don't think this will be that hard for me actually, although not citing versions is gonna get a little weird given these guys' penchant for recycling stuff

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:39 (nine years ago) link

I think I can just do my ballot cold with no re-listening, that's how much I jammed this stuff back in the day

Is Highs, Lows And Heavenly Blows available anywhere? I have never heard it, that is one of the most unavailable records I have ever tried to find.

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:55 (nine years ago) link

I have it so I must have dl'd it for free from somewhere way back when. it's okay.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:58 (nine years ago) link

voted!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:13 (nine years ago) link

I would've stuck some side-projects on a longer ballot but 20 is all killer/no filler ie Spiritualized/S3 and a Spectrum track

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:14 (nine years ago) link

fyi in case y'all haven't heard this (from the album v confusingly titled "Spectrum" by the artist Sonic Boom)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTPa2Obfqzs

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:18 (nine years ago) link

yeah I am probably gonna vote for "Angel" from that excellent excellent album

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:19 (nine years ago) link

yeah that's a good'un - I remember getting the vinyl of that at the college radio station with the spinning plastic disc on the front sleeve and thinking that was the coolest design.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link

album is some kind of apex of minimalist pop

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

rly, 5 albums tho...

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

hmm I did find this thing that looks like a compilation:

http://open.spotify.com/artist/2mIPQPRIXBXBxyHA5gmtEX

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

I have that too - that is better, actually

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

includes a bunch of singles that were issued on 45 in the wake of the Spacemen 3 breakup that I eagerly snapped up at the time - Indian Summer, True Love Will Find You In the End etc.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:47 (nine years ago) link

yah I have the double single and the 10" and the Drone Dream single, looks like all of those are on there.

another recommendation - "Delta 6" from the EAR 10"

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

I bought this in 1995 and it was pretty disappointing, to be honest. Can remember almost nothing about it now, but I think there was a track where he sang said "and then....and then I just drifted away." In fact, that is literally the only thing I can remember about it.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:57 (nine years ago) link

"Undo The Taboo" from HLAHB is definitely Top 20 for me. Shocked at how much I like Forever Alien these days.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 22:47 (nine years ago) link

man I haven't heard that either!

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 22:57 (nine years ago) link

Admin question: count Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized versions of "Feel So Sad" as separate versions? (my gut instinct for this and similar is NO)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:08 (nine years ago) link

agreed, count them as the same

is that awesome 13-minute S3 version lost forever on some OOP CD single?

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:11 (nine years ago) link

see also Lord Can You Hear Me? although I doubt anyone would realistically vote for the Spz version

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

13-minute S3 version lost forever on some OOP CD single?

isn't this the first Spiritualized 12"?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

hmm maybe you're right

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:15 (nine years ago) link

fuck this is gonna be really hard, like as hard as The Fall

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

dunno, but there's a 13-minute spiritualized version on on of their first singles

contenderizer, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:19 (nine years ago) link

^ 2nd single, "anyway that you want me" was 1st

contenderizer, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link

no way, the one with "Run" was 1st iirc

(off to Discogs, or Elvis to thread)

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:26 (nine years ago) link

OK I am wrong, contenderizer got it

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:27 (nine years ago) link

oh man just looking at those singles, Sway is so goddamn good, how the hell am I gonna do this

love love love 200 Bars as well

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:28 (nine years ago) link

How many singles did they have before Lazer Guided Melodies? 'Why Don't You Smile Now' was the first thing of theirs I heard, a mate taped it for me in 1991.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:29 (nine years ago) link

off the top of my head
Any Way That You Want Me (7")
then Feel So Sad (12")
then Run and Sway 12" (one of which has Why Don't You Smile Now on the b-side)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:32 (nine years ago) link

I think he put Sway on the same tape, so that would make sense.

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:33 (nine years ago) link

ok Smile was actually the a-side whatever

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:35 (nine years ago) link

love love love 200 Bars as well

will be v high on my ballot

contenderizer, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:35 (nine years ago) link

I love the version of "Feel So Sad" on the Medication single esp. when it all crashes into that huge throaty organ drone.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:37 (nine years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV9-yjU_5m8

best Drkside song imo.
Spacemen meets Dream Syndicatte sort of.

Always liked Darkside's last single "Retroglide" (def. has a Dream Syndicate sound here) http://youtu.be/-Pi407wYyRM

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:51 (nine years ago) link

hmm the one I kept off that album was Mystic Morning

you know what is actually impossible to find online/on youtubez etc is Slipstream singles

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:52 (nine years ago) link

My memory might be playing tricks on me, but isn't there a track on Pure Phase (long, repetitive, no lyrics) which is made up of a combination of two tracks from an EP a couple of years before (Electric Mainline?) played simutaneously?

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:53 (nine years ago) link

itt stoners try to remember minute discographical details from the late 80s/early 90s

sleeve, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 23:59 (nine years ago) link

all of the tracks on the Electric Mainline EP that preceded Pure Phase show up on the album in slightly altered form. As far as the "played simultaneously" thing goes, I think yr remembering the (possibly apocryphal?) anecdote that Pure Phase had two entirely separate mixes - one for the left channel and one for the right - mixed together for the final album.

Jason talked about this often at the time of PP's release, but I never got around to picking out the differences.

plz also consider "Touch The Stars"

yr not thinking of the "Pure Phase Tones for DJs" EP are you? still have my copy of that around somewhere

anthony braxton diamond geezer (anagram), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 08:22 (nine years ago) link

Hm yeah I need to vote for that in some form but it prob makes sense voting for it as a track and then devoting my album picks to things more fully fleshed out as albums

I remember being very disappointed with the first Alpha Stone record when it came out and filed it away after a couple of plays. Worth digging out?

pure phase tones for DJs came out after Pure Phase

Skip it. The Alpha Stone records get better as you go forward but the first is the weakest.

I'm aware of that, I was suggesting that it might have been the long track NB&S was thinking of.

Culling the 20 tracks was particularly tricky as I've had to leave out plenty of favourites

Just saw this, can cook up a ballot so I'll do this tom morning.

i think im going to sit here and make myself do this.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:10 (nine years ago) link

mine is gong to be all Spiritualized, i fucking love Spacemen 3 but i have to listen and i can't do both bands tonight.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:11 (nine years ago) link

My response to the "all Spiritualized" posts better belongs in the irrationally angry thread, but I am doing my best to remain calm. And narrowing in on an all "O.D. Catastrophe" ballot.

describing a scene in which the Hulk gets a boner (contenderizer), Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:17 (nine years ago) link

I submitted a ballot that's heavy on anything made between 1987-1992.

klonman, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:26 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i'm already rethinking my strategy, but i will miss so much Spacemen 3 without a recap. all ILM polls that i vote in, i go though that artist catalog, even if it is just skimming through some albums (Depeche Mode).

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 February 2015 03:53 (nine years ago) link

that $45 bud looks just about perfect.

You have to re-think your strategy.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 February 2015 11:19 (nine years ago) link

Is this some sort of joke?

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 21 February 2015 11:20 (nine years ago) link

As I saw this late the only strategy was = re-listen to Perfect Prescription and put my fave tracks with those from Playing with Fire.

These days I am like LOL Spiritualized.

btw I am voting for this alternative version of How does it feel? but I suppose count it along withe the version officially released.
