Tropical House (steel drum synths, sax, "syncopated" beats and old school acapellas?)

the matoma mix is just a bunch of his own remixes lined up right? that's obv not the idea way to experience this stuff ... I'm more seeing these as DJ tools where individual songs work & some don't but they're not afraid of incorporating rap which has been an issue w/ balearic zone of fruitless disintegration since the mid 00s revival

what is fruitless disintegration

the late great, Monday, 14 September 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

if only coyote records had rapping on them

an attempt to joke on 'fruitless intensification' but more implying castles made of sand falling in the sea eventually due to diminishing audience interest the further you go into the nu balearic essence

total wet blanket house

Not to be confused with Toadal Wet Sprocket House.

MarkoP, Monday, 14 September 2015 19:56 (eight years ago) link

as jordan noted on uk dance thread this song has a great & shameless tropical vibe

GAH STOP WITH THAT SONG IT IS THE WORST

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 13:51 (eight years ago) link

haha it's certainly the popularest, #1 in uk last week?

even though it's a bit fast&hard/housey compared to other t house tracks, it has a lot of core elements imo - throwback acapella, naive aesthetics, steel drum synth breakdown, joyous melancholy

niels, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 08:36 (eight years ago) link

it is distilled shit

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 September 2015 09:06 (eight years ago) link

the logical shit endpoint of the already shit "wish you were mine" by philip george

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 September 2015 09:07 (eight years ago) link

Don't see that at all - "wish you were min" has a kind of minor key piano riff that's much more late 90s techno (I think?), no tropical vibe

they both xploit 70s acapella's though (but the MJ one is so much better than the weirdly pitched Stevie one)

niels, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 11:25 (eight years ago) link

that's what i mean by "logical" - the sigala track is angled specifically to capitalize on summer 2015. i just don't see any creativity, originality, bangin-ness or guilty pleasureness here at all.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 September 2015 12:21 (eight years ago) link

well, I guess it is kind of vapid - and not sure I'm a fan

but I thought it worth posting since it's a smash belonging in this thread, in that respect completely agree it's "logical"

niels, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 12:37 (eight years ago) link

ha ok fair enuff :)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 September 2015 12:52 (eight years ago) link

hehe... also I guess it kind of follows the workings of tropical house industry - from what I gather this started out as an amateur Soundcloud post

niels, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 13:00 (eight years ago) link

i agree with j0rdan on this one

I don't.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link

Haha, that review was great

niels, Friday, 2 October 2015 18:44 (eight years ago) link

Mind you, normally I'm on board with arguments that things with taste are bad and tasteless things are good.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 18:50 (eight years ago) link

Nice one J0rdan.

I had forgotten about that Ed Sheeran track.

Tim F, Friday, 2 October 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link

tasteful/-less really isn't an indicator of value either way

The Reverend, Friday, 2 October 2015 20:13 (eight years ago) link

Love that review, J0rdan.

longneck, Friday, 2 October 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

I remember this argument about tasteful dance music when Everything But the Girl started experimenting with drums 'n' bass and house.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 20:54 (eight years ago) link

My biggest problem with Caracal is that it sounds all too reminiscent of "Latch," not that it's too tasteful.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

ty guys

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 October 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

I think Disclosure's tastefulness was a big part of what drew me to them originally, but then its unabashed upward mobility felt like a reaction to an insistence on rawness/undergroundness/complexity. Now it's just pushing an open door.

Tim F, Saturday, 3 October 2015 03:56 (eight years ago) link

did we have a thread about razrs? i def remember reading all the other ones

r|t|c, Saturday, 3 October 2015 07:02 (eight years ago) link

niels, Monday, 5 October 2015 10:55 (eight years ago) link

enjoying the "call on me" vibe on this one https://soundcloud.com/sigalamusic/sweetlovin

niels, Monday, 5 October 2015 10:58 (eight years ago) link

most of the auth tropical by kygo et al feels so cold and clinical, but i love when it gets warm & is fronted by pop stars lol

Haha I love this post, best music writing 2015

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 2 January 2016 08:17 (eight years ago) link

So many lines I want to c&p into every thread.

Tim F, Saturday, 2 January 2016 11:48 (eight years ago) link

Some writers may think that tropical house is a bubble that will burst, and even some artists like Thomas Jack are coming in hot saying that they want to distance themselves from the sound. To them I say, it’s just getting started and evolving outside its stereotypes so sit back, grab a cold brew and quit trying to bring down music that has the inherent ability to make you smile and want to run into the ocean butt naked.

I contend The Magician's Magic Tapes has been the curatorial center this subgenre for 5 years now. Among 200k listeners, he surely had a few producers.

My favorite 2015 thisthready thing was Cyclist - Heartbeat Speed (ft. Jocelyn Alice).

For 2016, I await the Darius album like the Second Coming (of Aeroplane).

i'm not sure that's true, about the magician, but then the trop house pulse is like lab designed for me not to find

did anyone take anything from bhouston bro's list

r|t|c, Thursday, 7 January 2016 11:32 (eight years ago) link

i liked mazde - pitch black a lot, it scratches a similar itch that goodbye by feder feat. lyse does, but it's not really trop house

so much of this stuff just sounds like slowed down euphoric trance - trance-bahton? - even down to the insistent chugging one-note basslines

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:29 (eight years ago) link

yeah try pitching terje's remix of balearic incarnation up, it's totally progressive trance

0 / 0 (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2016 16:37 (eight years ago) link

cue Tim F for the obligatory reminder that 'the differences are more interesting than the similarities' which is probably true in this case too i guess? as far as the uses to which this music is put, if nothing else

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:43 (eight years ago) link

but i am pretty far removed from the 'run into the beach butt naked' massive, so i don't know - and that does pain me

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:45 (eight years ago) link

Love this genre. That John Mayer thing up top was ridiculous!

These guys do a good job of culling through a lot of this stuff (along with bits from other genres) each week: http://noonpacific.com
