they played the shit out of Lysol's first track live for a time after Lysol's release, without Preston.

The band changed every 1-3 albums since the 80s.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yah that was so awz (and repeatedly got booed off the stage opening for primus doing it) xp

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

There's also the Joe Preston album (from the Melvins solo albums). At least you can be sure Joe wrote the songs on that one.

Which, as I've said, was the shittiest album ever with the word Melvins on it.

Here's Buzz (interviewed by me) on the Joe Preston record:

Joe did his as a homework assignment. He wasn’t into it at all. We couldn’t believe that he wasn’t interested in this. That was the beginning of the end for him. It’s terrible. His heart wasn’t in it and he was a dumbass for doing that. He did it in about an afternoon.

s'true his solo album wasnt the best

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish Dale Crover was longer. It's about 12 minutes long, but a good 12 minutes. I guess there's Altamont.

Who doesn't think King Buzzo was the best of the three? "Isabella" and "Skeeter" are among my favorite Melvs tracks of all time.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Dale's is the best. Buzzo's close second.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

the drumming on isabella ...

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

LOL

Stag (Atlantic, 1996) *****
Buzz: I knew after this record we were finished with Atlantic. That’s when they told us we need to party more with people from radio sales. If I’m gonna do blow with the guy from Sugar Ray, I better be able to fist him up the ass too.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish Buzz could feed me one-lines for all my articles.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

He seems like a prick. I've seen other articles where he comes off like a dick too.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzzo in person >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Buzzo in print

He's a pretty non-B.S., funny friendly guy. Flattened to print, all of that is missed.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Best impression of Buzzo was on, of all places, Fox. He was on some news of the day panel there. Search for "buzzo fox" on YouTube.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

"Flattened to print, all of that is missed."

Yes. He comes across as very mean spirited, especially in regard to the multitudes of bassists the band has had.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Also

Tones On Tail >>> Bauhaus >> Love & Rockets >> David J. >>>> Peter Murphy >>>>>>> Daniel Ash

Keep in mind I love love love Bauhaus, so this is sayin a lot.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

shit, wrong thread. haha

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzz has been real nice the times ive met him. If Preston is responsible for boring Sunno and Earth bullshit metal than he should be destroyed.

chaki, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know, but it seems unfait to credit JP with Lysol's drone/noise tendencies. Lysol came out after the Eggnog EP, on which Lori played bass. And Eggnog's got Charmicarmicat, which out hippos Lysol by a long shot.

The drone thing seems like something the Melvins messed with for a while, then dropped, and Joe just happened to happen along sometime in the middle of that phase.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzz and Dale play bass on alot of the recordings, so maybe they should have been included in the poll.
I voted for Mark - mostly cuz Stag is so great.

Mike Dixn, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Joe should only be held responsible for Thrones. That's his band.

Having said that, I think Lysol is the best Melvins record.

The one time I saw Melvins with Joe, Buzz and Dale left the stage after 20 minutes and Joe kept playing solo for another 5 minutes. He's a trooper.

It makes me very happy to see Jared in this band. He deserves it more than anyone.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i deserve it more.

chaki, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago) link

summing up: whiney has a hate-on for joe preston. nobody likes the joe preston solo ep but me.

captain save-a-joe

eight years pass...

I love Dunn's upright bass work on Freak Puke. What a cool album! Is he on any other latter-day Melvins (Lite) albums I might have missed?

Wimmels, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:28 (eight years ago) link

dunn-o ¯\(°_o)/¯

i guess i'm not too surprised that buzz was a dick abt joe preston, but i'm shocked (shocked!) that so few stepped up to defend it itt. only one of the three solo recs with something to say, and easily the most forward-thinking, thanks mostly to "hands first flower". "bricklebrit" is pretty cool, too, rewards VOLYUME.

king buzzo = a couple nice melvins demos padded out w/ a throwaway noise piece and an awesome (awesome!) dave grohl goof. dale crover, while surprisingly song-driven & much more consistently "melvins-y" than the other two, winds up pretty forgettable, imo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iBi4UbWpR0

i mean, they all sound like half-assed homework assignments, but side 2 of joe's ep has held up real damn well over the years.

six months pass...

Love to re-read this thread

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

Since this poll, they've added Jeff Pinkus, Steve McDonald and Dale himself to the exploding bass player slot

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

I don't think I'd have voted for Trevor Dunn but I really like him with the Melvins

Wimmels, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:10 (seven years ago) link

Trevor Dunn probably is the best bassist as bassist.

I'm thinking best period of Melvins might be a bit more under debate as the power quartet with Big Business and those records I think are as good as anything they have done.
