basically pre-remixing songs for maximum radio exposure across the country, seems kinda canny really

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 11 August 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

what do they play in flyover country? is there a Nelly version?

some dude, Monday, 11 August 2014 19:30 (nine years ago) link

that would be fun. nelly and tech n9ne.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 11 August 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

i am in st louis and they def would be playing a nelly version if it existed, lol (i still hear "ride wit me" on top 40/rhythmic radio more than some actually current hits). alas they are making do w/ the too short version (one station also mixes in k michelle's remix).

billboard's article about 10 summers mentions some of his upcoming productions (not sure what was known already and what wasn't):

Still to come is a track he produced on Jeremih's next album that suggests something that could have been on Bjork's 2001 album, Vespertine. Another recent song that he cut for Rihanna's upcoming album, rumored for a fourth-quarter release, is "like nothing you've ever heard," teases Mustard.

Also in the pipeline are cuts for Usher, Kanye West and Lil Wayne's respective albums, as the producer remains focused on the next big beat.

dyl, Monday, 11 August 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

most of the tracks on Jeremih's LAST album suggest something that could have been on Vespertine

I do seem to hear the French version more on the radio lately, norcal not representing properly

nova, Monday, 11 August 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

album sucks

self-hating Bay Area person

nova, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 04:51 (nine years ago) link

well I guess he's LA but I think of his sound as post-hyphy

nova, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 04:52 (nine years ago) link

it's definitely post-hyphy, that's why i love it. i also keep expecting e-40 to pop up

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 07:00 (nine years ago) link

Ha of all the ilx rap posters I wouldn't trust on this matter xp

The Reverend, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 08:51 (nine years ago) link

the winner in this poll is kinda obvious IMO. i'm more interested in seeing what gets 2nd/3rd place.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 10:39 (nine years ago) link

I love to get Tuom

some dude, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 10:42 (nine years ago) link

I don't quite get why people think this list or rappers/singers on 10 Summers is underwhelming tbh. Seems pretty logical and also solid to me. Apart from Nicki and Kendrick, who's missing?

longneck, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 12:14 (nine years ago) link

yeah it seems about right to me

also it's much more profitable for dj mustard to make sure people like nicki and kendrick and whoever are using his beats for their own records and not his

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 12:25 (nine years ago) link

The Tinashe interlude from this album sounds really good

"clever cut, mustard"

mom, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

one more summer

nova, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 09:14 (nine years ago) link

yeah is it meant to like depict a reflection (aha) on recursive nostalgia for summers past, his self in the present reality in b&w

last year at mustardbad hoe

r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 09:22 (nine years ago) link

who's gonna take his place is my main thought right now

I think Metro Boomin is dope but idk how radio-ready his sound is

nova, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 09:31 (nine years ago) link

detail maybe. but it seems like his momentum has already slowed.

or london on da track.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 11:45 (nine years ago) link

when Mike WiLL was running things Mustard was already the clear successor. the fact that there isn't right now probably means there's not gonna be one producer that dominant this time next year, which is the case most years anyway.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 12:11 (nine years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 14 August 2014 00:01 (nine years ago) link

good results

dyl, Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:24 (nine years ago) link

Kinda surprised I like recent Detail beats cuz I thought his earlier ones were trash

nova, Thursday, 14 August 2014 04:42 (nine years ago) link

highly agreeable results, goons really came together

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:00 (nine years ago) link

gotta wonder if "2 on" is in pole position to win ilx 2014 singles poll

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:00 (nine years ago) link

had no idea it was rated highly; i am not a fan

go ahead. make vid where u rap about this new TMNT movie. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 August 2014 06:13 (nine years ago) link

I'd like to get an edit without Schoolboy Q.

gotta wonder if "2 on" is in pole position to win ilx 2014 singles poll

nothing else springing to mind as an obvious contender, esp in a year when the biggest hit of the summer is "fancy"

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2014 08:24 (nine years ago) link

get ratchet go dumb then go more dumb then we can keep it lit let's roll

^^tinashe's delivery of these lines as if they were one line is prob her finest vocal moment on the song

sean paul interpolation still takes it to another level

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2014 08:26 (nine years ago) link

^^^^ prob your finest critical assessment in this thread

Tim F, Thursday, 14 August 2014 08:40 (nine years ago) link

imo the little string parts in the second verse are what take it next level

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 14:44 (nine years ago) link

in other news our boy's got himself a big ol hit https://twitter.com/chartnews/status/499749148607127552

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 14:45 (nine years ago) link

yeah i'm surprised by the extent to which "don't tell 'em" is already crossing over to pop considering pop radio hasn't enthusiastically picked up any other mustardwave other than "fancy." i guess jeremih's previous track record in crossing over helps.

"2 on" is great but uhhh let's hope the year ends up being somewhat better than one in which we can legitimately expect it to top our poll lol

dyl, Thursday, 14 August 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link

"show me" got pop radio play

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

not a huge amount but there was some crossover there

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

For the last couple of months my rap station has played "2 On" followed by brief voiceover from Tinashe introducing herself, saying that this her new song, and that it's sponsored by RCA records. Does that happen on any other stations? I can't figure out the business arrangement behind the plug, especially since the song is a hit, so it's not like it needs to be a sponsored in order to get airplay

Evan R, Thursday, 14 August 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Worthing pointing out how '2 On' ticks a lot of ILXOR boxes for TOY tho.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

cassie fan club only has relatively limited influence thankfully

r|t|c, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

Notable contingent, a classic.

yeah i've heard rita ora "i will never let you down" on radio that way also the mila j song

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

yeah i've heard that here and there -- 50 Cent bought a lot of ad time to play his single with Trey Songz lol -- but yeah that is weird when it's a song that would likely be in rotation anyway.

it's iheartradio's (clear channel's) on the verge program -- basically some execs choose a song/artist to be featured, and then all clear channel stations of the corresponding format have to play it at least 150 times, paid for by the record label. there's an article talking about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/07/15/clear-channels-on-the-verge-program-helped-make-iggy-azalea-a-star-heres-how-it-works/

dyl, Friday, 15 August 2014 05:34 (nine years ago) link

Don't care for these results but then I only like "2on" in spite of itself

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 August 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

Oh wow, thanks dyl. I had no idea that existed

Evan R, Friday, 15 August 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

I already got a strong return of g-funk vibe from mustard but wow his album really makes it explicit.
