I stamp my own faux-vintage copper coins and use them as currency I wonder if they would accept those in lieu of USD?

whoa what's up with this?
― goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 15:53 (ten years ago) link
yeah i was actually at the turf last night and heard that.
not totally surprised, first avenue has been promoting shows at other venues like the turf, fine line, and cabooze pretty intensively for awhile now.
i think they've coveted a venue in between the entry and the main room. entry is zoned for about 200 i think but they've packed more in but it's miserable. but there's definitley shows where they could maybe sell like 350 tickets but that would be a miserable main room show, too packed for the entry, and good for the turf or fine line.
frankly, i've been getting worried about the turf...sc@l0n is a fucking crazy person and recently came in a threw a fit and canceled a bunch of booked shows and closed the club sunday - tues. my fear was that when light rail started next year some condo developer was gonna come through and offer him a few million to knock it down.
first ave will fix is up w/kitchen and new bathrooms, etc
all this said....it's bittersweet for me. for nearly 20 years it's been as close to a home bar as i've ever had, through the current regime and before that rob and leah rule....it's been a pretty free space to do whatever the fuck you wanted, stay until 3 am after a show if you knew the folks, hang out, do weird DJ nights, whatever....
was definitely an era that was gonna come to an end eventually.
the memory i will take is of my first band playing "shots" by neil young & crazy horse at about 45 minutes past bar time with my friend pretending to fellate me and shooting a fake kid's laser gun in the microphone

Good times, good times
― chr1sb3singer, Friday, 11 October 2013 16:04 (ten years ago) link
cool post tho, thx :)
it's one of the great bars-qua-bars we have. now that i think of it, i've only gone there to hang out and drink like once (ie non-show), that's a little weird.
― goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 16:06 (ten years ago) link
I've never made it in the door. Both times I tried to see a show it was sold out :(

― lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link
I am not pleased with this news. If they 86 ry@n after all his years of hard work there (and elsewhere) I will never set foot in that fucking place again.

ry@n is now booking at another comparable venue on the other side of the river that you may be familiar with :) (not the cabooze but you are in the neighborhood if you know what i mean)

Schooner actually DOES have live music. I play there fairly often!
― Low down bad refrigerator (Dan Peterson), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:14 (ten years ago) link
jesus really? i've been told to never ever go in there (and not by like suburban scaredy cats either)
― goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link
i mean, it's the bar where cece mcdonald's knife fight happened, too...
― goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:16 (ten years ago) link
i was there once cuz a friend was DJing there and it wasn't as scary as advertised IMO.
― lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:16 (ten years ago) link
huh all right
― goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, the CeCe McDonald thing was totally messed up, but also an aberration. I've never seen violence there. But I've seen a lot of REALLY drunk people...

Pretty sure I'm going. If you do, find me and I'll buy you a beer. I'm the tall guy playing bass in the Schooner video above.
― Glenn Miller-core (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 19 December 2013 21:43 (ten years ago) link
I'ma be there...*warning name drop story coming up*: Mike Watt & the Missingmen stayed at my place a few yrs ago and it turned into a long night in the kitchen talking about underrated old school Mpls bands and Watt (who was in the bathroom off my kitchen) comes bursting out the door yelling "MAN SIZED ACTION!!" You kind of had to be there but I think you can also probably picture it.
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 19 December 2013 21:47 (ten years ago) link
HAHA, yes I can!
― Glenn Miller-core (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 19 December 2013 21:50 (ten years ago) link
I think I missed the last Man Sized show but I saw the Entry gig ten (or more) yrs back during the holidays when Brian Paulson played with them, I seem to recall he had arrived striaght from the airport to get onstage with them (or maybe that's just how I want to remember it) and it was a great show on a perfect, snowy Mpls night.
I cracked a Man Sized Action joke in front a packed First Ave crowd at Replacements "tribute" thing, didn't get very many laughs.
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 19 December 2013 21:58 (ten years ago) link
yeah i went to that show in the entry
i hope rifle sport gets together for one more show
― My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:01 (ten years ago) link
I was at that entry show too. 2000, doesn't seem that long ago.

i'm woefully unfamiliar with most of this music (despite billy batson being a dude i ended up spending a whole bunch of time with one summer, before i had even moved to the TCs permanently) (weirdly enough) but i think i might hit this?
― napgenius (goole), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link
The Mighty Mofos are the best live band in Mpls, now and forever, Man Sized are great, the Eagles Club is a fun place to see a show, this will be awesome
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link
Also, it was 2000? Christ...
Unless they did another one since then.
― Glenn Miller-core (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link
you're right about the eagles, i saw the final skoal kodiak show there and it was a pretty wild vibe.
― napgenius (goole), Thursday, 19 December 2013 23:23 (ten years ago) link

― napgenius (goole), Friday, 3 January 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link
Hah, didn't drop over to the other side. Silverteens set was HUGE fun! I wish their cover of The Bongos' "Glow In The Dark" was on youtube.
