Steve Miller Band: Children of The Future, OG Sleeve:

'70s Reissue:

They did similar thing with Sailor, except going further as to re-title the album "Living In The USA" (after it's hit). I actually have both of those reissues in my vinyl stacks.

They did the same with the other The The reissues as well. Ugh.

They did the same with the other The The reissues as well. Ugh

To be fair, the photos were on a cardboard sleeve, with the original artwork still on the front of the booklet of the CD. Unless that was just for the first run.

Those Hendrix reissues were panned at the time. I think they messed with the track sequence too

Oh man, I hate when record companies do this. This is what Wish You Were Here's cover is supposed to look like:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/WishYouWereHere-300.jpg

It is NOT supposed to look like this:

And by the way, Greg Kihn is so disappointed with the lost album title opportunity.

They photoshopped the black guy out of the band?! Seriously?

Never knew about that original Wipers cover! When did the switch occur? Also I'm happy the moon & antarctica has been reverted to its original cover, that's an all time favorite. very affecting for some reason

the original 1986 version of Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death by Felt looked like this. the picture was cropped for the 2003 CD reissue, apparently because Lawrence disliked the headband he is wearing in the photo

he had issues with the title as well, in the discography section of that Felt coffee table book that was released the other year the album is referred to as 'The 17th Century'

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 09:41 (nine years ago) link

almost of of the Felt CD reissues had their cover altered in some way, I think this is good thing though, if it's done well- a design that works well at 12" record sleeve size is not necessarily going to work at CD sleeve size- it always bugged me that on the CD version of Get Happy they didn't size up the coffee mug stain to the correct dimensions

This is the best thread for a long time.

xpost to be fair (re: the Can Anthology), it maybe gave too much prominence to Malcolm Mooney (who was the first and final singer, the original issue being when Can were just about still going), over Damo Suzuki (more albums), and more that the four guys were the mainstays.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 09:47 (nine years ago) link

that second version is truly godawful.

what about albums being reissued with the same sleeve but a different title? Microdisney's 1984 album 'We Hate You South African Bastards!' and it's post-apartheid CD reissue 'Love Your Enemies'

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 09:59 (nine years ago) link

christ yeah those Hendrix ones are the pits. i don't even like Hendrix but jeez.

Beatles Rock N Roll music was hardly a classic sleeve to begin with but the re-issue (on the MFP label!) is just the worst shit ever

not heard of name changes before !

just remembered re cover changes.

a large chunk of the on-u sound catalogue was reissued by EFA back in the late 90s.

the reissues overimposed the original image with a strange coloured M thing.

example :

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-front.jpg

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-mr-front.jpg

each release had a different colour variation.

not totally offensive, but i would have preferred the original image.

I first started listening Devo via these 90s '2 albums on one CD' reissues so I have nostalgic affection for them even though they are objectively crappy looking

albums re-issued with a different title? how's about Electribe 101's Electribal Memories. the *same* album and artwork as the debut, repackaged as a Best Of in 2002 only now 'featuring Billy Ray Martin'.

http://s.pixogs.com/image/R-3432881-1330194392.jpeg

not that i blame them squeezing a few more pence out of such a great record.

piscesx, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:09 (nine years ago) link

oooh fuck yeah.
i have those devo reissues.
hate hate the cheapo packaging.

I think they reissued Days In Europa on CD with the original 'Berlin Olympics' sleeve at some point?

I really like the second, non-nazi version, not trying to imply that it is godawful

I think I read that the new cover for the reissue of The Third Reich 'n' Roll was because the original couldn't be sold in Germany due to laws outlawing the sale of items with the swastika on them?

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:35 (nine years ago) link

my MFP cassette version of relics was different to all of these !

was similar to the b-n-w version, but seem to recall it had some pink on it (possibly the bands name in pink - doh !)

mark e, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:38 (nine years ago) link

yeah, that's what my mfp vinyl copy looks like too

it must be said that mfp put out some cracking records amongst all the dross

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:42 (nine years ago) link

I think that was a thing were some versions had a more elaborate design where the little slats were actually hole cut into the outer sleeve, showing the different coloured inner sleeve below, and some were more basic, cheaper versions?

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:47 (nine years ago) link

I much prefer the Wish You Were Here four-color robot hands cover to the hollywood backlot dork in a suit on fire cover.

Sorry about sizes there, anyway Jive Records did a whole series of these identikit reissues in - when else - the 1980s.

The Ash Ra Tempel cover posted upthread IS the original cover, this was covered in another thread there are actually three covers for 'New Age of Earth', and the most famous one (the Virgin release) was the last be issued.

WAs that Christine Perfect reissue with the fake xerox sleeve an attempt to make her seem contemporary in post-punk late 70s or something?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 12:03 (nine years ago) link

the orange one is the german version, the b&w ziggy one is the reissue
