Aw, Landscape. I really like "Norman Bates." Back cover really looks like a 90s hack job.

(there is a hole cut out of the outer sleeve exposing that photo which is printed on the inner sleeve, so you've got that going on as well as the shirts/sleeve wordplay)
(The Shirts were such a great band, there should be more Shirts discussion on ilm imo)

It's kind of funny to interpret this as "strung in reverse." It's not like strings have a nut end and a tuner end.

like 'black out' obviously, but is there another level to this that I'm missing? I can't help but feel there's some appalling joke that is going over my head. is he wearing a butchers apron? is that significant? this is a really good prog album btw
well "brown outs" are also a thing in themselves. but i admit i was hoping it was a reference to a member named Brown who had been kicked out of the band.
― Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:53 (eight years ago) link
I hadn't heard of 'brown outs'! wikipedia has cleared this up anyway:
Morgan had signed a two-album deal with RCA, and in 1973 embarked on the recording of their second (and ultimately final) album, originally titled "Brown Out." The name of the album was later changed when it became apparent that the band intended to include an insert of the themselves mooning the casual record buyer.[1] Thus "Brown Out" became The Sleeper Wakes.
― soref, Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:59 (eight years ago) link
wiki also notes that the singer went on to make models for the Thomas the Tank Engine TV series

"In my experience, this is because jazz artists tend not to give a rat's ass about anything other than the music itself -- song titles, cover art, etc. It's almost an entirely different motivation."

Just got an email about an album called Ladies and Gentlemen...Nigel Hall - the debut album by a dude of that name - and was immediately disappointed by the headshot cover art, because I just knew that if it was the 70s, the label art director would have found some town somewhere with a building named Nigel Hall and made this guy stand stone-faced in the street in front of it for the album cover.
