing Charli XCX the night before, but man, Bejar in a setting like that could be fantastic.
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Friday, 1 November 2013 14:59 (ten years ago) link
Oh wait, maybe it's sold out? Old Town site says, "No seats currently available. Please check back later." :/
― Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Friday, 1 November 2013 15:00 (ten years ago) link
Old Town is bad about putting sellout notices on their site proper, I've had the same thing where it doesn't show up as sold out until I actually go to buy a ticket.
I put this on the Chicago thread but Bottomless Pit (ex-Silkworm) is doing a free in-store at Saki on Sunday that I'll be attending. There are DJs and food too I think.

does anyone know if shows at the burlington are routinely extremely late to start or did i go on a bad night?
also there's another one of those weird red bull things at the EB -- this time it's Nazoranai + Oozing Wound 5/20, $3 with rsvp, should be awesome
i don't know why i bothered starting this thread but hey here it is and i'm trying to plan ahead
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Monday, 21 April 2014 13:35 (ten years ago) link
burlington shows ime start on time, but somehow I always ended up going on like thursday nights so maybe they run a tighter ship on school nights to keep the neighbors happy?
― dan m, Monday, 21 April 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link
So an unexplained 90 min delay is abnormal? I'm still grouchy about Friday.
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Monday, 21 April 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link
ugh yeah never experienced anything like that there
― dan m, Monday, 21 April 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link
ok then it must have been a bad nighti bailed!
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Monday, 21 April 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link
are there still clubs in/around chicago where they book soul-blues acts and play to a largely over-40 black crowd?
― espring (amateurist), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 05:46 (ten years ago) link
i should have asked that question 30 years ago, really.
I remember being blown away when I first moved to Chicago at how punctual the shows were. Shows in Richmond would routinely start an hour or two late. It sucked.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:35 (ten years ago) link
I think it's nice that there's a predictability to it -- you can trust start times, generally, almost regardless of venue (but I don't really go to like ~underground warehouse venues~ or whatever, mostly established venues where i have gone alone and not felt weird). also i think it's respectful toward musicians, who also deserve predictable working conditions.
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:30 (ten years ago) link
I was kind of weirded out when I visited how punctual a show at the Metro was! I almost missed all the openers.
― a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link
you learn that lesson 1x or at the most 1x at each new venuei asked about the burlington bc i had never been there and i was bored to death for 90 minutes while i waited for the 3 bands to start and then i got mad bc i went with the understanding that things start at/around (within 20-30 min) of the advertised start timethen i left and didn't see the bands i arrived on time to see (i got there at 9, maybe a few min after)
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:44 (ten years ago) link
LL, I wish I lived in Chicago -- you would never lack for somebody willing to go to live shows with you.
― Alvarius B. Goode (WilliamC), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:47 (ten years ago) link
i don't mind going alone 95% of the time and people do go with me occasionallyit's not bad unless i just sit there doodling on my grocery list for 90 min waiting for anything to happen
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 16:00 (ten years ago) link
but thank you! there is no shortage of shows to see around here, that's for sure.
for example also there's another one of those weird red bull things at the EB -- this time it's Nazoranai + Oozing Wound 5/20, $3 with rsvp, should be awesome
― Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 16:02 (ten years ago) link
Silver Apples and Holly Herndon are doing this $3 red bull dealie tonight! SILVER APPLES See you there, Chicago.
Also I have had a fine time at Burlington since I had the above experience. I think it just depends on the show/crowd.
