xpost to be fair (re: the Can Anthology), it maybe gave too much prominence to Malcolm Mooney (who was the first and final singer, the original issue being when Can were just about still going), over Damo Suzuki (more albums), and more that the four guys were the mainstays.

that second version is truly godawful.

what about albums being reissued with the same sleeve but a different title? Microdisney's 1984 album 'We Hate You South African Bastards!' and it's post-apartheid CD reissue 'Love Your Enemies'

christ yeah those Hendrix ones are the pits. i don't even like Hendrix but jeez.

Beatles Rock N Roll music was hardly a classic sleeve to begin with but the re-issue (on the MFP label!) is just the worst shit ever

not heard of name changes before !

just remembered re cover changes.

a large chunk of the on-u sound catalogue was reissued by EFA back in the late 90s.

the reissues overimposed the original image with a strange coloured M thing.

example :

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-front.jpg

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-mr-front.jpg

each release had a different colour variation.

not totally offensive, but i would have preferred the original image.

I first started listening Devo via these 90s '2 albums on one CD' reissues so I have nostalgic affection for them even though they are objectively crappy looking

albums re-issued with a different title? how's about Electribe 101's Electribal Memories. the *same* album and artwork as the debut, repackaged as a Best Of in 2002 only now 'featuring Billy Ray Martin'.

not that i blame them squeezing a few more pence out of such a great record.

piscesx, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:09 (nine years ago) link

oooh fuck yeah.
i have those devo reissues.
hate hate the cheapo packaging.

I think they reissued Days In Europa on CD with the original 'Berlin Olympics' sleeve at some point?

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:28 (nine years ago) link

I really like the second, non-nazi version, not trying to imply that it is godawful

I think I read that the new cover for the reissue of The Third Reich 'n' Roll was because the original couldn't be sold in Germany due to laws outlawing the sale of items with the swastika on them?

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:35 (nine years ago) link

my MFP cassette version of relics was different to all of these !

was similar to the b-n-w version, but seem to recall it had some pink on it (possibly the bands name in pink - doh !)

mark e, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:38 (nine years ago) link

yeah, that's what my mfp vinyl copy looks like too

it must be said that mfp put out some cracking records amongst all the dross

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:42 (nine years ago) link

I think that was a thing were some versions had a more elaborate design where the little slats were actually hole cut into the outer sleeve, showing the different coloured inner sleeve below, and some were more basic, cheaper versions?

soref, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 10:47 (nine years ago) link

I much prefer the Wish You Were Here four-color robot hands cover to the hollywood backlot dork in a suit on fire cover.

Sorry about sizes there, anyway Jive Records did a whole series of these identikit reissues in - when else - the 1980s.

The Ash Ra Tempel cover posted upthread IS the original cover, this was covered in another thread there are actually three covers for 'New Age of Earth', and the most famous one (the Virgin release) was the last be issued.

WAs that Christine Perfect reissue with the fake xerox sleeve an attempt to make her seem contemporary in post-punk late 70s or something?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 12:03 (nine years ago) link

the orange one is the german version, the b&w ziggy one is the reissue

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 13:55 (nine years ago) link

I have always preferred the black and white Ziggy one anyway. Did not know about the cartoon cover! Would be cool if the rest of the world had cartoon covers for all of the albums. Would like to see Low.

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 14:00 (nine years ago) link

Yeah the Christine Perfect encapsulates the major label approach to repackaging something- Christine in the Hippy/Huey Newton Poster chair is passe, but if we posterize the photo with blobs of color, we can make it look like a Wharhol commission... very now! And while we're at it, lets rub some Letraset on the thing, but I'm running short on "C" so I'll take some from another sheet. Ready for 1982, to be put on display near to the Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks solo records.

The Hendrix ones are really weird, because it's not like his reputation has slipped, and the Axis and Ladyland covers were iconic.

Those Hendrix reissues were panned at the time. I think they messed with the track sequence too

They didn't mess with the sequence on Axis or Ladyland, but I think AYE might've been futzed with to reflect the UK running order. It also had a slew of bonus tracks.

almost of of the Felt CD reissues had their cover altered in some way

when all their albums were first properly reissued on cd in the 90s lawrence decided they should all have "generic" covers:

What was the actual story re: the puppets on "Band of Gypsies"?

A lot of "oh, John Peel / friends of Brian objected" but nobody seems to know.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 15:11 (nine years ago) link

the original 1986 version of Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death by Felt looked like this. the picture was cropped for the 2003 CD reissue

the image had been cropped much earlier than than on every reissue of the album. only the first vinyl pressing had the original cover. it seems lawrence regretted the photo almost instantly.

What was the actual story re: the puppets on "Band of Gypsies"?

The reminds me of a real fucking head-scratcher:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QHpzAqam3RQ/UZVcXiDv-DI/AAAAAAAAAOU/t8caBg_w_zc/s1600/albert-ayler-in-greenwich-vill-459355.jpghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Y42KD5AFL.jpg

Somehow, the latter issue (1998) looks more embarrassingly dated than the original (1968) issue.

It's so easy to spot late 90s design style.

i was pretty excited when rvng announced they would reissue Harald Grosskopf's Synthesist.
For some reason they took one of the best covers ever and made it boring.

Yes, he's called David Bowie, but what is he?

Oh, he's a man of words, and a man of music...

I always liked the Augustus Pablo cover, the way he's so intently playing the melodica and that woman is like "what is that beguiling instrument?"

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

oh god dude i had to turn the cover inside out i hated it so much. there is this photo of a SUPER stoned pablo sitting at the keyboards or mixing desk or something that is now the cover of that album for me. i'm trying to find it on the web but i can't, maybe i'll scan it
